Maybe ETS can elaborate for me here, on whether or not Congress has passed any statutes regarding assaulting police officers and their respective legalities?
As far as I'm concerned, they didn't.
For those who don't give a fuck about bullshit U.S. politics and the latest flavor of the week (I envy you) or those Uberites not living in the U.S.; the incident in question involves Representative Cynthia Mckinney and her 'altercation' with Capitol police.
I really don't feel like summarizing this bullshit. But alas, I'll be brief.
The bitch goes to work, without her ID 'pin.' (Spare me the 'OMG, it was a pin... it didn't have her picture or any legitimate ID information on it... blah... blah... fucking blah) The police officer on duty, who, by the way, is in charge of SECURITY IN THE CAPITOL BUILDING, asked her to show some ID.
I've been told through CNN that this happens from time to time, and lawmakers will stop, turn around, and show some sort of ID accompanied by the response, "I'm a Senator or Representative."
Understandable, you do work there, every day.
But there are... over 500 of you fucking people.
Do you really think one police officer/security guard will remember everyone?
Anyways, I digress.
She continues to walk, oblivious to the attempts of the man to try and do his job, to keep the CAPITOL BUILDING SAFE FROM UNAUTHORIZED PEOPLE.
He then grabs her, turns her around, and asks her who she is. (PROBABLY BECAUSE HE'S IN CHARGE OF SECURITY IN THE BUILDING WHERE OUR GOVERNMENT MAKES LAWS).
Considering our President is always telling us to look out for fucking terrorists, that they can be everywhere, they're evil, blah, blah, fucking blah, I think it's OK for this guy to ask who people are who DON'T HAVE THE REQUIRED IDENTIFICATION.
She then says she was 'inappropriately touched,' and assaulted the police officer.
I want to make sure you read that. She assaulted a police officer.
She says because of her 'cornrows,' and skin color, she was inappropriately singled out, and to my disgust, was met with praise from the local black community.
Un. Fucking. Believable.
On CNN today apparently she apologized on the floor of Congress today, on the heels of a grand jury deliberation whether or not she should be indicted (for ASSAULTING A POLICE OFFICER).
This, coming from a candidate for public office, with one of many slogans including: "Cynthia Mckinney represents the backbone in politics. Leadership with courage and integrity."
Interesting.
The security guards at my school are predominately black. If I were to walk into my school, ignore their attempts at my lack of ID, and then punched one of them in the face, I doubt white people that I didn't know would clamor for my support as I shouted 'racism' from the rooftops. But that's because I wouldn't do that.
Because I'm not a fucking moron.

Constantly calling attention to race and insisting that you be treated differently or gentler or whatever is only going to (big fucking surprise) accentuate the fact that you are different. The guard in this case treated her like any other person (as if she were a person first and a black woman second), and she reacted as if he was a white man first and a person second.
The above paragraph may or may not be a little confusing.

Similar things happen over here in NZ. The Maoris get free stuff and just pull the 'black' card if something doesn't go away. Land claims because us whities 'stole' their land off them hundreds and hundreds of years ago. Give us back our muskets and blankets and we'll give you back your land.
They claim customary fishing rights, then over-fish. And poach things like Paua.
If I was Maori, I would have been given the option of about 10 times as many scholorships.
A higher percentage of Maoris are on welfare and benefits. Yet they still need more money. You know, for beer and stuff. They also have significantly worse health problems and obesity than us whities and yet they can't seem to understand that I don't want to pay 50% of my wages to them in tax because I fucking well earn my money while they sit there doing fuck all and whinging as well.

Maybe the -2 was a little harsh (yeah, yeah, not that ratings matter), mostly because I'm penalizing you for your choice of topic.
I do think that that this story is really unimportant in the grand scheme of thigns, and it bothers me to see people getting so worked up over it while they remain so complacent about issues that are so much more serious. And now, it seems like our president can get away with anything because, you know, "Bush bashing" has gone out of style (as if people ever did it to be "cool").

What's REALLY wrong with this country is that he can cry 9/11, not get arrested, and generally be welcomed by the conservative community for his valiant efforts.
Why focus on a congresswoman crying racism and getting away with assault, when our president is blatently compromising our national security and privacy? I'm not saying that I condone what has happened with McKinney, but there are much more serious problems here. It just seems like a waste of energy to be getting upset over something that will not have any sort of long-lasting effect on our future.

She doesn't even have cornrows anymore, she just changed her hairstyle, making it even easier for an officer to not recognize her.

while you kind of lost my support with your own 'backwards' statements at the end, it is great to see the sort of dialogue that this sort of situation creates. dialogue that spans across different races, classes, and even those in charge of looking at the strength of laws, and that very dialogue is what makes this country a sweet country to live in (not that other countries wouldn't be tight, i'm just saying this slaps ets' theories in the face about a restrictive government.)
