What we have here is some illegal immigrants hired by Minutman staffing (nothing to do with the minuteman border group) to work at Wolverine Packing Co. They were told verbally and in writing that they would be fired if they skipped work to go to immigration rallies. They went to immigration rallies, got fired and now their union is investigating.
I really don't know who to hate more.
The people who entered the country illegally and thought that by breaking the law again by taking a job gives them a right to protest or have a voice in American politics. Who thought it was okay to skip work to go to a protest over a vote they have no fucking voice in.
The fuckers at minuteman who took advantage of the illegals or at best looked the other way when they must have known they were illegal.
Or the fucking union who is willing to stand up for the cause (I won't say rights, because illegals have no employment rights in the US) of people who are breaking the fucking law by working.
Why the fuck isn't the INS there? Why the fuck isn't the INS at these rallies carting these fucking beaners back home. They are flagrantly breaking the law. Why isn't INS going after minuteman staffing, going after the fucking union?
If I had an open container in a brown paper bag and was walking down the street keeping to myself and a cop stopped me for no reason, I would think it was fucked up. If I was running down the street screaming, slurring, and spilling beer everywhere I would think the cop was derelict in his duty if he didn't stop me. This is the same thing.
Immigrants' firing leads to protest
15 women lose jobs after attending rally; manager says they were warned
April 11, 2006
A manager at a Detroit meatpacking plant said Monday that 15 immigrant women were fired last month after attending a protest for immigrant rights. He said they had been told that they would be terminated if they missed work on the day of the protest.
But the workers and an activist working on their behalf said the women were given no such assurances. If the workers knew they would have been fired for attending the March 27 rally in Detroit, they never would have skipped the morning shift, said Elena Herrada, a Detroit activist who is trying to help the women get their jobs back.
Herrada and about 20 union officials went Monday to Wolverine Packing Co. offices on Rivard to inquire about what happened. They were given a letter signed by general manager Jay Bonahoom, explaining why the workers were terminated.
Some of the Wolverine workers were undocumented, Herrada and one of the workers said, and wanted to march in the Detroit rally to show their support for immigrant rights.
Bonahoom said that as far as Wolverine knows, the workers were documented, but an employment agency does the actual hiring. He said the workers had been told, "written and verbally," on the Friday before the protests that their attendance was mandatory on the day of the protest.
They were fired "for standing up for their rights," Herrada said.
The fired workers were natives of Mexico and many had worked at the plant for several years. Most have children and are worried about supporting their families, Herrada said.
Many were employed by Minuteman Staffing. So when Wolverine wanted to fire the workers, the meatpacking company told Minuteman to let go of the workers, he said. A manager with Minuteman said he couldn't comment on the case.
But the workers say they were treated wrongly.
"It was not fair,'" said Mercedes, a 31-year-old Detroit woman who attended the rally and was fired. "We went to fight for our rights." Mercedes is undocumented and asked that her last name not be used.
"It was really unfair of a company to do that," said Edith Castillo, head of the Detroit-based Latin Americans for Social and Economic Development

I am sure it is because they like America more, not the large distance they have to cross and the additional border they have to cross. """
That's what I said. But retro made it sound like yet another typically american "Nobody wants to go to Canada because you are poor, man!"

He may be right.
http://www.cnn.com/2006/WORLD/americas/04/12/human.smugglers/index.html
"WASHINGTON (CNN) -- As debate rages over securing the U.S. border with Mexico, authorities announced Wednesday that they had dismantled a human-smuggling ring that was running illegal immigrants into the United States through Canada.
The ring was responsible for importing dozens of Indian and Pakistani immigrants, according to U.S. and Canadian authorities."
Never heard of this before.

