To the Western world the al Askariya Golden Mosque holds no particular significance. However, to Shia Muslims its one of the holiest sites in Islam. In fact this Mosque held the remains of several direct descendents of the prophet Muhammed.
On Wednesday February 22nd 2006 at approximately 7am Iraq time, several men dressed as Iraqi police blew the fucker to smithereens.
There is already talk in Iraq of civil war between the already strained factions of Shia and Sunni Muslims. In the wake of the attack Shia Muslims have already burned several Sunni Mosques and killed a few Sunni clerics.
On a lighter note the Iranian supreme ayatollah guy already issued a statement in which he accused Israel and the US of blowing up the Mosque.
I do not have the time to make much of a post about this, but this issue isn't getting a whole lot of attention from the television news networks at the moment. I found the story at Reuters online, if anyone is interested. Just asking but what do you think will happen if Iraq goes into full scale civil war? Will the US and other forces withdraw perhaps?

We need to get the Fuck out of Iraq now. No matter what happens.
I think we should just let stuff happen in the middle east and stay the hell out of it.

Yeah we're fucked if we stay in Iraq much longer. Your average soldier's normal mission? Go drive around, get shot at and look for bombs strapped to guard rails. When you get shot at, shoot back. When you see a bomb, call someone to blow it up for you.
And now? YAAAAAAYYYY!!! ETHNIC HOLY WAR YAAAAAYYY!!!

I partially agree with axolotlxotwhatever, the Kurds can take care of themselves, so take your troops and put them there, help them defend themselves, help build a working economy and a healthy social environment. I don't think either the Sunnis or the Shiites are behaving themselves, so just show them that when they settle down, the U.S. will respect them and help them.

They really should divide the country. The Kurds are capable of taking care of themselves, and the Shiites are fairly calm...it's the Sunnis right in the middle that are causing trouble. If Iraq was just split up into three parts, the two "good" ones could keep the middle in check.

I say do one of two things:
1) Leave and let them go at each other. Hopefully they will all get exterminated and we dont have to put up with their shit any more.
2) Divide the country up into 3 sections - one for each major group. Then leave.

I'm partially with ya there, Stabkill. I wouldn't give them any arms as that would still be involvement. They have their own ways to kill each other, be it bombs, guns, knives, what have you. I say leave them be and they'll either kill each other off or sort it out. Either way, something will get resolved internally.

By the way, I saw that mosque in person. However, the one I remembered the MOST was a huge-ass one near Baghdad that was still under construction.

This is exactly why the U.S. was stupid to get involved. I, for one, would love to see the Sunnis get a major ass kicking.
The Administration has its head up its ass. Why don't we just do like we did in the old days and arm someone we like to the teeth and let them do whatever they want? Give Iraq another Saddam because they seem to not know any other way.

America was self-appointed. But there needs to be law and order and justice. We learned that after WW2. I think Americans were so deeply horrified by the fact that they sat around doing nothing while all this happened. So they said they would "never let it happen again". Now I put that in quotes because obviously it has happened since then and will happen again later, I'm just giving an explanation why we feel the need to step in sometimes.
I'm fairly apathetic. As long as they don't share a border to me they can do what they wish.

A police chief is appointed by the local government, he hires staff to keep the peace in that town. Who appointed America the police of the world? If Bush campaigned against his country policing the world, then why did he send his troops there to do just that?

Civil wars are to do with local matters, not with any other country. Look at it this way: you're having an argument with your neighbour on the front lawn. Would you be entirely happy with a stranger who happens to be walking by to jump in uninvited and partially uneducated on what the argument's about?
---------
You mean, like a police officer? That's part of their job. It's why America in the 90s was referred to as "policing the world" and it's one of the things Bush campaigned against.
----
So? Think of it like this. Already the insurgents hate us. Let us assume that the majority of the civilian population view us neutrally, not hating us but not liking us a lot. If they start to have a civil war, and we try and stop them...that is trouble.
What happens when you build a wall between two fighting kingdoms? What is the first thing that is destroyed?
It's the wall.

Bah, it's bad enough that we're trying to support Iraq so it can support itself.
If they want to tear each other apart, get the soldiers out and let Iraq go at it.
So what if other countries stepped in during the US Civil War.
Seeing two groups of nearly identical religious ideology blow each other up is worth it.

This is very interesting.
I disagree that people shouldn't interfere in civil wars. There's a long rich tradition of doing so (American Revolution, Somalia, Serbia, and hundreds of others) and civil wars often produce the worst sorts of human rights abuses, which is just about the main thing we should be using our troops to stop in the first place.
