Hi Uber.

How are you doing today?

Good, good glad to hear it....

What, me? Oh, I'm not doing so hot, but thanks for asking, I do appreciate the concern.

Yeah, I'll tell you about it, if you're really interested...

I've been working minimum 65 hour weeks since the New Year, really busting my ass, giving it my all etc., etc. I'm a lobbyist for the long term care industry; nursing homes specifically, but developmentally disabled centers too, centers for special needs children, stuff like that.

Through the work that my partner and I have done we made our industry a lot of money this legislative session. Forty five million bucks in new money and back reimbursement payments. This while there is a freeze on new spending in my state.

On top of this it's a daily dead run to kill or alter negative regulatory legislation that comes along. Other advocacy groups and special interests are always coming at your piece of the pie, trying to shift money or killus through unnecessary bureaucratization of the work our facilities perform.

$45 Million.

That's not a huge chunk in the world or even state wide scheme, but, it's still 45 million fucking bucks.

$45 MILLION.

I made it for them.

Here's a small excerpt from a recent article by the president of my Board of Directors:

***
***
It is always interesting to hear what new windmill Michael Moore, of "911" fame, is tilting with in his upcoming movies. Not that he is ever balanced in his attacks, but it is nice to know who is next. It is interesting to know that the "evil health care empire" is next on his agenda.

Certainly, there are "horror stories" in the health care industry, but what is his point in assaulting this profession? We have the best health care in the world in this country, without question. The mistake that Mr. Moore makes is to assume, or propose, that everyone is entitled to every level or type of care. The bottom line is who is going to pay for this care? ...

...The real issue is to control the urge to continue the expansion of programs or services in the "big brother will take care of you" mode and to decide "just what are the priorities." The almighty dollar only stretches so far. If health care is important then we should make it the priority and adequately support it with our available resources. Of course such a simple concept flies in the face of doing what is politically expedient in the face of election or re-election...
***
***

This from the Board President of an association whose membership consists of health care providers.

After the last meeting of our board, last Monday, they decided that family health insurance was too costly. To cover my wife and son cost them about 2400 dollars a year.

Who is going to pay for this care indeed.

Health care a priority? Not for my employers!!

When my wife became pregnant we decided she would stay home with our son until he went to school, to help him. Better to have a parent at home, studies and all say. We'd lose out on our money making potential, but it is better for him. We'd make ends meet and go without for a few years. Besides, insurance for both of them was covered under my employer so that cost was saved...

*****$45 million dollars*****

And they can't see how it's "responsible as a for profit association" (their words at the meeting) to pay for my kid's fucking insurance?

I'm not a happy person with this decision, but what the hell can I do? I decided to start shopping for insurance, I'll squeeze a little more and it'll be alright.

I think as people we should just know a little more about first aid.

I mean when Keith and I were drunk last summer and throwing machetes at a stump and wearing flip flops and Keith's toe got split open did we go to the doctor? Hell no we didn't we opened that bitch up, squeezed in a little crazy glue, wrapped it in some duct tape and to this day it is the nicest looking scar you could ever see on a man's foot.

Or something to that affect.

I haven't even been checking this post since I last reviewed it.

<looks around>

Everything seems to be under control. Few items need clearing up.

1. katy, please post a camwhore immediately. Also, is the eye your contribution to the Uber boobs dealy? How about the heavenward pointing breast? I must know...

2. Mistress, the problem isn't affording insurance, I can. I'll even be getting back what I was already contributing out of my pay to help cover the cost. The bigger deal was the fact that the tests had to be done right then and there. No time to do anything about coverage, so I had a big out of pocket.

3. badass, superglue always works. The ER now has a glue that is basically just superglue they use in place of stitches in certain cases.

4. I still haven't heard from the doctor about the boys X-rays. This makes me fucking irate.

Carry on my children.

The US spends more per person on Healthcare than the UK.

In my opinion the UK has better average treatment, especially with the rise of the private sector meaning you can have all the trimmings if you want to pay for it.

Isn't the entire system doomed for failure really?

Look at it this way, when you buy insurance you are essentially betting an insurance company that you will get sick. The insurance company is betting that you won't. But everybody gets sick - right like death and taxes. At my old job, we were self insured, probably this job too but I don't work in that department here so I don't have inside info on what goes on. Let me tell you WHAT one premature baby saps the entire trust account.

Then there is the whole issue of the cost of preventative care versus treatment. When we had to take Sam's mom to the emergency room a couple of weeks ago I got to see this first hand. I think there were maybe two other people in there with actual, real medical emergencies. The rest of them appeared to be using the emergency room as their source of primary care. People with insurance and a primary care physical don't go to the emergency room with a sore throat, that's what the doctor person is for. Maybe in certain cases if you have a really high fever but general oh damn my throat is still hurting I think I have strep that's not a 911 call that is a regular doctor visit.

and long term care goddamn that is for sure a no win

People are living longer if by living you mean not flat lined.

bah I don't know, maybe we should start shooting sick people like we do lame horses
(insert Cheney joke)

No man, no apologies are needed here. The system IS severely fucked.

