Anna is a goddess. A fox, a beau, a Venus with arms. She's Aphrodite, she's Carmen Electra, she's May. You know her, everyone knows an Anna, she's your best mate's sister or the girl at the store or whatever she'll be in your life somewhere - a walking talking Kilimanjaro: stunning but inaccessible, and definitely insurmountable.
My Anna has unknowingly dominated my life for the past three years, she alone makes this dump of a school worth the monotony. She sits opposite me in double Maths on a Friday afternoon and her presence is the only thing that keeps me there.
By God I'm besotted, I could watch her all day. I notice everything, from the way she leans back into the cheap moulded plastic of the chair to the way strands of her fringe rest on her eye-lashes and stir when she blinks; the exact angle at which her long legs are crossed, the way her white teeth indent her lips when she falters on a problem, the way she crinkles her nose slightly when she dabs the buttons of her calculator with the end of her pencil, the shape of the tiny bead of perspiration that has formed above the crucifix on the triangle of flesh the open shirt has revealed to me. For the millionth time I silently praise the stuffy classroom and breath hard.
She hears me but doesn't look up or acknowledge my presence in any way. I expected this. I do not speak to Anna much round school, even when I detour to have a chance of passing her in a corridor. Occasionally I am granted existence when she asks me for an answer or a ruler, but that is all I need. I could handle anything except that voice.
Anna has stopped moving, her pen poised an inch above the page and the slightest frown can just be seen crossing her forehead. I snap out my reverie and swallow. Her head begins to rise slowly, in the most clichéd imaginable manner.
Her large doe eyes lock on to mine
I'm short of breath with panic, everything I do from now must be cool and calm
She inhales and her lips part. The tongue begins to move, this could be anything
"Sir I don't understand this integration"
