Both shows had their moments.
But recently, There was a new episode of South Park that seriously ripped on Family Guy.

They called it "poorly written", and made fun of the way that every joke is interchangable, and has nothing to do with the plot of any episode.
THEN they went on to make fun of the "toilet humor" in Family Guy.

This made me wonder... Whether it was satirical of their own show, or they seriously think that Family Guy has more toilet humor than South Park (which, may I note, featured the character Mr. Hanky.)

I, personally, do not think it is poorly written. South Park made a valid point about the interchangeable jokes, though.

Which makes me wonder whether that is really a bad thing. Does it matter that the jokes are interchangeable? As long as it makes people laugh, right?

It also makes me wonder what Family Guy is going to do in retaliation. Cause South Park deserves to be ripped on a little too.

Eh, I don't know. I just figured this would make for a shitty post, and what better way to post it then under SPT?

But seriously, who here thinks South Park is the better show?

Has it crossed anyones mind that on July 4 of 2001, South Park aired an episode called "Super Best Friends" which had a team of religious leaders (and Seaman)? Mohammed was in that episode, picture and all.

I really thought the point of the episode was to use Family Guy as kind of an allegory for how people have attacked South Park the way people attacked Family Guy in the episode.

having seen the ep last night, i will agree with the person that wrote this above me. i also think it wasa jab at tom cruise, again, because cartman goes on a crusade to stop an episode of family guy to further his own twisted beliefs much like cruise did to south park. mmmkay?

Both Family Guy and South Park have gone down the toilet recently, but FG can stil make me laugh a few times each episode while South Park is relying more and more on topical humor.

You really don't have very good comprehensive abilities do you?

That episode you refer to was a mockery of the way people react to SOUTH PARK. IE: the Scientology episode that was not allowed to repeat a couple weeks ago.

Ok, I know my post sucked, as I was just looking for opinions.

BUT if any of you actually bothered to read it...

I clearly stated that I think the "poop joke" references were SATIRICAL to their own show.

Meaning satire(mockery included).

Meaning the way people react to SOUTH PARK

I greatly appreciate feedback, but don't assume I'm a moron because YOU didn't bother to read the entire post.

The satire does not, however, change the fact that they were still making fun of Family Guy, which was blatently obvious. So maybe I'm not the one with poor "comprehensive" skills.

Fuckbag.

I enjoy both, but Family Guy is better in my mind. As a child of the 80's the constant 80's references really get me. I don't mind that many of the jokes are interchangeable and have nothing to do with the plot. That doesn't bother me at all. Actually, I think part of the reason the DVDs sell so well is because of that.

To me, Family Guy is a more absurd cartoon version of Seinfeld set up to look like the Honeymooners or All in the Family. The storyline is unimportant to the show, but they maintain that sitcom framework. I don't understand why it's such a big deal to South Park or the Simpsons, that the Family Guy is successful. All three are entertaining shows with loyal followings. There are plenty of shows on tv that would die to have the kind of popularity those 3 shows enjoy.

Yeah, if it's not fucking American Idol, they don't care. The only other shows they ever promote are 24 and House (but House is awesome.) Personally, I find the offensiveness of South Park to be more amusing than absurdity of Family Guy. Without Stewie, FG would be kinda boring.

South Park is better. WAY better. It actually has a point, whereas Family Guy episodes are a collection of often unrelated gags that are totally divorced from any kind of story or plot. It's just random cut-aways. Still funny, but nowhere near as cohesive or smart.

I think both shows are pretty funny. Sure Family Guy has its weaknesses but so does South Park. You could just as easily call South Park out for its preachiness, or formulaic plot structure, or that it's becoming so topical that a lot of the replay value will be lost in a few years. The show that's really starting to suck is The Simpsons.

I absolutely LOVED the episode of South Park when Cartman starts a Christain Rock band to get a platinum album.

Mainly for the Christian Rock rips, the horribly innapropriate lyrics (I wanna get on my knees and start pleasing Jesus. I wanna feel his slavation all over my face...), and for little gems like these...

Kyle: "Cartman, you don't even know anything about Christianity!"
Cartman: "I know enough to exploit it."

