Axlotl's history of Ubersite has been bothering me since it was written. I've been on Ubersite for a long time. Longer than anyone else who comes here on a regular basis except for bart.

I've actually been on here so long that people who signed up in the last year and a half have no clue why I'm near the top of the MVA, seeing as how I haven't contributed anything particularly worthwhile to this website since the middle of 2004.

Reading over his history of Ubersite, I felt like someone who's lived history reading about it, and realizing with a sad smile that the historian got all the dates and times right but completely missed the zeitgeist of the era.

There was a time when Ubersite was different than it was. Don't get me wrong. There has, almost since the beginning, been fluteboys and emus and the like, but once upon a time that wasn't what Ubersite was about. Axlotl went on and on about the "misperception" that Ubersite was a Serious Writer's Forum.

It's a misperception now, but it wasn't always. There used to be a lot of people on here legitimately trying to hone their craft, of greater and lesser talent. There used to be a lot of quality ranting, great real life stories, and original contributions of all kinds.

Not that that stuff doesn't exist on Ubersite now... in point of fact, there's some good, quality stuff out there... but the ratio has changed. Where before you might have gotten story story rant story rant rant emu, now we get emu emu emu emu emu story emu emu rant emu.

Now... I'm sure those of you in the emu contingent are already preparing to devestate me with a -2 and call me a whiner, but I've come to realize I'm not the only one who feels this way. I've seen it expressed by many of the people I consider the best contributors in the history of Uber, both stated publicly and privately. And I've seen the ratings of Ubersite dip slowly but surely over the last year, a big spike from ftw's mspaint notwithstanding.

Why has Uber come to this?

I've been trying to figure out the answer for a long time. I've heard it theorized that if you open up a website to the public, it will invariably devolve to the lowest common denominator... but that's never sat right with me. I've finally figured out the answer... after being on Ubersite for over four years, I've finally come to completely and fully understand it.

Ubersite is a mirror.

It's an odd mirror, to be certain. The reflection it offers back is, more than anything, yours, but it's also a reflection of everyone else who belongs to the site. The content of Ubersite is nothing more or less than the sum total of what everyone who comes here puts into it, and any individual user's experience is that combined with their own personal filter.

This may strike most if not all of you as completely obvious, but the ramifications of this truth are complex.

One immediately derivitave truth is that if you don't put anything of quality into Ubersite yourself, you shouldn't expect to see anything quality on the site.

There has been an attitude on the part of many people who used to be big participators in this site, including me, that Uber doesn't have anything to offer them, and that things have gone downhill since they were more active.

Well to them, and to myself, I say "No shit?"

What did we expect?

The reason my posts have been crap is that I've been saving my best stuff and not putting it on ubersite... I've been waiting for someone else to take the steps to rectify this ship and get it back where it belongs.

I wait no longer.

I offer a challenge to everyone who thinks they have something of quality to say:

Let's take back Ubersite from the rabbits and emus.

I'm talking to you JMG. I'm talking to you Tom Sorrell... and iddqd, Anansie, Ainkara, Jonukah, comicbookguy, BigMike, shandythedog, Apollo, and the dozens of others that used to make Ubersite shine.

The time has come to end our period of bitterness and self imposed exile.

We need to take back the front page from the fucking garbage... and we're not alone. Jack McCallum has been happily writing great stuff day after day, and so has Nath (w_y_a_t_something). There's new guys like Orgasmatron, and I've heard good things about this ghola girl (I think). I've been kind of amiss when it comes to looking at new users, I've got emu nerves.

We need to join them, and make Ubersite something grand again.

I for one am going to start posting quality stuff again... starting Monday I'm going to release some of the fiction that I have stored up on my hard drive.

I challenge others to do the same, or to write new stuff. I have no doubt that we'll get our share of -2s from what TS called the retarded frat boy crowd, but so fucking what?

Let's drown out their shouts with our own.

I think the reason the quality of ubersite has diminished is just because the people who lead interesting enough lives to incite any interesting discussion dont hang around a fucking website all day long.

The internet really isnt a very interesting place once you havent used it for a while.

And you can dance
For inspiration
Come on
I'm waiting

Get into the groove
Boy you've got to prove
Your love to me, yeah
Get up on your feet, yeah
Step to the beat
Boy what will it be

Music can be such a revelation
Dancing around you feel the sweet sensation
We might be lovers if the rhythm's right
I hope this feeling never ends tonight

Only when I'm dancing can I feel this free
At night I lock the doors, where no one else can see
I'm tired of dancing here all by myself
Tonight I wanna dance with someone else

Gonna get to know you in a special way
This doesn't happen to me every day
Don't try to hide it love wears no disguise
I see the fire burning in your eyes

Live out your fantasy here with me
Just let the music set you free
Touch my body, and move in time
Now I now you're mine

You've got to

now I know you're mine, now I know you're mine
Now I know you're mine, now I know you're mine
You've got to

Dude, I agree.

