Now I know I can't be the only person to have made a stupid, stupid mistake. We've all been there, right? We've all been in that situation in the past...you know the one that you look back upon and cringe that you let yourself get treated like that.
You see anyone else in that situation and you want to tell him or her. You want to see that they don't fall for it but you can't. You're not allowed. It's not in the rulebook.
We all have to make our own relationship mistakes and I am no different from any of you. So I guess we all have a story to tell. I don't like talking about mine because every time I so much as THINK about it, my nose crinkles up like I've smelt something bad. My shoulders rise up in self-protection and the nausea of the memory of what a COMPLETE IDIOT I must have been to have taken it for so long. I mean, something like that just wouldn't happen to me now. I'd tell them to take a hike. I think. Or at least I hope.
So.
Do I tell you? Indeed, can I?
Alas, it appears I can't. I tried to start writing it, I swear I did... but the words won't come. I think the brain is very astute at blocking out the bad. I think my fathers death can fall into that box of No-Go Areas in my head.
I think the story would bore you at any rate. I'm not sure I can convey the mess I was in emotionally when I actually accepted he loved her more than me, but as long as she didn't want him - we were fine. How fucked up is that?
He got my confidence and played with it the way a cat plays with its food. He tore it up a bit and yes I know, I know... I let him. I don't know why. Maybe I was going through a vulnerable time in my life?
How stupid was I to not to stand up in that pub and tell him that I was someone's Number One or nothing at all. I didn't want to be second best but you know because she wasn't that interested in him... I took it laying down. Er... well... I took it anyway.
I wasn't to know that she's change her mind.
The mad thing is.... Is when it's all over and you've stared at the wall for some time, played the most depressing Pink Floyd stuff you can on the guitar, bitten every single nail down to the quick and lost most of your friends because you look scary when you're depressed.... when it's all over.. you emerge.
Like a butterfly. Goddamn it, I can't even type that wordIhatebutterflies urrghhhh.. Like a... okay what else emerges... like a sunrise. There you go.
And you couldn't give a toss.
In fact you can't even remember why. You sit there and think "God they weren't even that good LOOKING!... what was I thinking?" Shallow I know, but it helps.
Something that means the world to you today can mean so very little the next.
I used to hear 'our' song and howl...whether in the supermarket or out... I swear it didn't matter. I honestly couldn't help myself. I was a howling, snotty crybaby for ages. Well okay, it was only two months, but it felt like a decade.
If I heard that very same song now.... I guess I'd think of him probably still - but my thoughts would have altered from "oh why...why did he not love me?" to a far more sensible "oh why was I such an idiot with that guy whose ears were like a taxi with the doors left open".
I really hope he's happy with her. She saved me. I could have ended up with him and now the 'Love Is Blind' lights have stopped flashing like bloody beacons... I can fucking see.
He wasn't good enough for me anyway.

Hope to be back around soon as we get the Gulf back to specs. Almost all the evacuees I had are moved back to temp homes, 5 left here at my aunt's house in Mobile where i live weekdays to house 'em. Work all day rebuilding (I learned to be a carpenter, tho not a great one). I do write in what little time I have on my on project, but usually too sleepy for even that. Things are easing up finally, and I get more free time by the day, soon I'll be back in O. Beach and a full-fledged slacker again. Can't wait!! You never know how much slackdom means until it's taken away.