Right, but in those episodes, the boys are in school, at lunch and Chef is their friend who ALWAYS has something sexual to say. That's the joke. It's not random, it's Chef's character. Johnnie Cochran is a lawyer who uses sensational words to get his point across. Chewbacca is a jab at Cochran who was involved in that episodes story line. That's much different than saying "I've only been beaten once" then showing Peter in Tron.

Eh, I highly doubt Family Guy will rip on the Simpsons at all. The most they have done is maybe 2 references, but they were more making fun of the fans of the Simpsons.

Seth Macfarlane thinks Matt Groening is a great guy, and he probably won't rip on his show.

I personally don't like The Simpsons nearly as much as Family Guy. Basically just because I'm sick of seeing it on the air. Then again I'd probably hate any show that's been on the air for 100 years. Eventually, you run out of material.

So, in a Southpark episode, Jesus won't pop his head in and crack a joke? Or when the kids are in the lunch line, Chef won't crack a random sex joke?

I mean, in the episode where they satirize Johnny Cochran (and lawyers like him), they bring up Chewbacca living on Endor. Now they could've used any random thing not related to the story to make their point, so why pick Chewbacca? Because it's random and funny, that's why.

I hate South Park, and enjoy Family Guy, no matter how redundant/random/etc the show is. It's not a conscious choice, it's just my natural disposition.

I would almost argue that it's easier to satirize the current events of the day, than it is to crank out as many "random" jokes as Family Guy does.

And that's the standard that I've heard Paula Poundstone use before in reference to the old Marx Bros. movies: Jokes Per Minute. Family guy has one of the highest jokes/minute ratio, in large part because they do use flashbacks and such. But still.

Most current events create their own comedy, evidenced by the Daily Show. That shit basically writes itself. You point out a contradiction here, a double standard there, and voila! But it's not 'genius'.

I'm not really that impressed with the satire in South Park. Again, I always go, "Okay. I get it."

Chappelle's Show had some brilliant satire. So does the best sketch comedy show ever: Mr. Show. I think the satire works better for those shows because it's a series of 5 minute sketches (approx). So they don't harp on the same joke over and over.

EchoBoxing:

Your thinking is muddled. BOTH shows use randomness and shock value for jokes.

**Fair enough, but the shock that South Park uses is typically to serve a point relevent to the plot (in more recent seasons), not just for the sake of shocking people - that's just a bonus. I don't know what randomness you're referring to in South Park. Everything in an episode has something to do with the story. The randomness in Family Guy is for the sake of being random, and over time has become redundant (at least to me).

The flashbacks are certainly a convenient comedic device, but why the fuck do you care? Southpark has it's own conveniences. Is it funny or not? I can't believe you sit there and go, "Why would they drop a Fast Times at Ridgemont High joke in the middle of a dinner discussion?" Boo hoo.

**I care because I don't find it funny anymore. The show is for the audience, which includes me whether I find it funny or not. In my OPINION, dropping a Fast Times at Ridgemont High joke in the middle of a dinner discussion isn't as funny as an episode with a good plot and well rounded story. I'm not crying over it, I'm just stating my opinion -- it's not funny anymore.

Southpark at times is too slow with jokes, and they devote a whole episode to satirize one hobbyhorse topic of the day. After the first 5 minutes you're like, "OKAY, I get it. Is the whole show going to be the same joke over and over and over?" And most times it is.

**True, South Park has become preachier in recent years, but it has made for some brilliant episodes. "Douche and Turd", "Up the Down Steroid" and "Two Days Before The Day After Tomorrow" were all focused on one topic and I didn't think the episodes became stale after 5 minutes. I thought they got funnier as they went on. Again, it's an opinion. You're welcome to feel differently.

And it only takes 6 days to make an episode because the animation is ELEMENTARY. They know it is too, and that's been a part of the show since it came out. So I'm not dissing them for it, but don't act like that makes them better for it.

**I didn't say they were better for making episodes quickly. I said Family Guy wouldn't retaliate because they can't produce episodes fast enough.

The real question is whether Family Guy is better than the Simpsons. Southpark doesn't come close, but I'll give it the nod over American Dad.

**Family Guy isn't better than the Simpsons and neither is South Park. And I'll give anything the nod over American Dad.

I was thinking about this after seeing the show last night so +2 for that.

South Park is far more than toilet humor. The other part of that show was to show that the situation with the Danish cartoonists is ridiculous.