I wish I could help, but I don't have thirty posts worth of good material at my mental beck and call in order to establish myself as someone people will listen to. Roll on UM - that's typically a good set of posts.

UM 4 is coming, I'm waiting on bart. I think I do need to go send him a reminder email.

Sorry, should have read before rating. I wholeheartedly agree. I stopped posting because mine were mostly genuine attempts. Pile of crap, but mostly a genuine attempt. I gave up in the end because Emu posts kept pushing it off the front page.

So to all you bastards that did nothing but yell 'but you never post anything!' last thursday, I will be heeding My Razor's advice. YEAH!

Get ready for more of my crap posts! Woot.

Part of the joy about a site like this is that it's impossible to jump the shark; since there never was a target demographic or a sincere point at all, there can be no such thing as changing too much.

P'raps if you ask nicely, Bart will start an offshoot site similar to B@W for all the posts you don't like. Call it, I don't know, howzabout "Gubersite". Then "Ubersite" will be just the way you want it - complaints, links, mediocre fiction, unfunny pictures and bad comic strips.

Gübersite - stupid shit
Bübersite - NSFW girlybits
Tübersite - NSFW guybits
Zübersite - Rabbits, Emus, dogs/cats
Dübersite - Recreational Pharmaceuticals
Mübersite - Badass Australian Cows
and of course...

i wish i could masturbate to telemundo but my fucking tv doesnt pick it up...

--

The problem with Telemundo is that all the really good shit gets cancelled. Like Angeles, a take-off on Charlie's Angels that might as well have had a disclaimer before each show defying you to not become painfully erect while watching the three babes in action, or Solo en America, a Spanglish spin on One Day at a Time, with Laura Fabian as the world's hottest single mom raising two teenage daughters, one of whom was so incredibly ripe that every time I saw her bounce across the screen in a tight t-shirt I would spontaneously eja

...huh?

Well fuck you guys and your Uberevolution bullshit. I though we were discussing Telemundo here.

...

Hey, Razor? Send me, like, twenty bucks and I'll let ya call your new movment the Uberevolution.

Yeah, okay. This might trigger some improvement in the quality of a few users' posts, but the difference will be negligible. The format of Ubersite is not ideal for writers and humorists "trying to hone their craft." It invites pandemonium, because there is no acting leader or group of leaders. Even if it's possible in theory for Ubersite to be populated mostly by entertaining and intelligent people, something like that can't last long. The masses don't rule themselves. Ubersite is full of pointless, stupid crap because pointless, stupid crap is allowed; it is bedlam and will only continue to be so unless Bart makes fundamental changes. Your effort, while admirable, is futile, and that will be proven with time.

Submitted by Ingsoc (user info) at 2006-03-26 04:16:34 EST (#)

What made Ubersite good was its size. It wasn't overpopulated Back In The Day, which is becoming a problem as time goes on. As more people join, Razor's I-Wish-I-Could-Feed-My-Family-With-Words Gene Pool becomes diluted, and that spells trouble for the people in said group because their leisure is being threatened by OTHER people's leisure.

So what if other people's utilisation of Ubersite doesn't match your vision for a utopian Interweb society? It's the Interweb! Roll with it! Jesus!

Sorry for the frank ridicule, but the idea of a 'call to arms' strikes me as being frankly ridiculous.

I partly agree with you, I don't think ubersite needs to become a serious writer's forum, but what people need to do is put more effort into their posts, including shit posts. Be more creative, and don't be so lazy that you just think throwing up a picture of an emu or following a bandwagon is enough. I'd like to see more actual writings on here, but I would also like to see more things along the line of goatse and lemonparty, I mean why settle for ha ha rabbit when you can actually shock someone? I think if degreeless was unbanned everything would be better on ubersite, the balance between good and evil would be restored and there would no longer be this crappy lazy medium which most of uber is in.

On the one hand, I agree with you. This place used to be trial by fire, weaknesses in writing were ruthlessly seized upon and mocked. Doubts of parentage were expressed. Horrific descriptions of preferred methods of suicide/death were offered along with each -2.

Somewhere around or before user 10K, everyone started being obsessed with being "nice". My comments were no longer the norm, but made me stand out as an asshole, an abnormality.

Too many people trying to be "nice" here.

