In those two South Park episodes, they even made fun of themselves and basically pointed out that for some people, Family Guy is a better show. (Kyle says he likes Family Guy because "they don't get all preachy").
But you also say that South Park itself uses a formula, just like Family Guy, and you're right. The problem with Family Guy's formula is that it isn't funny.
The other problem I see with the argument is saying "get off your fucking high horses and go back to writing funny episodes", and you also mention the first episode of the show. Are you trying to say that South Park was funnier during the earlier episodes when it was made up entirely of crude humor? The first episode is one of the least funny I've seen.

South Park is way better than Family Guy. South Park puts things in their episodes that are actually going on, which is why its so good. You have to know what is going on in the world to think its funny. Matt and Trey just step back from the situations and are able to laugh at them and make us laugh at them. And i'm tired of people saying that south park is has too much toilet humor and religious humor, it's not like its the only show thats done it. Family Guy used to be okay but it has turned into a show with no point and way too many cutaways. It would be better if it were actually made by manatees. Plus its just a copy of the simpsons(which has also lost its flare);the dumb, fat dad (and his two friends), the smart daughter, the dunb son, the uptight mom, a dog, and the little baby. To all you who think Family Guy is the best are too reliant on the same type of humor from the simpsons and family guy. South Park is new and it has purpose which is why anyone with at least seven working brain cells and is socially acceptable would like it more.
------------------------
i don't know why i'm responding to this, but i am.
for starters, to compare the simpsons and family guy simply because their family structures are the similar is completely ascnine. are the fresh prince of bel-air and the cosby show the same show? of course not.
next, peter hangs out with three good friends, not two. one of which is handicapped. there goes that one.
also, i'd hardly call 'loose lois' uptight. if anything she's, well, loose. but keep trying, you're bound to get one.
meg is smart? must've missed that episode. i just thought she was ugly.
whoa! chris and bart are both dumb sons! WHERE HAS ALL THE ORIGINALITY GONE!!!!!!! not like any other sitcom has done that before.
a dog and a baby are also very close similarities, except for the fact that the dog and baby in the simpsons don't talk and don't account for 90% of their show's material. when was the last time maggie and santa's little helper had an entire episode devoted solely to their pseudo-intellectual relationship? never?
wow, i can't wait to see your other interpretations of pop culture, i'm sure they'll be as provacative and spot on as this one. did you make a venn diagram? i bet you did...

Besides something doesn't have to be the best thing ever written to get copied. It can be a combination of moderately funny, plus timely, topical, whatever. This is not the funniest thing I've ever read by a long shot, but it IS funny, and it's about two immensely popular shows, therefore, it could theoretically generate enough interest to be copied.

People forget, South Park was just as "pointless and random" as Family Guy when they started out. Then, Matt & Trey decided to get a stick up their ass when the events of the nation made it seem like politics were very important, right around the 2000 election.
You remember the old South Park, and then do you remember "Orgasmo" or "BASEketball"? Yeah, that was them in the 1990s. Then it went to "That's My Bush" (or whatever that stupid sitcom was called), the new preachy South Park, Team America, and beyond.
I guess what I'm saying is, give Family Guy some time, at least as much as South Park has had now, to evolve, before you go dumping on them.
BTW, if this isn't purposeful hitwhoring - what with the filename, and the submission of it to other humor websites - then I don't know what is. You were worried, weren't you Razor, that maybe someone would get to this first. You probably stayed up all night doing it.

south park isn't some genius show...it's just a show. it doesn't save the world or demonstrate fascinating social commentary.
here's how they do an episode.
"ok, trey...let's pick a topic."
"how about global warming?"
"naw."
"how about the war in iraq?"
"no way, i'm getting sick of saying derka, derka"
"i know, we'll do one on family guy."
"brilliant! but...how many dick and fart jokes can we work into it?"
"we'll just have cartman grab his balls and shit his pants"

No, you're right... South Park has a point... but I'm sick of South Park having a point. It's starting to feel like Tom Cruise yelling at Matt Lauer about psychology... I like the show, but they're no more qualified to tell us how we should feel about every issue than the very people (i.e. George Clooney) that they make fun of for the same things.
--------------------------
When in the fuck are people gonna realize that either we're ALL qualified to comment on social issues, or NONE OF US are.

