Throughout the whole APW thing, nobody has contributed anything in the way of photography. Nobody that I remember anyway.
Photography has always been one of my hobbies, though recently a sorely neglected one.
Film, not digital. I don't even count one digital camera among the six that I own.
I'm old school like that. Do my own chemical mixing, my own processing, printing, developing...everything.
I've even included a photograph on one of my past posts that was taken using a box camera I built myself. You can see it here >> http://www.ubersite.com/m/79663 << if you're so inclined. Nothing special really, just some light experimentation to gauge how to determine shutter speed with the homemade camera.
So, that picture isn't art I guess, but when photography didn't have the added benefits of technology to make everybody's kid's birthday party pictures look like they were done by a professional, it was more of an art form. To me anyway.
But what do I know?
Maybe that's arrogance or close-mindedness on my part.
I still buy a good fourth of my music on vinyl.
I took four years of Latin.
LATIN. It's a dead language...

She has a lovely baby. What I like about this piece is that she is normal looking, and yet took interest in freaky lookin' people. You always wonder what the person looks like behind the camera.

She's extremelly beautiful. I just love that type of artist who wear their soul like clothing. You just look at their eyes and they're so vulnerable. That's what truly defines an artist.
Sadly, I might study arts in college right now, but I'll never look like that.

i prefer didgital more than film. maybe cause by the time i actually started using cameras films were outdated and id had some pretty bad experiences with the development of disposables, so i said fuck it and got myself a digital.

Nah, shouldn't be too hard to find Merlina. An original is out the roof expensive, so if you wanted that you should be ready to go to an auction with a wheelbarrow of cash. BUT, you could pick up a decent print for 20-30 dollars. That's about what I paid for the one I had and it's a really nice reproduction.

She was an interesting person, really odd life outlook and all, great perspective on American life.
I only used some more popular images from her work with freaks, but she did whole series on 'normal' America as well. Christmas decorated homes and socialites and street scenes...those, in the way she presented them, were more disturbing than any of these. Really interesting human.
Then she killed herself.

Her husbands name was Allan Arbus, I think. They ran a photography business together. What else he may have been involved in, I'm not sure.

I took a year and a half of photography in college. I loved doing B&W. I studied Arbus quite a bit along with Nan Golden.
Arbus was one of the very first photographers who wasn't afraid to explore interracial relationships. Interracial couples during her time were outcasts and pariahs.
Wasn't she married to the actor who played the psychologist Sydney Freedman on MASH?
