Here's the thing, and I am dead serious here... Would anyone be interested in doing a real life experiment?
I have some land that I could go live on right now.... Prime Kentucky woodlands with a creek, plenty of woods, fields that could be sown, etc. If anyone might be interested in seriously attempting to drop off the grid for a year, just to see if you're capable as a human being, you're welcome to come along.
I seriously might be doing this for real very soon. We'll have to build shelter, learn about the local edibles, invent ways of catching fish, fowl, squirrels, etc.
I am very serious here. There are no natural predators like bears there, so we won't be needing or bringing guns. This isn't David Koresh of anything, I'd just like to have an experience of a lifetime if nothing else. I've been reading some Thoreau lately, and the thought is seeming more and more appealing to me, particularly since I hate my job, I hate where I live, I hate the thought of contributing to the demise of a society I think has lost all direction and lost its roots, and, to quote, H.D.T. not when I come to die discover I have not lived.
The only thing holding me back right now is my lease on my apartment. I can't leave that for someone else to pay. As of February of 2007, I will be free of it. It is then I'm thinking of doing it.
If anyone's interested, or just wants to talk about the possibility, email me: electrictoothsyndrome.at.gmail.com """

I remember last fall Maxim magazine did a whole spread on how to live off the grid. Make your own electricity from a solar generator and all that good stuff.
I guess he was really into that issue.
---
yes he was. they also did an article recently about 9/11 and the conspiracy theories and a few days later, ETS did his 9/11 conspiracy post. go figure.
---------------------
You're all right. I get my life-advice from Maxim magazine. The secret's out. *rolls eyes*

No, but you get it from the Internet. That's not exactly better.

-------------------------------
Generally yeah, around here (Calgary and area - i.e. Kanaskis country) we generally have at least several SERIOUS maulings and a couple deaths a year.
===
Well, the context is a bit different in that area. You have a lot of human circulation in these parks and a pretty high population of grizzlies, which I think are largers and more agressive than black bears. With so much encounters, surely some hiker or cyclist or whatnot will inevitably bump on a mother with its cubs or a hungry bear that will stomp their tents. Despite that, it is still pretty rare.
The 5-6 times I encountered bears while tree planting, they ran away before I even noticed them. Of course, if you start running like a pussy, that's just an invitation to get eaten. The same thing happened for all my friends. Maybe they don't like french flesh. :-P
But come to think of it, with all his emo wrist slashing, ETS could attrack a lot of hungry bears into his sect.

Who eats milk and biscuits? Or do you mean cookies and just use the word biscuit like the English do?

I just fucking love his six years old vision of the wilderness.
That he will grow fields (fields of what...pine trees and dandelions?) just like that even though that requires shitloads of knowledge, work and EQUIPMENT . Or how he thinks that squirrels are a reliable food source, unless you eat the entire population. Or that bears are dangerous man-eating predators despite the fact that bears are generally pussies and that you have more chance of killing yourself while walking in the woods than being killed by one.
