Rd. 5: pairings/theme posted 4.13 -- posts due by 4.17
Winner announced 4.19
Some notes about this round:
The turnaround time for Round 2 is, obviously, much shorter, as posts are due by 11:59PM Eastern, Monday 3.27. The long stretch of Round 1 was for the Shamrock Open competitors and so anyone who wasn't comfortable with poetry could have some time to research forms and styles.
As neither Doodles nor rad1101 submitted an entry, the spot that the winner of that pairing would have advanced to has been filled by the Round 1 loser with the highest score.
That user is...Axolotl...who gets another chance to wow us with lines composed about fucking an inflatable animal (or something equally as disturbing).
Pairs were again drawn at random - from the Washington Redskins Hat of Playoff Disappointment - which explains why the brackets don't flow logically from one to the next.
Again, each round's matchups will be drawn at random.
Some notes about Round 1:
Ratings were taken as-is, with no adjustments made. Unsurprisingly this round had a large number of -1s and -2s, some given as legitimate ratings and others possibly given just on principle or for reasons not pertaining to the event. As such, determining which ratings should be dismissed and which should be accepted is likely impossible. None of the races were too close to call, so it's not as if a negative rating proved the deciding factor.
Well, the closest race was between nitty34 (0.51) and Shlongy (0.5), but we know how that turned out.
And, though I feel it ridiculous to mention this, I'll do it just the same to avoid future complications - if you post work that proves to be someone else's, you will be disqualified.

I was surprised by the turnout for Round 1, and quite impressed by the submissions.
I'd give each matchup the same great, in-depth treatment that Brdn gave the Shamrock Open posts, but 24 entries are a lot to assess and I fear would prove to be more than an eyeful for everyone. So maybe now that the numbers are a bit more manageable there can be some proper coverage paid.

This competition is over. Circe one, it exposed Orgasmatron for the control freak idiot that he is and it made CaptainObvious shit his pants and take a temper tantrum sabattical. It also allowed Shlongy to post some shit under a new heading and it bought nitty out of hiding. I can't remember anyone else who was in it, they were all too insignificant.

indeed. but i would not be mad if thorns posted a song that he assembled or whatever. i think that one of the things about poetry is the varying mediums it can be presented through, and how much those different mediums mean. i mean, reading poetry to an audience is one of the most underrated skills in the arts because of the knowledge the reader must hold in order to convey the proper voice. but it's no big thang, really...

I told you that I thought the video was funny. I also told you that I felt the poem wasn't very good and that as this was a writing comp. I was judging you solely on your words. If you take the video away, the text falls apart.
See below for my idea regarding this if for some reason I'm stupid enough to try Fupa 2 next year. While it's creative, and very funny, I don't exactly consider it fair to present a work in that fashion because the opponent may not have the same capability. Say Cpt. Thorns was to post a song he wrote...a poem he put to music. Would it be fair to his competitor if they were incapable of doing the same thing? However, as I didn't think about this beforehand and reference it in the rules, I'm forced to leave it up to the opponent's discretion.
Like I said, if your post wasn't submitted for a competition I'd have given it +2s across the board.
It's uber-friendly, and entertaning.
And I know what you mean re: giving attention to the problem. However there's only so much you can take a gnat buzzing by your ear before you kill it.

Of course, none of them involved you either, so I'm wondering if making everyone put up with your grief is a condition of participation.

I'm going to stand by the fact that this doesn't have too many rules:
Write and post something original.
Incorporate the theme in your poem.
Don't plagiarize.
I'll gladly add "no photoshops, animated .gifs, or videos" to that next year, in order to make the playing field level for everyone and to ensure no one has an advantage or a means of drawing reviews that have nothing to do with their work.
Maybe theming will prove to be a bad idea. Maybe not.
I felt that either drawing titles from a pool or having competitors swap titles was a bad idea, as poetry typically isn't nearly as much about plot or story as it is feeling. Titles, in my mind, would have been far too limiting.

catalyst -- i can't help it if my words speak to so many, it's more a burden than anything else. and don't get me wrong orgasmo, i might be fucking around a bit but i honestly rate every poem that i read -- with the exception of shlongy's and nitty's, but neither of those affected anyone but the parties just mentioned or myself, so it isn't a big deal. you guys really just need to relax, in all honesty. yeah shlongy's reviews of every poem might get tiresome, but the fact that he rates every one with a -2 (save mine because apparently i'm awesome) makes his ratings pretty much arbitrary. he understands this, the problem is that you guys don't seem to. that's why i don't think it's a big deal.
that being said, you also have to remember you're posting poetry on uber, which scarcely gets attention and has an even lesser chance of doing well with the general population of uber. me, i've catered to both sides and so far i've made it through unscathed. i love you orgasmo, with most of my heart except for the bits i've already given to shlongy, my mom, and now nitty. i really think that if you just cool out and do some drugs or something, everything will seem better.