I can't +2 this. South Park is more than just a comedy cartoon, it is political and social satire at its absolute finest. South Park is the Gulliver's Travels of our time and will have a place in our history books. Family Guy is just an encrusted piece of shit that has ran out of 5-second quips.
I think this has less to do with the battle between the genius of South Park and the crappiness of Family Guy, and more to do with the fact that you resent them for making fun of Jews.
Doncha, Jew!

people expect animation to grow...it can't. eventually the well runs dry.
i'd say the simpsons crapped out years ago. it was after the 15th trip to wherever. probably when the simpsons went to australia
south park rrelies on gross out humor to keep it interesting. after that gay sex slave episode, i realized they were running out of ideas. watch out for a two-parter on recto-vaginal fistulas. that should be HILARIOUS!
as for family guy...since it relies on the pop culture references, it will get repetative. i don't think it has yet (at least for me) but it's bound to happen.
people need to stop expecting fantasia everytime they tivo a 20 minute cartoon.

I dunno. No negative because it obviously took some work, but I don't know that I agree with the cartoon and I DEFINITELY don't like the presentation of your argument.
You get what people are saying, right? That it's kind of douchey to get all up on a high horse about it? I think the problem's mostly how you address it.
Which might just be a result of how you speak. I am hard to read online, too, because of my syntax and word choice.

Which argument don't you like the presentation of? The intellectual property argument? I didn't go out of my way to make a big deal about not taking my stuff... I just changed the file name so that anyone who saved the file would see my request.
I made that request as unobtrusive as possible, and it's only a topic of conversation due to the fact that people are attacking me for making the request of someone not stealing my work.

You get what people are saying, right? That it's kind of douchey to get all up on a high horse about it? I think the problem's mostly how you address it.
Which might just be a result of how you speak. I am hard to read online, too, because of my syntax and word choice.

Rag on me as you will for asserting my intellectual property rights... it's absolutely my perogative to assert them and I will continue to do so.
IP is a major problem in this day and age... look no farther than ebaumsworld, which is a website that has made people rich stealing the work of others on a regular basis.
I can and will continue to excercise my rights whenever and however I see fit, and there are lots of others here who feel the same.
As far as someone who mentioned my use of the Stewie character, it's called a derivative work. Look it up before you open your mouth and look like a fucking fool.

If anyone actually cared about WHO created something, they would take the 5 minutes they'd need to actually find out who it was.
When this picture turns up in your inbox from some other nerd-fucker who claims that they created it, THEN you can get all pissy and throw a tantrum.
Until then, you should just be grateful that some loser gave enough of a fuck about your crap humour to post it on their obviously inferior website.
That being said, I'm going to put this picture on my own website and claim to have created it myself. When I finish cleaning the AIDS out of my ass from the reaming I receive for it being so dull and uninteresting, I'll send you the link so you can sue me for the 75 cents and 4 cigarettes that I have to my name.

It's really offensive when someone takes the result of your labor and tries to show it off to the world as their own material. If someone wants to post it all over the web and say "By Razor" or "By Jeremy" or even "I got this from ubersite.com" it's not a big deal, but taking it and claiming it is their own material is the worst kind of thievery. If people won't take it down, you have to threaten to resort to legal action and, in worst case scenarios, actually do it.
===============
Why do you even care? If you come up with some catchphrase, or a word to describe a reaction, for example, bosh, and other people start using it, would you flip out and demand that every time they use it they should say "oh, by the way, I got that from Jeremy"
What the fuck is wrong with you? I blame people like you for the concept of material posessions.

after seeing all the hubbub about the file name, i decided to see the name for myself. you are a tool.

Yeah I really don't care if you guys think I'm a tool for naming the file that. The thing is, I have had to spend a considerable amount of time asking people who have stolen my work without crediting me to take it down from their sites, or credit me.