Stop encouraging the shit posters and they'll go away. These stupid fucking bandwagons really piss me off, I don't give a shit whats on your desktop. Nor do I care what the fuck is in your junk drawer (and as an aside, why are just about all of these fucking things started by the fat whores that make up most of the female contingent of ubersite?)

And then I realize on the other hand, it's just a website, and I don't give a shit.

There's nothing wrong with asking for what you want.

I also don't think there's anything wrong with some degree of intellectual and artistic elitism, provided that there is access for newcomers to join the elite. Elitism is a dirty word because of socioeconomic, geopolitical, and maybe even biological elitisms---none of which I see applying here with Uber because this place has always been strongly anarchic (no, not entirely..I can hear the arguments now.) I can't see anybody making a viable case that there isn't such access for Uberers. Even if somebody felt that her writing wouldn't be taken seriously after a career of shitposts, she could always create a new userID and write "seriously." I don't think that high IQ is required to become a celebrated 'serious' writer here.

I won't speak to general trends of Uber, UberHistories, Ubercons, emus, or any of that. I've been away too much to know or care about those things, but make no mistake...I care a helluva lot about the people and the writing here. In fact, the reason that it's hard now is because of how close I got, how involved I became in writing here as a means of escape during a bad time in my life, and how easily I've discovered it is for me to love the people behind the words. Writing of the nature that was common back in the day has the power to connect people across significant distances (both physical and otherwise), and, for my personality, the kind of shielded intimacy afforded by a community that shares stories is very attractive. It's also a little precarious.

Part of me would love to go back to the way I used to relate to this website, particularly now that my professional/artistic life is moving towards a community arts focus, this website seems almost like a weak prefigurement of what I'm ultimately interested in spending my energy on---making art with people who don't self-identify as artists. Still, I don't know how possible it is for me personally to return to how it was back in 2004.

Like Jared, the course of my life has been fundamentally altered by ideas and people that I would never have come to or met had I never stumbled upon this 'place.' I'm grateful for that, but maybe it was meant to be a stage. Maybe there were certain scenes to play out, a certain drama that had to unfold, and then the lights went dark and the set changed and now it's on to something else.

I can only speak for myself, but there are a lot of reasons why I stopped writing seriously and why I stopped writing regularly. My reasons have been personal. New users, lack of attention/celebrity status, and changes in the uberculture haven't made a lick of difference in my desire to write.

Maybe I'll give it a go again, but I'm not sure. I'm just not sure.

i'm not totally against this. Perhaps the exciting mention of my name (or at least my main ubersite name) in close proximity to the word 'shine' has clouded my judgement, but i agree to a limited extent.

i agree that it's worth remembering that ubersite is not merely a waste of time, an addictive indulgence. that some of us actually do have artistic pretentions and are tying to express ourselves thorugh writing, trying to shine, etc.

however, and i've said all this before, sometimes the originality, percerption and humour of so called 'shit posts' is much greater than that of so-called quality posts.

and, to be honest, and this is very hypocritical from someone whose posted many very longs posts, i don't really like reading long things online. unless they really capture me from the start, and i have plenty of time to spare. i'll happily lie on the couch with a book all day, but the computer is not that pleasant a thing to read from.

I'm from the essentailly the same Uber-era as you Razor. It isn't going to change. This is how Ubersite is going to evolve. Instead of evolving opposable thumbs, we're evolving an extra appendix. This site isn't going to get anything useful anytime soon. Its just going to get more useless crap.

It's what drew me to it, and whenever I go back and look at the stories, I feel inspired. That's why I don't post much, I don't want to put more drivel out there, and very rarely do I feel like writing something. I'm more of a musician anyways. But I have to say, this place needs to go back, and I will look forward to seeing what some people are going to do to try to take back the previous state of this site.

If you really want to change this, then you have to make the effort to hunt down the good posts and comment on them. What would be ideal is for there to be some sort of code that says "read this seriously, it's not emu crap" but that won't work so you actually have to hunt these posts down. You know, reward positive behavior and no matter how painful it is, do not comment on the emu posts. If everyone who cared would do that, then this wouldn't be an issue.

Although I am aware that I am generally ignored by the masses here, and for good reason - I'm a complete goddamn moron, I'll speak anyway.

Ubersite is really what you want it to be. It's a place for writers and slackers, egomaniacs and conspiracy theorists, trailer trash and the highly medicated. It truly is just what you want it to be. Sometimes you have to sift through posts to find ones you want to read. Oh no. Anything but that. I hate it when people act like it's such a terrible thing to actually have to put in the effort to browse.

