Within the past week, there were two posts about great guitarists, and a post about Metallica. I've said it before, and I'll say it again: Metallica sucks ass. But that's neither here nor there.
I had been meaning to respond to those guitarist posts with a list of my own, but I got busy. Which is a little unusual in itself, believe me. Anyhow, these are the guitarists who I feel are worthy of being posted. I didn't just base this on how awesome their solos are, or how fast they can play; if I did that, we'd all have to acknowledge the existance of John Petrucci from Dreamtheatre, which I'd rather not do. While I took into account their songwriting talent and influence, these are all skilled guitarists who should be on any list.

This list is quite respectable, although I'd move Gilmour to #3 and Jimi to #2 and make it the top 6.
Also, hmm Stevie Ray Vaughn and I hate to say it but Bon Jovi could play the guitar.

Harvest Moon is a great song.
And I like Pink Floyd better than any other band ever but Gilmour wasn't really that tremendous. He's good and I love his sound (because it's distinct) but he's not in the top 5 guitarists.

Richard Thompson should be on there too.

In some ways, I prefer your criteria of what makes a good guitarist. All their playing and writing, not just fast soloing. I'm probably biased because I don't like shredding.
On the other hand, lists attempting to quantify musical talent and so forth are a waste of time, because you just get those ridiculously circular arguments. For example, while you make good points about who your favourite players are, none of those five would make it into my top five.
It's a decent effort but this sort of thing is a waste of time.