I meet with preconcieved notions about what I'm doing every day as a matter of course in my job. At least here I can curse and fume while explaining myself.

Like I've said elsewhere on this site, I agree with some of your views. On this one I'm wholeheartedly in agreement with you. Like Filthy said below, they have the better shake.

Me, right now I'd just like to have the couple grand back that I got to unexpectedly spend recently on what is a minor test really.

It's a long road to get things like this accomplished. Like I said, three years solid those two things were my daily life. They still are a big part of my work, they're just on the road to being self sustaining now. If it works I did something good in my life, if not...well I tried.

Now I just need to find some insurance in the meantime.

So, yeah, I'd say you made some assumptions, or at least some statements colored by your own perceptions.

I'd venture to say that most people automatically have a negative reaction when they think of a nursing home or a lobbyist. That colors what they say and do in regards to those two topics.

You made a mental jump that I was a Washington lobbyist. You made an assumption about the direction the money I lobbied for was going to be spent in. You assumed motives and culpability on my part without knowing what the work I do is.

Either way...

Scourge: I was just going by what you told me, which was you made this company $45 million dollars through lobbying Washington politicians. That's just about all I needed to hear. That's $45 million that's now not in the hands of the patients you serve.

My argument is for socialized healthcare. No assumptions were made.
=====
Wrong and wrong.

Not Washington, state level. And it wasn't for the company it was for the entire industry.

$45 million is for the implementation of the MInimum Data Set Reimbursement.

Some of that goes towards profits, I'd be a liar if I told you that it didn't.

The majority of MDS Reimb. cash is spent on direct patient care however. In the neighborhood of 85% is direct care upgrades and delivery of care. Quality of Care initiatives etc. Better beds, better equipment, better facilities

The other is for past due operating cost, so in a sense it is profit...If a business or an agency isn't properly funded, it folds.

Nursing homes in my state are reimbursed at about 64 cents on the dollar spent for patient care. Every year, upwards of 50 homes close, primarily in rural areas. These are often the onlty medical facility of any kind in those places.

Until you have a system that can deliver what you want you have to look to maximize the efficiency and prepare for the changes to the system that you seek.

Would it be better to shut down these homes and wait for the system you like, or use what we have as a starting point and work to make changes to it to reach a desirable end goal?

That is what I do. Those two links show that.

Within another year I could have my choice of: An English Degree -or- A Political Science Degree. Both are good for very little!! I had a writing and science heavy curriculum. I am currently not in any classes as this is the busy season for me. I could do some juggling and take a degree in a number of areas with only a few additional classes added to my course load.

Though it should be, school isn't on the top of my priority list right now. I already have an established career. I already retired from my first path in the work world. I posted about it here a while back.

Bah, I finally get to go back this summer after a half year hiatus. Rather looking forward to it.

Being a lobbyist for the healthcare industry... Dare I say "it serves you right"?

It's complete BULLSHIT, and people like you are making it happen doing the work you do - lobbying so the industry can continue to stick it to the little guy, skyrocketing our healthcare costs to a level where a single sickness can not only be physically dibilitating, but financially as well.

Find another job. OR, just start doing a bad one. Then maybe you'll have healthcare.
=====
I'm not sure where to even start with this...

I didn't think you worked off of assumptions ETS. I thought you were the voice of reasoned and considered opinions here on Uber?

Your idea of socialization that I'm working so hard against? I'm an active worker on the Illinois Health Care Justice Act, which works towards just what you think is the solution. Google it motherfucker, I helped write the god damn thing.

"Free and available healthcare is paramount in a civilized society."

I agree with this statement.

"These greedy fucks in your industry think it's ok to continue the lie that our healthcare system would suffer by offering public, centralized healthcare. They're wrong."

I'm in the industry and I'm also one of the primary authors of the Illinois Act to offer services in Long Term Care to people no matter what their income and no matter where they want to receive it. That means in theior homes...I actively moved to help people stay out of nursing homes and not go bankrupt to do it.

You want to throw accusations at me? Pffft, you don't have any idea what I do. My work has MADE health care more affordable and accessible for MILLIONS of people. What has your work done to help others?

Much better to artificially cap the damages you can receive for the drunk doctor botching the operation than to open your bloody eyes and realize that the insurance companies rake in record profits EVERY YEAR and see that rates will never drop. Cap the amount you can sue for? Great, even bigger profits for the industry.

