Cat Country 98.1 (www.wctk.com) is doing a radiothon to raise funds for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. My radio station streams its audio, so you can listen to their efforts online.
They keep on playing the most touching country songs, interposed with parents talking about how their children had cancer or other childhood diseases and had either died, or were cured by the efforts of St. Jude's hospital.
One mother was talking about how her son had cancer, and while she held him, he was taken off of life support and died peacefully in her arms. That same day, the other children in the hospital released balloons into the sky with messages written on them so that he would be able to read them when he got to Heaven.
One father was talking about how his son had looked up at the puffy clouds in the sky on a cloudy day, and had said, "Daddy, that's what Heaven will look like when I go there." No child, at that age, should be looking up at the sky and thinking about dying.
Right now the donations are at $100,423 from the radiothon. However large that number may seem, it's not enough, considering what the hospital does, not just for children and their families, but also for the community.
The hospital shares its research so that other hospitals will benefit from it, and the survival rate for acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), the most common form of childhood cancer, has reached over 90 percent.
"St. Jude does both laboratory and clinical research in order to find cures for catastrophic diseases of children. Much of this research, especially in the laboratory, leads to discoveries of the basic workings of the body's cells. Therefore, some of our work has broader implications than childhood diseases and provides insights into adult diseases as well." (Taken from their website)
I'm bringing this to the attention of Uber because it's a very worthy cause. Every little bit helps, so I'm hoping that some of you will take the time to donate to the hospital today.
You can check out the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital's website at http://www.stjude.org/. You can donate there, or on my radio's website.
The direct donation line is 1-800-963-HOPE.
I will be taking donations to my paypal account today (Manders17pshs.at.yahoo.com) for those that wish to participate in the very first Uberthon but don't have a credit card. I have a seller's account, thus I have a credit/debit card that I will use to transfer the total amount to the hospital.
I will post the statement showing the donations, and the transaction to St. Jude's as proof. Paypal also has a buyer protection system, so you can rest assured that ALL of the money will go to this charity.
I've donated. Will you?

This whole cancer deal seems like complete shit. My mom has to change her diet and all sorts of weird shit - because it was colon cancer, she's probably going to decrease the amount of red meat she eats, and for the duration of the chemo, she can't eat raw fruits or vegetables. She'd really like to start drinking rooibos tea (supposedly it's good for warding off cancer/improving digestive health), but she can't because it would help nourish the bad cells in addition to the good cells.
Fortunately, between her being goddamn strong and the antiemetics they've put her on, she's not feeling nausea, but she does get tired periodically, and it pisses me off a lot because I can't help out at home; my dad is a foreman for a county road department for 8 hours a day, so he's usually beat when he comes home, and my sister avoids labor like the plague (though supposedly she's been better about helping around the house).
I suppose what bugs me is that God forbid something had happened, I'd be without a mom, and we've gotten real close during the college search and even more so since this is my first year away from home.
==========================================
That's rough, man. It's hard when you feel like you're the only one doing anything to pull slack around the house with a sick parent. My wife's granddad is going fast and seems like us and her mom are the only ones who care about it, so I can relate.

Sparkle - I'm a child cancer survivor. I *know* what it was like to go through chemo. Sorry to hear about your mom.
No one said you had to treat kids more special, cancer affects ALL ages; St. Jude just happens to specialize in pediatrics cancer. See your point though, people tend to be more altruistic when kids are at stake vs. grown adults...not saying its right but that's just the way most people tend to be wired. Perhaps you might consider raising awareness of cancer research and prevention for adults.
And incidentally, it was MY dollar that I gladly donated to sponsor Manda's 'thon on the Uberboard, and I don't regret it.

Yeah, but you forgot the story where my mom is getting chemo now to ensure that any little malignant discrepancies not taken care of by the surgery are taken care of, and how I can't be home to help, because I'm away at school.
Don't give me your sob stories about kids. Why should I treat them more special, especially when I loathe them and have my own shit to worry about?
Go pull on the heartstrings of people with no weight on their minds.

You prissy bitch. You know how people are here. And you post something like this and expect us all to play kumbaya and hold hands and chant in love and harmony? Eat shit. And it's none of your fucking business how much anyone donates to anything. Fuck you for asking.
======================================================================
Goddamn OCG, what's your problem? It's a good cause and she didn't say anyone HAD to participate or list what they gave. Go stick your scrotum in a blender and set it to "frappe".
I don't care how good the cause is, Spanky, she's pissed because the people who laugh at a girl in a tub shitting on her own face said something mean! We posted rude shit after 9/11. We posted rude shit after the tsunami. We posted rude shit after the hurricans. We ain't gonna play nice for someone's pet cause.
And yeah, she asked everyone to tell her how much they gave so she can feel good that she was responsible for it. Manda, we get it. You're a good person. You're compassionate and wonderful. And the dollar you wasted on the Uberboard should have gone to the hospital. You hypocrite.
~~~~
HAHAHAHA. WASNT MY DOLLAR.
Now what, bitch?
I'm not mad about you guys saying something mean. I understand what Uber is about. I was just calling Zoidberg what I think he is. It was warranted.
I was just calling you what I think YOU are. You called me a prissy bitch. Oh, boohoo.
And if I wanted to feel good, I'd masturbate.
I just wanted to make a point that every little bit helps, and that it all adds up. People hear that and probably think, "Oh, well, that's nice, but I only donated $10." It's nice to see how your money went to a good cause and how it adds to the final amount.
The people that donated were probably going to donate to a good cause anyways. Most of the people that donated did so weeks or months before I posted. This post wasn't about ME, so get over YOURSELF.
---------------------
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
Fucking PWNED, like, redundant and shit.
Good show, Manda. The masturbation line sealed it, babe. Uber has warped and twisted you even more than you previously were (ASSUMPTION ALERT); we're so very proud.
OneCheapGeek,
I wasn't asking for everyone to hold hands and yaddayadda. I was hoping that the assholes of this site would maybe show some self-restraint for just one cause. What these kids and these families go through... I wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy.
And as for asking how much people donated, they can choose not to if they don't want to. I was going to tally up how much people donated so that maybe people like you would quit being so damn bitter about every little thing and see that there's actually some good in the world.
Manda,
Do you work for the station?
I work for WMCI out of Mattoon, IL and we are kicking off our fundraiser this month, our radioathon is at the end of the month.
Everyone should know that there is an option called "Partner in Hope". Basically, St. Jude's will bill you each month in the amount you choose (at least $20.00) for one year.
St. Judes is not only a children's hospital, but a research hospital that has contributed an amazing about to the knowledge we have today of Cancer. The thing that I think is most important is that the families of children that receive treatment are never asked to pay. Treatment for A.L.L. (common childhood cancer 90% cure rate!!!woo) costs a half million dollars on average and the families are never billed. They have housing, transportation, meals and treatment for the child. No bills. NONE! Donations make all the difference.
Ok, I'm off the soapbox, but this is SO important. Give what you can.