I've always assumed that users participating in events like this would post pieces that they created specifically for the competition. That asid, there's no way for anyone to know if something that you've posted - or going to post - was written this week, this year, in 2005, 2004, etc.
I'd say out of fairness it'd be better if everyone submitted original works (original works written during the lifespan of the round).
And, from a personal standpoint, I'd think it'd be more fun and challenging to do so. It shouldn't be to your - or my, or anyone else's - advantage that you wrote a bunch of pieces in the past.
Bowever - as I did not implicitly state it in the 'rules' (and we know how much 'trouble' my being unclear about the 'rules' has caused so far) - I would leave it up to your opponent to say whether or not they have a problem with this.
So before any bartender lookalike raises a stink about this, please note that we're discussing original pieces here and not posting someone else's writing.

I like Shlongy. Not content with being the first person to be disqualified from a poetry competition (possibly in the entire world) - he is now hanging around sneering at other posts, all the while he leaves little nose marks on the windows as he gazes on enviously. I'm not a big poetry person myself, which is why I didn't enter the competition. It was more a comment on the way that many people rate posts on Uber, regardless of whether the work is in a contest or not, whether it is any good or not etc. The whole rate the post not the poster idea that exists here, but that so few follow. That's all.
I could have just said, 'But this place IS a popularity contest Bubba.' I just choose to say it in another way.
As for whether you are popular or not could be debated on either side fairly well I guess. Poet? Well, you wrote a poem. A good one even. That means you meet the criteria for being a poet I guess...

A hunch is just a hunch. No backing information, no inside secrets. That's what makes it a hunch.
To choose to be offended by mine would be a rather odd choice.
I made the remark about the final round because I thought your first entry was outstanding. You came out of the gate strong and I assumed you would continue to post quality work. You usually do. I gave your first post the rating I felt it deserved. What other posts I rated in this contest I did the same. That's what I always do in these contests. Always.
I USUALLY do it on the rest of the posts I rate as well. 'Usually', because I have engaged in some internet dicksuckery in the past.
I'm thinking that I won't do that anymore though. It just doesn't do anyone any good, you know? Plus...Uber ratings?...What do they really mean?

I didn't get to far through the site Shlongy.
I had bookmarked the page a long time ago and had never really listened to many of those. I just use the pictures to remind myself of who it is I'm arguing with about looks. Very helpful tool in that regard.
I'm not sure why, but some of these recordings reminded me of the Replacements a little bit. Well, Replacements Stink. That was the only good one. Choppy and short, instrumentally lacking a good bit, but fairly fast paced and energetic.

Doolittle you say? Little did you know-
The Doolittle Raid of April 18, 1942, was the first air raid by the United States to strike the Japanese home islands during World War II. The mission was notable in that it was the only operation in which United States Army Air Forces bombers were launched from a US Navy aircraft carrier. It was also the longest combat mission ever flown by the B-25 Mitchell bomber. The Doolittle Raid proved that the Japanese home islands were vulnerable to American retaliation for Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor Hawaii on 7 December 1941.
The raid was planned and led by Lieutenant Colonel James H. Doolittle, already a famous civilian aviator and aeronautical engineer before the war. However, the raid had its roots in the mind of Navy Captain Francis Low, who early in the war observed that, under the right conditions, twin-engined Army bombers could be successfully launched from an aircraft carrier. Subsequent calculations by Doolittle indicated that the B-25 Mitchell could be launched from a carrier with a reasonable bomb load, hit military targets in Japan, and fly on to land in China.
In comparison to the devastating B-29 Superfortress attacks against Japan later in the war, the Doolittle raid did little material damage. Nevertheless, when the news of the raid was released, American morale soared from the depths to which it had plunged following Japan's Pearl Harbor attack and subsequent territorial gains. The raid also had some strategic impact in that it caused the Japanese to recall some fighter units back to the home islands for defense; these reassignments subsequently weakened Japan's air capabilities against the Allies at the Battle of Midway and later Pacific Theatre campaigns.

I've always liked the idea of random pairings, so I figured I'd go with that.
I know, I know..."how dare you impose your will on the masses, etc." I made it clear in the first post how the drawing of each round would go. If anyone had a real issue with this they could have said something before the first round was over.
Basically I was so pleased by Brdn's bracket for Shamrock that I thought it'd look nicer if there was a graphic to accompany the pairings.
The notion of a true bracket made me think of seeding the competitors, and I didn't want to play with the hornets nest of determining which users would receive which seeding.
Better to just have it all be determined by chance, right?
