Anyone who feels that life is all about the persuit of comfort are forgetting the age-old truth that life is about stuggle and it's not supposed to be easy.
It seems to me that, when boiled down to its most basic components, the direction of your life is dependent upon whether you live it in persuit of personal gain or in persuit of a greater good - a grander goal - something that cements your mark upon the face of history such that the repercussions of your actions and the example you live by will echo through the ages and along the corridors of time.
As we stand here at the threshold to the future of our species, and peer into the darkness of things to come, it's easy to lose faith in the essential 'goodness' of things. It's easy to analyze and dissect and pick apart every little motivation of this limited body in the search for some universal 'purpose' we always expect to just pop up and start singing and dancing for us, making its presence obvious. It's easy to look at the disgusting TV Culture we've created and retreat in search of a quiet place to expel our vomit. But the general fallacy in that train of thought lies in the realization that by sitting and doing nothing, by sitting idle, listening for this pretty song of purpose, we're betraying our real purpose which, if anything, is to continue to propel this species forward into the universe, regardless of the idiots around us who can't seem to get their heads out of the sand.
Turning our faces to the stars and realizing that we're floating on this insignificant ball in an endless expanse of space, we can't help but see the immutable beacons of what's out there amid the vastness - these countless, tiny dots that signify islands of light and hope in an ocean of cold and dark. In this modern age wherein we THINK we understand what we're looking at, we can't help but wonder whether there really is a God, and whether he even gives a shit about our insignificant troubles.
It is only when we turn our gaze to the space within ourselves and realize that the entire universe we see layed out above us is reflected in our own hearts and minds can we understand that as much as we need the universe to exist, it needs us to witness it.
Life is a sacred communion with something of which none can speak but everyone knows in his most quiet of moments. Like Moses looking into the face of God, anything we write down and bring back for the second-hand viewing is only going to be the subject of laughter and ridicule, for any attempt to capture and hold that which dwells in the ether of spirit cannot succeed any more than taking a picture of someone you love can convey that love to others. Every utterance, every syllable of description is a blasphemous poison that sends the spirit fleeing.
Throughout his history, man has been humbled and enraged in the face of this universal principle like a proverbial David - hurling his stones of Art, Science, and Success in defiance and celebration. Chasing the spirits of genius through the valleys of existence with butterfly nets in hand, man has authored the course of his own history, even in his failure.
Who knows what the eventuality of our evolution will hold? Who can tell whether we will one day shuck the shackles of this earth and touch the stars? All I know is...it is against our nature not to try.
John Kennedy said, "We choose to go to the moon...not because it's easy, but because it's hard." In this way, we should all be encouraged to discover our hopes and follow our dreams, not because they're easy...but because they're hard.
Then again...what the hell do I know?

Thank you, Katie.
I guess it shouldn't surprise me so much that such a relatively innocuous post would receive such a backlash. This really wasn't even addressed specifically toward the users of uber. It was a response to an email I got from a friend that I just decided to go ahead and post for the hell of it.

I think you almost contradict yourself here. If your motivation is to "cement your mark upon the face of history" then your motivation *is* personal gain. You gain by believing that you are important, that your life has meaning and that you will be remembered. There is nothing selfless about wanting to save the world, because it's only your world that you're saving.
Personal gain and the pursuit of a greater good cannot be separated into two distinct checkboxes.

Why is it I can't say anything here without someone saying I'm trying to be clever?
The way I see it, I'm just trying to express myself. That's all.
But again, that's not going to be possible. You're only going to hear what you want to hear.
Perception is everything, which is pretty much EXACTLY what I've stated here REPEATEDLY.
Funny how every time you open your fucking mouth now, you're just proving my fucking point. But of course, you have no idea you're doing it, or you'd take the hint and shut the fuck up.
How you like them apples, Poncho?
Caul, *I* sound like me when I was 16 years old too. The difference between you and me is, apparently I don't just throw away truth when I see it. I'd rather keep it an build on it.
You people act like I'm claiming to be the fucking Messiah here when all I'm doing is pointlessly musing to myself.
-------------------------------------------
You are trying to express yourself, while trying to point out how everyone else isn't as aware or conscious or as wise to the world. Anyone who disagrees with you, or doesn't fall down worshipping your crap and applauding it you assume is an idiot. Don't say you aren't trying to sound clever.
You go from "perception is everything" to claiming there are universal absolute truths that nobody who is aware can deny. Anytime somone points out a flaw in what you say on any subject, you ignore it or claim that is what you are saying. Pick a fucking philosophy for christ sake, or at least don't make a post about every half assed one you crap out after reading fortune cookies and finally thinking you know what zen means.
If I am proving your point, why do you get bent out of shape? Why do you think I have some vendetta?
You call me mexican rainwear again I will rip your head off.
You sound like you are 16 because you haven't grown since then (or maybe you weren't there then). You haven't built upon anything, you are regurgitating bad conversations I had in high school, fuck, in middle school.
Pointlessly musing to yourself would not involve defending your ideas to people who disagree, and acting bitter or condescending toward those that do.
Honestly I envy you.
I wish I was so simple minded I could spit out some half baked basterdized phiolsophy from other people and think it clever, or original. I wish I could know less than an honors physics student in high school and be confident that I could solve the world's energy problems. Yeah, your posts aren't preachy or attempts to be clever at all...

