I've become somewhat restless lately and I'm considering moving. I'm 23 years old and I haven't seen enough of the world to settle down and own a house and just go to work everyday for 42 years. I am able to secure gainful employment in any one of these cities without too much trouble.

Canada:

Don't live anywhere in NY except the city or maybe Rochester. Everywhere else in upstate is pretty terrible: nothing to do, economically stagnant and has the crime that comes along with that.

I'm in an industry that's experiencing a shortage of qualified workers right now. The pay would be about that of any high-level tradesperson (plumber, electrician, etc.) I'm not sure if that's enough to get me into California, but overall I think I have the ability to generate a respectable income in any one of these cities.

And AJ, I'm going to teabag you. Sioux City is the greatest and I'll bring my Canadian-inity wherever I like.

Baltimore and DC really aren't as bad as everyone says. Sure they have crime but what major city doesnt? If you like sea food Baltimore will be great for you. Even if you don't the harbor is nice. DC is nice if you like museums and stuff, guess that's kinda obvious though. DC has a pretty decent concert scene too. Better then Batlimore's. I know because I've spent my entire life living almost exactly halfway between Baltimore and DC. And now I go to school in Baltimore.

I'll comment on the places I know/have lived in.

Boston MA - Great city. great people, great sports, great stuff to do, great culture, great history. I think this should be one of the top cities to move to. the city is 99.9999% people under the age of 30. everyone's very friendly. snows a bit in the winter, and it's cold, but not too bad. an hour to some great skiing. beautiful in the summer, less than an hour from some great beaches.

I really can't stress enough how fun and youthful and friendly the city of boston is. It's much smaller than NY, NY, so you're in less of the smallfish/bigpond situation. It's cleaner also.

Central MA - cheap real estate, lots of colleges, good wilderness, nature, etc, good skiing, semi-pro sports. not a lot to do outside of college type things like getting fucked the fuck up at a bar that has dollar beers.

Syracuse NY, upstate NY in general - One of the most beautiful places I've ever seen in the summertime. not too hot, lots of lakes, cheap real estate, great apples, great wine. big college town, cheap beer, hot willing women. it snows a FUCKLOAD in the winter. every day, lake effect snow. it's kind of depressing.

New Jersey, right outside of NYC - it's cool to be close to NYC...but new jersey is by far the worst place i've ever lived. the people are huge assholes for the most part, everyone thinks that they're tony soprano, it's waaaay over crowded, not particularly clean, and there's a lot of crime. real estate is ferociously expensive, unless you're 1.5+ hours away from the city. don't move here.

I couldn't wait to get the fuck outta that city. Of course I never lived in the nice parts.

The surrounding towns and cities are nice. But fuck working in the city. Between the asspounding for parking if you drive, 4% city tax, and car insurance high enough to make you want to rob a bank... I'd say stay away, but if you need any info on anything feel free to drop me a line... I promise not to sound too pessimistic.

Maryland in general is a fun state if you're not too particular about the weather, which changes every few minutes. You can drive down I95 and literally have snow one minute, then sun, then rain, then sleet. It's fun. Also we have little crabs on our driver's liscences(sp) now, mmmm tasty...

Baltimore isn't the only spot worth considering though,
Annapolis is gorgeous, and therefore expensive. The scenery is beautiful and like Baltimore you get waterfront property, but it's not as commercial as the harbour in Balt. The peeps are assholes though, BIG ASSHOLES.

Ellicott City has a beautiful historic district and a nice old-town feel. The river runs right through the city and it is conveiniently located between Baltimore County and the Wilderness of western Howard County.

PG county (and everything in it, half of Laurel, Montpelier, Muirkirk, Greenbelt, Beltsville, Hyattsville) it's all one big dangerous neighborhood. I lived there for two years, guy was shot in front of my building, roomates car was broken into/stolen twice

Denver is not a bad town, overall.

Kind of odd weather sometimes, like getting 4 different systems thru in one day and all, but all in all, very nice. The suburbs are somewhat cheap (north and west) and you're only about an hour away from the best skiing in North America.

