Nothing stupid about this quote, it's what he thought and it's exactly what he did.
This is also why I've never been able to take Scientology seriously as a religion, or understand why anyone else could. It's never been anything other than a scam perpetrated by LRH. I don't know if the above quote is real or not, but it's well documented that LRH said similar things as this, many times, to John W. Campbell, and all his other old Sf writing cronies at Astounding Science Fiction Magazine back in the forties. All before he started the Scientology jive.
