My Lady rests this afternoon, still in
The pale knit dress she wore before the dawn
Subdued her, creeping up under the skin.
What visions are there on her eyelids drawn?
What memory of dreams? what cause a yawn?
As soon as it coheres, it disappears—
She will not be disturbed while I am near.
For now, her bed is but a private nest,
The sheets a snug cocoon, though none emerge.
This afternoon, the Lady takes her rest.
Below the form a reading is deferred
From tired eyes: this word and that converge.
These nights and days, she dotes upon a hook,
Attending more the burdens than the books.
A scarlet pillow pressed between her hands,
The others tossed aside in sudden fits ...
I am transfixed, and share a single glance
With Ritz, the recluse Siamese. He sits,
Awaiting something unforeseen. He sits.
'Know'st thou, companion, loyal guardian,
The realms of sleep thy mistress dwells within?'
He mounts the cabinet in a steady leap:
Below him are the needles, in a drawer
Not unlike yours, and bands piled in a heap.
He licks a paw then tumbles to the floor,
Absolves himself again beside the door
And quick as he appeared, he disappears—
As if to leave no sign that he was here.
An object holds our gaze for just the time
It takes to know the object. Through a haze
Of tendrils from these cigarettes of mine
I find no answer for the passing days
Except to leave those lost, inside the maze.
'O mistress—O my stubborn, bullish Moon—
Must I depart, a mourner from the tomb?'