I would highly reccomend Richmond,VA- not now, but later. Not a lot there for a 23 year old, not a real hugh party scene, but it's ridiculously beautiful, some great places to live, easy access to substantial employment in business, etc. It's very nice, and has some big city elements. Good family place, though I guess there's Tiki Bob's and the VCU/UofR college campus scenes... and the ITTech scene is supposed to be quite intense, though I was moving out before it would have interested me... yea, it's a good place

Seattle has very few hillbillies, but quite way too many assholes. Afterall, we are the birthplace of Starbucks.

Plenty of clubs, concerts and college chicks (UW is a breeding ground for hot chicks). Plus we have 3 major sports teams (Seahawks, Mariners and Sonics), a minor league hockey team (Seattle Thunderbirds) and UW sports.

Not a bad area to live, though the average price of a home in King County is over $400,000. Something to think about.

Oh, and the possibility of an earthquake or volcanic eruption.

I'm a Californian on "temp" assignment in Austin for last 10 months +. This is what I gots:

East Bay, CA- depending where you are: good public transportation to SF, great access to good music and great food and fun bars. Freaking expensive. (some hillbillies)

Sacramento, CA- (where my mail is sent and the bulk of my belongings reside)- not a bad medium city- getting better with respect to music, food and culture scenes. Great dive bars. Famous for being 1.5 hours from everything (Napa, San Francisco, Tahoe, etc). Not the best town for singles but a few of us seem to manage. Still affordable if you know where to look (try to stay in the downtown/midtown areas). Suburbs are a drag (more rednecks than hillbillies)

San Diego, CA- great to visit, beautiful weather, don't miss the Gas Lamp district but too $$ to live where the fun is. (well- you have Marines, many of which are former hillbillies)

San Francisco, CA- if you can afford it, do it. (not so many hillbillie)

Santa Clara, CA - unless you're a grad student or a professor, move along. It's a lovely town but I'd pick any of the four others before this. (not so many hillbillies- but you have "townies")

And then there is Austin. If it wasn't in Texas I'd consider staying here. Fantastic music scene, cool people, fun bars for all kinds of tastes, lots of outdoor activities but hot as hell in the summer. (yeah. some hillbillies)

East Bay? Are you retarded? I lived there for about five months over a summer and then some, and it was the biggest shit-hole... EVER. I mean, GREAT punk scene, cool people, East Bay Rats an' all, but you do NOT want to live there.

DC? Sure. If you like having your car stolen and getting shot at.

Boston? Great town if you can afford it. Somewhere in the suburbs maybe. But really, what can you afford?

Baltimore? See: DC.

The Colorado choices seemed reasonable enough. Boulder is supposed to be nice.

Don't live in Texas. Please. And Ohio has a bad rap as backwater, but Cleveland is a fun city.

+1 for the hell of it.

Though if I could live anywhere, I would live in minneapolis. No threat of natural disasters. Major sports teams. Large city for the midwest. Bands stop by when they are on nationwide tours. http://www.ci.minneapolis.mn.us/

naples is nice, kind of like the rich side of the state though.
orlando is cool if you can get away from the touristy side of it all.
Jacksonville is not that bad, it's a medium to small sized city, it's also got a few colleges.

I recommed tampa or the keys.

I'd vote Chicago, IL. Drive on down to the near south side, by the landfill. Lean out of your car window and yell "sup, my nigga!"

The locals love it when cheesy white boys do that.

Not many people know this, Dolson, but the universe gets crappier the closer you get to the centre. You'd have to threaten to cut off my nuts before I'd consider living in Toronto. Also, I owe the city about $400 in unpaid parking tickets and I'm afraid of what'll happen if I go back there.

Or maybe you're the stupid shit because you think that Baltimore and Washington are the only cities on this list with crime problems - and that there's not safer areas within those cities.

----------

All major cities have crime problems, but Baltimore and Washington are famous for it.

Reasons to live near Detroit:
It's actually not that bad.
You can drive South(!) to get to Canada.

Personally I love the Detroit area.

Either way, it's irrelevant. A stupid shit is a stupid shit.

Baltimore, MD is where I live currently.

Here's what you get; three catergories

Obnoxious art fag hippies (oddly the preffered crowd)
Dumbass college students
Dangerous thugs

So really very much like every other big city. Fell's point is nice, right at the harbour, a lot of bars meet the street right at the water, makes for nice nights. Also my tattoo/piercing shops are there.

Charlotte is a great town, used to live there myself. Depending on what part you live in, though, you may run into hillbillies seeing how Charlotte is the unofficial home of NASCAR.