and indo ya know i if someone's coming from like peru or whatever what's another 1000 miles to get to canada when you've already gone like 7k on land? it probably really does have nothing to do with the added distance.
then again maybe you weren't being sarcastic. ahh fuck i give up.
---------------------------------------
What is the difference between the standard of living in Peru and Mexico? I guess probably not enough for them to stop. If Canada was south of the US they would have the immigration problem not us. as much as I hate our skidoo riding, maple syrup chugging, whale blubber chewing cousins, to someone from a third world country the differences are miniscule.

yeah a federal job is different from a "real" job. not saying it's not real work, but federal jobs have some of the best benefits ever especially in comparison to the workload. like postal workers, i mean if you're a full time postal worker, in the po not out and about, you start at like $14/hr but you get practically free everything attached. and that whole if you don't take your sick days you get paid for them is amazing compared to a non-gov job. the benefits to a fed job are insane compared to the same job in a private company. christ if i could find one i thought wouldn't make me go fucking nuts i'd hunt one down.

You are swarmed with illegal immigrants simply because of your geographical position.
We have illegal immigrants too. We're just not overwhelemed so we have more control over them since there is not as many. Some are tolerated but in many cases, they are deported right back from where they came from. A few particular cases tried to find asylum in churches and such but it usually doesn't last very long.

-------------------------
It would probably be pretty easy to do. Unfortunately when anyone suggests building a wall, or having real penalties for illegal border crossing people go nuts.
People don't understand how bad the problem is, and how good america is currently treating its illegals. If Canada or any European country was having the problems that the US has they would have already built a wall. Right now you have a buffer of the US and the winter protecting you from mexicans, as much as you hate american tourists I am guessing you would prefer them to beaners.

that's because they're still a drain on the economy. we have our own uneducated work force we don't need another country's added it to boot.
and from before: if they're working under the table, which is what a lot of unskilled manual labor does, they aren't paying into the system at all. the people that are most willing to hire illegals, like contractors and such, don't have them registered on a payroll because that way they can pay them whatever rate they want without having to give them any benefits or have any bitching or legal problems. and thanks to things like walk in clinics, where having an ssn is not required to get treated, they at least get free medical. they are not paying into the system and getting no rewards, they're mostly not paying and getting things that regular citizens have trouble getting.

and thank god for it, this would be a real mess if it were allowed to go unchecked
Personally, the phrase "jobs that Americans don't want to do" pisses me off.
It should be "jobs that Americans don't want to do for less than minimum wage".

What they need to do is run THROUGH the US into Canada. Pretend to be Canadian and THEN apply for citizenship. Nobody from Canada moves here.
They have gotta have a tiny line.
I know it takes about 7 years to get your citizenship, but the people that are waiting for that time to pass LEGALLY are working and living here. You don't even need to be a citizen to purchase a home, but you have something. A visa, alien status or DIPLOMATIC IMMUNITY like phuzzy, but you took the time to start or get some paperwork.
I guess that's what I don't get. My uncle married a girl from Armenia a few years ago. Her family all ended up moving here, she always said it was much harder to get the hell out of dodge than to get approval to stay here. When they got married, one of her sisters that still lives over there was not allowed to bring her children with her when she came for the wedding. It was like a guarantee for her country that she would come back.

true dat missfist.
a lot of people may say, "well, if somebody steals my social security number and works under it, aren't they paying into social security for me and when they cant file for it and i can, wont i get way more than if it was just me working?" and the answer is kind of yes. but the problem is, if they dont file tax returns and you owe money because they didn't, you gwet screwed.
the credit thing will def mess people up though. it is a good idea to get credit reports on the reg.

another problem (from a cnn article i read) is that illegals are stealing US SSN's from citizens and even using them to apply for credit and all. they steal it so they can get employment, but like someone said they don't file a tax return, so in some ways they're "paying" for being illegal. none of these people have glamorous jobs, but i'm sure it's a big chunk of change considering the sheer amt of illegals working in the US.
the problem is the gov't knows this is happening but there's nothing or little they can do to stop an illegal from using a citizen's SSN. which totally sucks! i suggest getting your credit report every quarter to make sure no one is using your credit at least.
the sad thing is, every illegal i've worked with in the restaurant business was a really hard worker. at least they're coming here to work, unlike a lot of able bodied people who collect welfare and soc sec income who don't really need it and are just milking the system.