Publicly-traded companies are not allowed to drop rates because that doesn't increase company value. That's the fact. Without legislation, insurance rates will never drop.

he spent less than 5 minutes with me and i'm just going to do what every fucking illegal immigrant does and give them fake names from now on.

I have no idea how the American healthcare system works, but that sucks. Over here, to get it all paid for, you just lie and say you had an accident, and accident compensation corporation will pay for it. I had a stress fracture built up over 6 months of running. It wouldn't be covered (not an accident) so I told them I fell off my mountain bike. Now it's all free. x-rays, podiatrist, physiotherapist, scans....

Lie cheat and steal, the government deserves it.

Being a lobbyist for the healthcare industry... Dare I say "it serves you right"?

$500 for x-rays = insane

$100 for 'analysis' = insane

Who knows what a surgery would cost!

THIS is the problem with private healthcare. Doctors and hospitals can charge whatever the hell they want for each and every procedure with little or no restriction. Ambulance ride? That's about a grand.

At this point, the only way to save healthcare is to socialize it. PERIOD. Even then, who says there can't be private doctors who are allowed to compete with the public system?

Who says it has to be all of nothing? If someone is willing to pay for their care, and it's worth it, let them continue to practice privately if they choose. But for the old, the poor, and the middle class working stiff, we need assurance that our kids are going to be taken care of - and that it's not going to destroy us financially to make that a reality.

Some things are too inherent to our well-being to be without some government intervention. That's why monopolies are supposed to be illegal, that's why we have public and income-based housing, that's why we have social security, that's why we have homeless shelters.

Without these things, the quality of life in our society is depleted, because there'd be people dead on the sidewalk on our way to work. Disease is more likely to gain a foothold. Children of poor families who can't afford healthcare send their children to school with other families who can. You think they're not going to share sickness or disease? Of course they will.

Free and available healthcare is paramount in a civilized society.

These greedy fucks in your industry think it's ok to continue the lie that our healthcare system would suffer by offering public, centralized healthcare. They're wrong.

Like I said before, there is no reason not to allow any doctor to practice privately who so chooses. He'd just better be worth what he charges now, because he has REAL competition!

How do you decide to become a lobbyist? You're what going to your high school guidance counselor and he says, "well scourge from these tests it would appear that you have no soul. My advice is to either become an NFL ref or a lobbyist."

I'm just askin'

I really don't understand how american healthcare works. I haven't got a clue how british healthcare works either, but I did just walk into the hospital the other week and have a series of x-rays without having to hand over any cash, so I suspect we've got the better deal.

Lobby = bribe. You need someone with deep pockets to slip you money, then you in turn slip it to the politicians in the form of hookers and blow. And don't let this guy tell you otherwise.
====
There is some truth to this. There is also a lot of misconception in it.

On a national level, you're pretty much dead on. State politics? Not so much. There is a lot of research and education behind what we do. Bribes are getting to be harder to make with transparency laws and ethics reform.

You're a techie, right Geek? So my perception is that you type code all day from behind your thick glasses and wear short sleeve button shirts. Have trouble finding dates. Socially awkward. Think people without the same array of technological knowledge as yourself are stupid.

Don't operate from a position of what you've been fed to believe without backing it up or you make mistakes.

Money has never crossed my hands to a politician.

I guess I left the LOL off there, eh? But to answer your questions....

"You're a techie, right Geek?" Yes.
"So my perception is that you type code all day from behind your thick glasses and wear short sleeve button shirts." I wear long sleeve shirts and roll the sleeves up in warm weather. And don't forget the tape on the bridge of my glasses. Pocket protector too. You can never be too careful.
"Have trouble finding dates." Check
"Socially awkward." Bingo
"Think people without the same array of technological knowledge as yourself are stupid." Aye aye Cap'n.

Cool house.

Did you renovate it, or did you buy it already fixed up?
=====
I've done everything to it.

At the turn of the century a guy bought it and changed it up a bit. He added a long front porch and bayed out some of the windows. That was in 1905.

I've done a lot it.

New roof, new wiring, refinish the floors, upgrade the kitchen and bath.

The biggest pain in the ass was the wallpaper. Six layers thick, two of them had been painted over. Every room and every ceiling.

In a year or two I'm going to restore the original clapboard siding.

If by professional you mean a college grad, no. I don't have my degree yet, though I'm still working on it.

Lobbying is a lot of talking a lot of hand shaking and a lot of ass kissing. The association I work for has a huge stake in politics, during campaign season I go work on campaigns, walking precincts and such. The upshot is that I get to go to all kinds of swanky fundraisers and events and drink free expensive booze and eat free expensive food. You just have to do it in the company of assholes.

Illinois, where I live, politics are fucking crazy. Political ideologies don't mean anything, it's all based off of expediency and the whole "what have you done for me lately" thing. The whole job is chaotic just by it's nature...
