Every day after school, my old boss's daughter would crash into the office through the back door and sit at the table in the kitchen area. After walking around the office for forty-five minutes, asking her father for money, making copies of her hands and prank calling the receptionist, Rebecca would finally settle down and attempt to start her homework.
I should mention that his daughter had some learning disabilities and developmental problems. I'm not exactly sure what she had, but I wouldn't be surprised if severe ADHD was part of her problem. At sixteen years old, she acted like and resembled a seven year old, complete with pigtails, corduroy overalls and yes, even a lunch box.
From the beginning, Rebecca had taken a liking to me. It was probably because I didn't give her dirty looks every time she walked into my office. I liked Rebecca too. Something about her innocence really warmed my heart, and every time she stopped by my desk to visit, I made sure that I gave her a lot of attention. Besides, it was a temporary job and I wasn't as swamped as the other girls, so I had time to give her.
It wasn't abnormal for Rebecca to ask "big girl questions." One day she asked Debbie, who did accounting, what a penis looked like. After Debbie had an asthma attack, she told Rebecca to ask her mother. I sat at my desk in the other room and laughed to myself.
Even though Rebecca had some problems, she was still very eager to help us out and she was also very eager to learn. Those little tasks meant everything to her, and her father (my boss) would always thank me for giving her that little extra attention.
My temporary position was coming to its end. My boss really liked me, but not so much for my work ethic as for the special touch I seemed to have with his daughter. On the last day of my assignment, he asked me if I would mind tutoring his daughter. He would pay me twice what he was paying me to do office work and I could make whatever schedule I wanted.
I agreed.
Since Rebecca liked me so much, she was always very willing to impress me. She listened to every word I said, followed my directions and actually seemed to pay attention to me when I spoke to her. After a few months of working together, her teacher told her parents that she had made some improvements and was not as disruptive in class as she used to be.
After receiving that news, her father gave me a $500 dollar bonus. The money was nice, but I was thrilled that I was able to help this little girl feel normal.
The next week, Rebecca burst into the door and said, "I have a big project due. I need to make a poster and everything!"
"Oh yeah?" I asked.
"Yep. I want to look at some pictures to put on the poster," she said.
"All right, we'll go on the internet and see what we can find, then we'll print them out and glue them on," I said.
Rebecca skipped over to the computer. She pulled an extra chair over for me and I signed her onto the internet. I asked, "What kinds of pictures are you looking for?"
"I think I just want some clip art, of like, kids holding hands and stuff," she said.
"Well, what kind of project is this?"
"It's about, like, kids who are different colors who like each other and stuff," she said.
In my mind I thought, "Ok, this is about diversity. Easy enough."
I sat next to her and guided her through searching on Google. We found all different types of pictures of all different types of races. She did an excellent job and I was very proud of her.
Rebecca started leafing through the pictures when she discovered that she didn't have anyone of Asian descent to put on her poster. We went back to Google and did a search on the words "Japanese clip art."
A whole bunch of links popped up and Rebecca clicked on the first one.
The words "JAPPER WHORE" popped up on the screen, followed by "FUCK," "SLUT," "CUM SUCKING WHORE," flashing in big, bright letters. Then, a Japanese woman with her legs splayed popped up accompanied by the sounds of moaning and screaming.
"Rebecca!" I shouted.
When I looked over at her, her eyes glazed over as a picture of a huge black cock was thrusting in and out of the woman.
This all happened in the matter of seven seconds.
I quickly jumped up in front of the screen and turned the volume down. "Why don't you go and get your social studies book so we can figure out what else we need to put on the poster," I stated.

As soon as she walked out of the room, I tried desperately to close the browser. I guess when the other girls heard the sounds of moaning and screaming, they got curious and walked in to see what was going on.
When they walked into the room, what they saw was me sitting there muttering, "Jesus fucking Christ" and smashing the keyboard. As I tried to explain to Debbie what had happened, my boss walked in with a teary-eyed Rebecca.
"I...I...clip art...Japanese...WHORE...WHORE...um....accident?"
He wasn't too pleased.
Struggling to figure out how to make the situation right, I stood up, pointed to the screen and stated, "Well, her project is about diversity, and I would say this is a good example."
I then walked out of the room, picked up my coat and proceeded to leave the office, never to return again.
At least he was nice enough to send me my final check. Less the cost of therapy for Rebecca, though.

Used to be a youth counsellor at a battered women's shelter. Once arranged a water fight between adults and children. When you consider most of the women who worked at the shelter weighed twice what I do (so three times most children,) you'd think the odds would be in their favor, but when you consider these were inner city kids who already knew how to use guns... well, the staff should have seen it coming. While this led to many happy memories for abused children, it sadly did not lead to a raise.

Sacrilicious - Her parents were actually surprised that I left. They didn't think it was that big of a deal, but at that time tutoring Rebecca was 1 of 3 part-time jobs that I had in addition to going to college full-time. I kind of used it as an excuse to take it easy and give something up.
I worked with her for a long time and it helped her to get the structure that she needed. My sister-in-law works there now and she said that she never causes trouble like she did before, so I like to think that I gave her the tools to be able to keep to tasks.

If this truly happened this way, and it seems it did, would you consider another shot at an explanation? Anyone who uses the 'net knows it could have happened to anybody, god knows any girl who has babysat or tutored has at least a few stories about things gone awry. And it sounds like you were making a real difference in this girl's life.