At the same time, there's an argument that you have to browse too much. So what? Every time I go to music stores, I look through hundreds of CDs and albums, but I only come home with maybe 2 or 3. I don't come home and say "Ugh, I had to look through so many different artists and titles to get what I wanted, I'm never doing that again." Not at all, I sort of like the browsing. Scoffing at what I don't like, basking in what I do. I'm not so lazy that I can't spend 3 minutes looking for something I wanna read and think about, or laugh at. I mean, I am an incredibly lazy person, rivaling most lazy people in the entire region, but there's too much being made of browsing. It's just a few minutes more of your time. All this reminds me of jackasses who want to park closer to the store at any cost so they can save themselves an extra five steps.

In general, if you want to know what I think, and you probably don't, people think of the big picture of ubersite way too much.

For me, it's like this. You have more crappy posts than good. Oh well. It doesn't matter in the slightest. It doesn't mean ubersite sucks, it means the people contributing to ubersite suck. Move on, there's nothing to discuss. Find who you like, ignore who you don't. It's not like you're obligated to do anything with any posts here. You can always take a break, go for a smoke, maybe do a project, something that isn't worrying about the status and quality of ubersite.

I guess what I'm saying is posts like the one you wrote shouldn't need to happen. Hey, I don't think you're wrong. Ubersite has a lot of retarded stuff on it. I just think there's being too much made of it is all.

So what are you really annoyed about? That you n your pals are no longer the centre of attention, that you have to compete with more people for the spotlight, that's what it seems like.

Ok, I have just gone through almost 200 reviews of this and most of my opinions have been covered already, so I shall try to be brief.

1.
While I agree with you in your ideals, I believe Uber goes in cycles (sp?). I remember when I first arrived in this wasteland people were bemoaning how it was not as good as it once was. Maybe we are all guilty of looking for a utopian Uber that was ours at the time of sign up. If you are willing to take the time there is still quality out there, it just takes a little searching to find it. (Stagger Lee, Redskieslookfake come to mind as relative n00bs who can write)

2.
This post ties in exceptionally well with spooner's MH post about Publishing. If that gets off the ground it will in itself push people to attempt to write "quality" pieces if the possibility of being published lies at the end of it.

3.
I think BigMike's analogy of Uber was just about perfect. I fall into his camp in so much as I Uber on my own time. I try to post something of reasonable substance when I can and if I can't, then I try to do something entertaining in an original way or don't post at all.

4.
SPT as an idea, which Snark said somewhere below me, is not a bad idea, it is just misused. It gives people who are known for more "serious writing" to blow off steam. Unfortunately some people seem to see it as an excuse to post rubbish which is neither entertaining or original.

In conclusion, while you can never eliminate the bad posts, (I for one wouldn't want to get rid of them all), we could improve the overall quality of submissions on the site.

I think that sums it up.

I do like Bigmike's party analogy - that's pretty apropos...Jeremy's issue is that too many people are standing around in the kitchen, quietly sipping merlot, and when they stick their heads out into the living room, they see a bunch of kids yelling and doing kegstands and bodyshots of Jager, so they just go back into the kitchen, harrumphing about the youth of today.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Haha. It's true.

On one hand, I agree with you Razor....I miss 'the old days.....' and, yes, maybe
quality has dropped (depending on how one defines quality.) At the same time, there
were the same cliques, whiners, complainers, and consistant '-2'ers back then. They
just had different names than they do now. I dont suggest that we 'take back' Uber.
We just need to participate once again, read what we choose to read, rate what we choose
to rate, and not take all comments seriously.........

BigMike, as usual...the voice of reason...
----------
It always frightens me when I find myself agreeing with Shlongy. As Big said, I also view this place as a party. I drop in and wander around just to see what's cooking. I like to laugh, so I laugh at the truly funny stuff and I laugh at the nitwits too. Over in this corner is Method with his shirt off and flexing for the babes, all the while cracking wise. That souvlaki-eatin' bastid has a great sense of humor and never fails to crack me up.

Out in the dining room, BigMike is regaling everyone with sometimes amusing, sometimes heartfelt stories of parenting and the joys of family life. He's a good storyteller and I can relate.

Meanwhile, on the patio some nitwit that I never saw before is trying to shoot bottle rockets out of his asscheeks. I join the crowd, laughing and pointing, whilst telling him that he's a moron.

A visit to the kitchen reveals some guy (named Jeremy I think, yea, I've seen him around)talking about how he was the first to arrive and therefore this party should be conducted as he sees fit.
"You're all having too much fun!" He shrieks. "When we used to party here, we had serious conversations and comported ourselves! This is totally out of control and that's not the way I want it to be!"

Needless to say, I got out of there fast. That guy's a drag. I'm going back to the patio...