When they aren't paid under the table they will use fake SSN's. If they are doing this however, I am sure they are claiming many dependents so they pay virtually nothing in federal taxes.
-------------
So part of the problem is the fact that employers want to pay them less and don't want to go through the trouble and expense of verifying that their employees are who who they say they are.
---------------------------------------
that is why I had the minuteman group as one of the people to hate. They facilitate stuff like this. The company is no longer responsible if the farm the labor out to a thrid party who then hires illegals.

well, they never file tax returns(like ETS) so our govt gets that money. AND, they pay into awesome things like social security and medicare and since they are illegal, they never file for these benefits so these programs and the people that use them, you and me and our families, reep the benefits from that. stimulating enough for me.
---------------------
Wait?? How do you pay taxes if you don't have a social security number? I mean how would the employers collect it.
They can't just go to the gov and say "Here's an extra $200,000 we found in the couch. Just put it into the medicare program.... like a donation... yeah a donation"
Excuse my ignorance, but I always thought that was part of the problem. Not paying into the system, then they get old and need assistance.
Someone feel free to educate this ol' broad

well, while a lot of them do have social security numbers, most of them are fake. while good enough to gain employment, the numbers are mostly bunk and so the people don't file for benefits when they need them. if you work under a ss number and pay taxes, and you never file a return to get some of it back, those taxes are basically a loan to the govt. yes a lot of them work under the table but those who dont are giving us money.

And fighting for "their rights"? They don't have any rights, they're illegal!!!! That's the gamble when you come to America illegally!
I wonder seriously if it would be feasible it just annex Mexico if they were willing to be annexed.

well, they never file tax returns(like ETS) so our govt gets that money.

Round 'em up, fingerprint 'em...
You realize that this would cost taxpayers MORE, don't you? You did think about that, right?
---------
It wouldn't take too long for the illegals to figure out that the purpose of their coming here illegally (the reason most of them espouse, anyway) is thwarted if they aren't making enough money to support their families back home. It's not like we'd have to house 10 million prisoners. Most would not return once they were deported if they were reasonably sure there wopuld be no purpose in it.
So yes, I thought about it. I decided I'd rather pay an extra $1000 or so a year in taxes to get lawbreaking illegals out of my country. That will leave more room for the hardworking legal aliens who are willing to work honestly for the benefits that being an American provides.

>>You do have a big fence between you and Mexico though. It sounds just a little concentration camp. Although we have the English Channel which acts in a similar capacity. I'd like to think we welcome as many people as we can. If you were a Mexican, would you head for the border?
---------------
We don't have a fence over the entire border, not even a significant stretch of it. Isn't the EU building a wall in the west, I know they were discussing it.
Arnold came here legally.
It is all well and good to say you like it when peole come to your country and that illegals should be assimilated, but it is just ridiculous. What about the people sitting in their home country trying to come to the US the right way, they get screwed. In 1984 we gave illegals amnesty and what happened? They flooded the border, the only way to stop it is to let them know they aren't welcome, and they will never become citizens if they sneak across.

I don't think they should be rallying for anything. My parents didn't sneak over here illegally, they went through the proper channels. It further infuriates me that people say that they do the jobs that no one else wants to do, but they send all their fucking money back home to Mexico, so their contributions dont even get circulated here or stimulate our economy in any way.

i hear you though about how they could go through the proper channels. your family did, but your best friends ancestors might have not. which means that your best friend might not be there to hold your hand when you are getting waxed if they hadn't sbnuck in on a boat or something.
what i find funny about the whole thing is that over the weekend i was practicing my portuguese and spanish by talking to the kitchen guys at my part time job, no i'm not a dishwasher, and i asked them about the whole immigration debate, and they had no clue what it was about.