I didn't use the word "the" before "truth", and I didn't capitalize it either.
I don't know what 'truth' you have or don't have. You never take the time to express yourself unless it's to criticize something someone else said.
How many times do I have to talk about perception before you will actually get it?

Oh and by the way...
You're wrong about 'vendetta' too:
ven·det·ta Pronunciation Key (vn-dt)
n.
1. A feud between two families or clans that arises out of a slaying and is perpetuated by retaliatory acts of revenge; a blood feud.
2. A bitter, destructive feud.

Vendetta...thank you Caul. I would never have known.
By the way, it's usually called DELUSIONS of gradeur. Not 'illusion'.
de·lu·sion (d-lzhn)
n.
1.
1. The act or process of deluding.
2. The state of being deluded.
2. A false belief or opinion: labored under the delusion that success was at hand.
3. Psychiatry. A false belief strongly held in spite of invalidating evidence, especially as a symptom of mental illness: delusions of persecution.
I just thought that since we were in the process of resorting to definitions in our attacks...

-Nope, just when idiots try to speak.
"To try and relate any of this is like bringing the 10 Commandments down from Mt. Sinai on stone tablets...(tablets that can be destroyed and eroded with time)."
-The stone tablets may have been destroyed, but the Ten commandments are still passed down, because if you believe in god or not they are good rules for a society to live by. Your words fade because they are worthless, but way to make them seem important by comparing them to the ten commandments.
"There is no way to relate the things we all feel in the deepest recesses of our hearts without packaging them into words...(words that can be redefined and twisted and misunderstood)."
-Words can be twisted and misunderstood. Yours come out twisted in a bad attempt to seem clever or have a hidden deeper meaning.
"There is no REAL communication but that which is made in complete silence."
-It is like you are a parody of yourself. Is it a contradiction or is it? Are my responses foolish or wise? Do my posts make no sense because I am leading you to figure it out for yourself, or because my barely coherent babbling looks clever to me? Throwing out ripped off half assed "zen"-like quotes is not clever.
----------------------------
Why is it I can't say anything here without someone saying I'm trying to be clever?
The way I see it, I'm just trying to express myself. That's all.
But again, that's not going to be possible. You're only going to hear what you want to hear.
Perception is everything, which is pretty much EXACTLY what I've stated here REPEATEDLY.
Funny how every time you open your fucking mouth now, you're just proving my fucking point. But of course, you have no idea you're doing it, or you'd take the hint and shut the fuck up.

A few of you seem to have a problem with my notion that its the ripples we make on the pond of history (excuse the metaphor), regardless of whether we are specifically remembered by people, that makes up whatever 'purpose' we have here.
Our 'purpose', if there is one, is in the way we carry the torch of humanity forward.
====
How are you going to make "ripples on the pond of history" without being remembered? History *is* memory, dude. There is no objective truth here - it's all about what we collectively agree happened.
I could sit on my arse watching Oprah all day every day and still be carrying the torch of humanity forward, simply by being alive. Who's to say what effect either my actions or my inaction will have on humanity? Certainly not you.
"by sitting and doing nothing, by sitting idle, listening for this pretty song of purpose, we're betraying our real purpose which, if anything, is to continue to propel this species forward into the universe"
Apathy is not an unnatural response to the world and I'd argue that it's a necessary one. You have to employ some level of apathy or you would end up killing yourself - because as much beautiful and amazing shit that there is in the world, there's a lot of sadness, a lot of suffering and a lot of pain. If you were to give your full attention to the things that are wrong in the world, day in day out, you would cease to be able to function. And then what good would you be able to do?
Being able to continue to eat your dinner whilst watching starving kids in africa on the news is a protection mechanism, and it's a worthwhile one, no matter how heartless it may seem.