#1 You missed the point of my reply to wardy, ninja. I was showing a very new user with a low overall rating on a post that got blasted that I replied positively to because it made me laugh.

I haven't said that the immature shit doesn't belong. I have long ago learned that there's not much point in saying things don't belong on Ubersite.

What I've said is that quality shit needs to come back into vogue and be most of what is seen on Ubersite.

#2 I didn't think loki's post was shit. I thought that her post contained actual content that I was interested in. Foamhenge? Are you fucking kidding me? It's one of the corniest things I've ever seen, and I'm glad she showed it to me.

I stopped trying back at the end of 2004, when it became obvious to me that I really didn't deserve the praise I was getting. When I first signed up I wrote mainly from the heart, about things that were important to me, but it feels way too claustrophic here these days for me to carry on doing that - I'll just do my bit by trying to write more constructive reviews. I think I'm going to abandon ratings all together and just write comments.

What the fuck do you have against the Emu? He's never done anything to you.

Jeremy, honestly, we appreciate the sentiment, but it's not gonna change. I'm no more going to go back to writing amusing stories than Habeeb is going to stop his shitty mspaint drawings. I stopped doing so for a reason. It might last for a while, but it'll just go back to the disgusting high school drama cesspool that it's become. You might feel that I'm the biggest culprit around here, but I just really don't care anymore. If I'm going to be -2ed relentlessly by alters and sniveling retards who have nothing better to do, I'm not going to waste my breath. I've been attacked time and time again when I WAS just posting funny shit for no reason. I came here to write funny stories about my life and amuse people, and I still try to amuse people, although now I do it in a different way and tend to piss off alot more people. They ENJOY reading drama filled posts and nerdy internet fights, or else my posts wouldn't have 500 FUCKING REVIEWS. It's a shame, really, but that's how it is.

I seriously can't tell the difference between SPT and any other day.

You have my support, for what little it's worth.

Also, there have been people like Bigmike, and The Caes, and Circe, who have been consistant in there efforts. Gotta give em a nod for that.

Everyone sees uber a little differently. Hell, my view of it changes weekly, but I can't argue the difference in quality, or at least what I percieve as being quality.

I've told a few friends about this site. I've told them about Circe and Bickerstaff and others. I told them about how it was kind of cool because you have to sift through the shit to find the good stuff.

They came and found Rabbit and Rape. Then they left and never came back because some shit is just too nasty for most people to sift through. I can only think of one person in my immediate family who I would let know I was associated with this place.

It's kinda interesting how what gets a positive rating here now days is in some ways worse than the shit Koolmang or other's who've been run off the site used to put up.

Will this work?

Probably not but I've always liked taking the hard road.

Bigmike,

You are by far one of the coolest guys here. You've been around longer than I and I completely respect your opinion. but I think the party might be a little out of hand bro. I think they're punching holes in the walls.

A good shit post hits the spot once in awhile, don't get me wrong. SPT should live.

Plus, yeah, we're old.

Lol. Right on.

I'm surprised that Jeremy has no response to my party analogy. I can't be the only one that thinks like that.

------

I wrote a response to that, I don't know what happened to it.

I'm not going to duplicate everything I said, but here's the short version:

I referenced the part of Life, The Universe, and Everything where Arthur Dent learns how to fly only to get hit in the back by a party that is literally flying. What you wrote reminded me of it.

I'm fine with the analogy... only I think we've hit the part of the party where the drunk frat boys are throwing up and scaring the girls away, and it's time we dealt with them and got the party back to cool before the cops show up and everyone winds up arrested or pregnant.

In the last 6 months I've seen the decline you speak of. I try to post quality pieces and I've gotten some good (and appreciated) critiscm on them. You'll never rid Uber of the immature and the worthless posts because there is an audience for it. However, if you start posting good stuff again then other will too. Eventually you'll have your own click who use the sight for writing again...who set the bar high. Lead by example. I'm with you on improving the place by encouraging people to post pieces of quality again. I will, like always, try to post pieces that are good in hopes of improving my writing skill. If you give me constructive cristism, I will consider it. If you post something I read, I will try to rate accordingly.

What I am saying is that I agree with you and I am with you on this topic. However, I don't think it means we'll rid Uber of what you and I consider bad posts because "bad" is a point of view and in this case our point of view.

The good and the bad must exist together as there is no way to stop it. That doesn't mean this place has to be over run with crappy posts...there can be balance and wish there was.

Check out Stagger_Lee...that kid has talent.

And I agree with Badass on one point - simply telling a new user "-2Die" is, in my opinion, dumb. It does nothing to encourage them to become better writers.