But we are not all illegal immigrants.
I am for immigration. The US has a very pro immigration policy.
The people that come here illegally are breaking the law.

Has the english parliament recognised this yet? Possibly so. What if a huge influx of hispanic people settle in the South, then decide that taxes are too high and break off FORMING A NEW AND JUST COUNTRY WHERE ALL CAN BE FREE AND HAVE A GUN?!!
----------
I think the english recognized the US a while back.
>>As the New American States will recognise the Hispanic states in 2050. ;)
How could the taxes be too high if they don't pay them? Why would they start their own govt when ours takes care of them?
>>The British Govt looked after America. At the time we were the premier force in the world. By miles. Every other nation rolled over when we said so. Why did the colonists leave?
YOu do realize that in porportion to our population the illigal immigrant problem in the US JUST FROM MEXICANS is more than 20x worse than the TOTAL illegal immigrant problem in the UK?
>>I don't see it as a 'problem' per se. I would like to see immigrants be naturalised and adapt the local cultures and language as opposed to living in ghettos. But i'm generally very pleased when people choose to move to my country. How do you know how many illegal immigrants are entering the country? I'll also say that Schwarzenegger is an immigrant and California just elected him as their best representative.
A lot of people from europe think Americans are being xenophobic and cruel to immigrants, even though we bend over backwards to coddle people that are breaking the law.

Red, apparently Hadrian's Wall used to be a little more impressive to look at and much better as an effective barrier.
>>It still had regular gate houses which were manned by two men. No biggie. It was a bit taller in some places I'll grant you.
It's the red-socked, bearded, Kendal mint cake-eating ramblers that have trampled it down over the years.
>>I want to go kick some roman wall now.
And it was built purely because the Romans couldn't handle the sight of ginger pubes being flashed from 'neath a kilt. And who can blame them?
>>Very fair point.

Illegals have no rights as Americans. How is that difficult to understand?
Hadrian's Wall was never built to keep out armies. It was built to stop waves of uneducated, lawless Scots from rampaging Roman-owned England. You yanks need to build the same god damn thing. A giant wall across the border of the nation.
---
It was a way of creating a visible boundary to let the tribes know where they could rampage up to. Have you seen Hadrian's wall? It would not stop four blokes with a donkey. The Romans were invited into several areas to act as peacekeepers, and when you consider how many crossing points the wall has, and how lightly manned it was, the idea of it being anything except a political and geographical border is lunacy. It was the line in the sand and nothing more.

Round 'em up, fingerprint 'em, DNA profile 'em, send 'em home. If they get caught here again, they get to be prisoners, doing the same work they would normally do - all the jobs that they say we non-illegals and actual citizens won't do. As prisoners, they make 25 cents an hour (not enough to support a family back home), and get three meals, an education (in English) and a place to sleep during their 10 year sentence. Caught here a third time - same deal but they work until they die.
You realize that this would cost taxpayers MORE, don't you? You did think about that, right?
----------------------------
Not really.
Right now US prisons are so expensive because of all the bullshit we have to give prisoners, and they don't have to work. If they had to work to be fed and clothed, we could make money off of them. But this is a little tough. If they get caught again they should do a short jail sentence and sent across the border with nothing but the clothes on their back, whatever goods, money food they had take it from them.

I'm pissed that this is even an issue. 11 million illegals in America sounds to me like something is fucked up, seriously fucked up. I agree with you wholeheartedly about the INS not making a stand here. And a union...a fucking union, are you kidding me? A meat packing union? An illegal immigrant meat packing union? We should be given marshall law for aliens and be able to shoot them on the spot. Or we can have illegal culling....bhwahahhahahaha

For me it was a toss up between New Orleans and vegas being more fun, mainly because of this. I might go to vegas and never see the sunlight, go straight from casino to cab to bar to strip club and never really be outside, but I like the fact that I could without finishing my drink. Now that New Orleans has been smited, vegas wins hands down.