I know for a fact that certain users who have suffered from this problem have actually gone so far as to register their work with the copyright office, although it's already copyrighted via the first use clause of copyright laws.
The only way I know of to catch people doing it is to google blocks of text, which is impossible with a picture like this. Hence, me making a polite request to credit me if the work is copied. I suppose you might think it's arrogance to assume someone might copy my work if you didn't realize that it's something I have had to deal with on a regular basis.
I'm not the only one - Ubersite's popularity has lead to this... I know for a fact I've helped get Jonukah, Spooner, JMG, and Tom's work taken down from websites that have ganked them without permission.
So, in conclusion, blow me.

The fact that you spend "a considerable amount of time" crusing the intarweb looking for your original work and crusading for your just credit is both laughable and pathetic.
Secondly, who the fuck has wasted time registering anything from this website with a copyright office?
I can see one of squattail's more infamous posts coming across someone's desk.
Spend some of (you obviosly too much) time writing either an academic or fictional article, paper, or otherwise that is worth publishing and copywrighting. Do you think your children will be impressed by anything you've done on a website that celebrates rape jokes and shit post thursday?
Copyrighting original work for the sake of protecting original work is, and always will be nothing more than an ego trip.

i don't think South Park was necessarily attacking Family Guy. They used them as a representation of themselves, since they pretty much have the same audience.
I saw all of the insults directed at them as what the people who compare the two shows and are pro-south park say about Family Guy.
I imagine Matt and Trey absolutely love Family Guy, and that episode could be viewed as a tribute.

I like the show, but they're no more qualified to tell us how we should feel about every issue than the very people (i.e. George Clooney) that they make fun of for the same things.

I don't agree that they are always telling people what to feel, a lot of time they are just mocking an issue, or at least both sides of an issue.

The post is great. Stewie kicks so much ass, his foot is getting sore.
The thing is, I'm a huge fan of South Park, particularly because of their political satire. I didn't like it back when the shows were only about Cartman geting stuff up his ass.
When I wath Family Guy, I laugh out loud. When I wath South Park, I don't laugh out loud, but appreciated it nonetheless, it's a different kind of humor. But that's obvious, moving on...
Here in Qc, we live a humor crisis. Back in the 80s, we used to have political satire humor shows, but we don't have them anymore. Why? There are various reasons, mainly because our industry is getting more and more monopolized by the big companies, but that's not the point.
What I'm trying (struggling) to say is, you guys should feel lucky you can have such shows. We've been complaining here for the last couple of years about the lack of political content in our humoristic scene, and you, you complain about having too much.
So, bottom line, can we get South Park, pleeeeeaaaaase? *puppy eyes*

Oh yeah, another quick point.
During the entire two part episode they just aired, I think I actually laughed out loud twice; once was the big wheel chase through the desert and again during the whole manatee scene. The chase was pretty funny, if slightly cliched, but it also had NOTHING AT ALL to do with the over-arching narrative. And the manatee part was just as random as FG, even though it proved the slightest of points. In trying to attack FG they completely forgot to make their own show funny.

I completely agree with you here. But the bottom, BOTTOM line is that both shows can be funny while still being different. I don't understand people who argue that Family Guy is stupid because its non-linear joke oriented, or that South Park is stupid because its too political. It doesn't matter how these shows are presented and in what format, as long as they make you laugh. I agree that Family Guy has lost a bit of creativity as far as storytelling is involved, just as much as I agree that South Park has become nothing but a repetitive political satire show in every episode. But that doesn't mean I don't still laugh.
Otherwise, sweet post.

Don't forget that we're living in an age when the president can do whatever he likes and anyone who criticizes him for it is accused of hating America and aiding terrorists.

good post.
i think both shows ahve lost their way. family guy has gone overboard with the "lets see how long we can carry this joke for... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... .. ... ... ........ ... ... ... ... etc" and south park has gone overboard with the not funnyness.
i missed the simpsons ;last week. :(

Great post.
Family Guy has lost some of it's greatness. Like the guy below me said.

Is it wrong I agree with them, though? I mean I always loved Family Guy's cutaways, but they've multiplied since the show came back. They used to be used only so often, but now they're used way too goddamn much. It was one of my favorite shows but somewhere along the line the 80's references and flashbacks just stopped being funny. They beat it into the ground.