South Park is the greatest satirical show in existence. It is geniusly written and all of the jokes are based on the plot (besides the death of Kenny in every episode for ten years, but I believe that Trey Parker and Matt Stone have grown up considerably since they began writing).

Family Guy is hilarious, but most of the humor comes from the fact that it has no point. This is what South Park used to be, and there's nothing wrong with that. Family Guy isnt supposed to have a point; that's the point. Remember the scene where the court ruling comes down and the camera flashes a few different people...

"Oh no!"

"Oh no!"

"Oh no!"

"Oh no!"

Kool-Aid man crashes through the wall. "OOOOOHHH YEEAAAAH!!!"

There's no point to it at all, but it is comedic gold nonetheless.

I think gank was very much on point with his response.

I actually think that South Park is a much much better show now than it was when it first came on the air. I like the preachiness, but I wish they would tackle three issues per show instead of one, because it can get old... like having people from San Francisco smell their own farts a hundred times during an episode about smug progressive people to fill up time... we got it the first time guys. Do it three times to make the point for people who didn't, fine. A hundred times, blech.

South Park accusing FG of using shock value is so pot calling the kettle black that formulating a rational response is tricky.

Regardless of any of this, Family Guy is still a much more entertaining show. Yes, Family Guy uses flashbacks all the goddamn time as a comedic device. So what? It's hilarious.

Imagine if you said about "Whose Line Is It Anyway" that they're not really creating anything of lasting value they're just making crap up as they think of it. Well... DUH?!?

Last time I checked, comedy doesn't require a social message alongside it to be funny. Sure, sometimes it's nice, but sometimes it's overbearing and annoying.

I'd have to go with Family Guy as a much funnier show... South Park may be tackling issues of greater social significance, but you just can't top Stewie doing Shatner doing "Rocket Man".

EchoBoxing:

Your thinking is muddled. BOTH shows use randomness and shock value for jokes.

Southpark at times is too slow with jokes, and they devote a whole episode to satirize one hobbyhorse topic of the day. After the first 5 minutes you're like, "OKAY, I get it. Is the whole show going to be the same joke over and over and over?" And most times it is.

And it only takes 6 days to make an episode because the animation is ELEMENTARY. They know it is too, and that's been a part of the show since it came out. So I'm not dissing them for it, but don't act like that makes them better for it.

The real question is whether Family Guy is better than the Simpsons. Southpark doesn't come close, but I'll give it the nod over American Dad.

I, personally, do not think it is poorly written. South Park made a valid point about the interchangeable jokes, though.

**Family Guy is horribly written. The first 3 seasons were DECENT (not great) but since the return, it has been pure shit. The "flashbacks" have no relevence to the plot and they use randomness and shock value to get their laughs. South Park is consistently well written and is always good for a laugh. It doesn't depend on some random brain fart from the writers to get a laugh.

It also makes me wonder what Family Guy is going to do in retaliation. Cause South Park deserves to be ripped on a little too.

**Family Guy won't do anything in retaliation. It takes South Park 6 days to create a new episode. They do everything in house. By the time Family retaliates, no one will give a shit anymore. They can't produce episodes fast enough.

Eh, I don't know. I just figured this would make for a shitty post, and what better way to post it then under SPT?

**This is a shitty post because Family Guy in no way compares to South Park.

But seriously, who here thinks South Park is the better show?

**It isn't a question.

The sore on the underside of my leg is bleeding again.

South Park is better.

Family Guy tries too hard.

South Park is for the infantile. It stopped being even decent years ago.

Family Guy was cancelled and Fox was forced to bring it back. What does that tell you?

Eh, I think one of the main reasons South Park can run so long is because it is on Comedy Central.
Family Guy is stuck on Fox, who has some standards.
But, South Park has definately pushed the limits more frequently.
Like with that episode where they tested just how many times they said shit.

Eh, kind of a toss up.

Erm. I've seen about three full episodes of South Park in my whole life and I've NEVER seen Family Guy so my opinion probably doesn't count for much...but I'll throw a vote in for FG since I thought South Park was crap.

I would have to agree, Family Guy is better.
But every now and then, I think back to episodes of South Park like Chimpokomon, and Christain Rock. Those were classic. But, I guess Family Guy is more constant, on a hit-and miss basis.