echoing through the ages of time is a fairly selfish pursuit of immortality in the eyes of others. and if you don't try to make your own life better first, you can't help anyone else, and making it easier is the general idea of life in the first place. from the beginning it's not like people built shelter, and skinned animals for the pursuit of the greater good, it was about surviving the easiest way possible. they could've moved to warmer climates, and grazed and ate bugs and gotten mostly the same shit out of all that. all progress was made for only three reasons basically, the need to make things more convenient for survival, curiosity, or the mix of boredom and creativity. if people didn't try to make their lives as convenient as possible then we wouldn't have things like art and technology. that's why so many cultures stayed in the stone age while europe and asia grew into societies. europe and asia had the opportunity and environment to sit around after developing farming and livestock breeding skills. you didn't see that shit in africa, or aboriginal australia, or north/south america. they had art but no technological advancements beyond the basics.
life is about the pursuit of comfort, comfort allows for freedom of thought and progress because it takes your mind off of shit like food, water, getting chased by things with sharp teeth, and freezing the fuck to death. if that's all you worry about you can't do anything else with your brain.
-----------------------------
How is it I can agree with every bit of that, yet still stand by everything I wrote here as well?

Jeeze, this post struck more nerves than my last political post!
Like some of you said, I was mostly just crapping on the page, contradicting myself (AS ALWAYS).
If you speak long enough, you're sure to contradict yourself sooner or later. Of course, the irony is, that's part of what I was talking about here.
If there is life after death, of course this purpose involves much more, but if there is nothing but worms waiting for us, then we can either sulk about this sorry state of affairs all our lives, or we can try to make the most of it by finding a reason to forge ahead.
For me, this seems to be it...the ripples.

I think alot of you are more reactionary and defensive than this is pompous... this particular piece that is. ;)
As far as personal gain vs good for everyone, those do go hand in hand. At least I know, if I play a song to a group of people and they perchance laugh, cry, or rock, and then tell me afterwards that they were sincerely moved by it, then it is the connection that I made that is so gratifying.

When someone rates a post, what to do base the rating system on? Do we rate the writer against his other stuff? (Was this just as good as that last 1.97 overall post?) or do we rate him against what we *think* he's capable of? (You're talented, you can do better, 0).
Do we rate in comparison to other works of art in literary history that have made us think? If so, this is nothing new. Bland at best. It's not inspiring. Basically, just a recycled message that's existed for centuries.
Then again, can these raters really do better than this?
In comparison to everything on the front page right now, this is a +2. Nevermind the fact that others think you're conveying a pompous message. Sometimes we need recycled "Live like there is no tomorrow" messages thrown in our faces to make us realize that we are insignificant.
+2.

echoing through the ages of time is a fairly selfish pursuit of immortality in the eyes of others. and if you don't try to make your own life better first, you can't help anyone else, and making it easier is the general idea of life in the first place. from the beginning it's not like people built shelter, and skinned animals for the pursuit of the greater good, it was about surviving the easiest way possible. they could've moved to warmer climates, and grazed and ate bugs and gotten mostly the same shit out of all that. all progress was made for only three reasons basically, the need to make things more convenient for survival, curiosity, or the mix of boredom and creativity. if people didn't try to make their lives as convenient as possible then we wouldn't have things like art and technology. that's why so many cultures stayed in the stone age while europe and asia grew into societies. europe and asia had the opportunity and environment to sit around after developing farming and livestock breeding skills. you didn't see that shit in africa, or aboriginal australia, or north/south america. they had art but no technological advancements beyond the basics.
life is about the pursuit of comfort, comfort allows for freedom of thought and progress because it takes your mind off of shit like food, water, getting chased by things with sharp teeth, and freezing the fuck to death. if that's all you worry about you can't do anything else with your brain.

"the direction of your life is dependent upon whether you live it in persuit of personal gain or in persuit of a greater good - a grander goal - something that cements your mark upon the face of history such that the repercussions of your actions and the example you live by will echo through the ages and along the corridors of time."

Anyone who feels that life is all about the persuit of comfort are forgetting the age-old truth that life is about stuggle and it's not supposed to be easy.

If it were easy, there would be no pursuit. Somehow, that sentence of yours negated itself.

I couldn't bring myself to read this. I know you're not a stupid man, but you are also long-winded and really really pompous in an unfortunately vacant way.
