This picture was taken during a hike I went on recently... thousands of ladybugs (more than you can see in this picture, obviously) just hanging out on the side of the trail. On of them even hitched a ride on my stepsons shirt and hiked with us for a little while.

i went to a soccer tournament in michigan a few years back. it must have been some mating or migrating season or something. fucking swarming plagues of those things.

Don't know if it's been said before, but those look more like Asian beetles than Ladybugs. The former are not helpful to the eco-system and need to be eradicated.

Of course ladybugs (or ladybirds as we call them over here) are not 'true' bugs (order hemiptera) but are in fact beetles (of the order Coleoptera)
Most are predatory although some species just eat mildew...the pussies.
What you saw was probably an emerging overwintering swarm. They all huddle together to hibernate through winter then wake up, get some heat into their system (since they are endothermic) and go about their buisness.
God I LOVE zoology!

That's kinda cool. I love ladybugs. We also have a spot in Pismo Beach where the monarchs hang out for like 4 months every winter. Thousands and thousands just hanging out in this small grove of eucalyptus trees... it's awesome.
