Sometimes, I have found, all it takes is a simple, random image to snap things back into balance.
Today, I saw such a thing.
It was hot. The muggy, sweltering kind of hot you get after a rain where the air is so thick it's tough to breathe. I could feel the heat coming up from between my body and ballistic vest, the sweat running down my sides as I manuvered through shitty stop and go traffic, trying to get to my second job on time.
My mind was a whirlwind of thought as I avoided the Sunday drivers and the obviously mentally impared who had all simultaneously thought it would be a "great day for a drive."
Did I have enough staff for tommorrow? What about the upcoming detail on the 20th? Did I take enough money out of the ATM? I hate that damn song on the radio. What IS that asshole doing stopping in the middle of the lane??!! The minutuia came and went. Flotsam and jetsam of yet another stressful day, blending seamlessly into a blur marked only by the hands of the clock.
Then I saw it. Stopped at a stoplight behind Methusalah in a Mercury, I saw her.
It was a little girl, about 8 years old, wearing a sundress and squatting down the way only little kids can do. She was oblivious to the traffic going by, engrossed in her task at hand.
She was picking dandelions on the verge of the roadway and smiling as big as tomorrow, gathering a huge handful of the tufty golden flowers. I watched her get up and skip towards a house, with her weedy bouquet firmly clutched in her small fist, ready to give this gift to someone inside.
Then the light changed and I drove away, but the simple sight of a kid picking "flowers" had cleared my mind. The bullshit and repetition of everyday life was gone for a brief instant.
The delicate beauty and grace of this gave me a flash of what really is truly important in life. That even when life is crappy at best, the unsolicited act of kindness from a child can pull things back into focus.
I wish those dandelions had been for me, but I guess in a way, they already were.

Option 2 would have been to jerk off on her face while she was asleep.

I hate the last line. It's so good, but I find it derivative. It' such a good line, I hate that I didn't like it.

1000 years ago when I was in college this girl whose name I cannot remember gave me a flower. It was a daffodil, sold during the Cancer Awareness week donate-a-thon. She said it was to make me happy. It did. I carried it to my next class, where I saw a girl who looked a bit sad. I gave the flower to her, and said it had already made me happy so perhaps it could do the same for her.
Our 15th anniversary is in three months.

I'd once tried to write something along those lines, but yours would have dominated it

Awww. Seeing little kids always tends to do it for me, too.
Er..not "do it", but you know..give me perspective. Yeah.
