I always feel the need to put this disclaimer up.

WARNING: Hockey Post!

Now that that is out of the way on with the show. I thought I'd have some fun and put aI'm better than you type of contest/pool going for these upcoming NHL Playoffs.

It's simple give me your predictions of who will beat who in how many games for the first round. For whoever gets their picks in by 6:59est today will be eligible for round two. I will make a post the day after round 1 and you will predict round two and so forth.

Point system:
5 points for predicting the right team.
Bonus 2 points for picking the right amount of games in each series.

Ex: Det over Edm in 4
If Det wins in 5, you get 5 points, if they win in 4 games you get 7 and if Edm wins you get 0. simple, simple.

Plus: Predict your Stanley cup winner now and earn ten extra points + seeding at the end of the contest.

Ex:
Stanley cup winner Detroit will get you 11 bonus points if they win because (10 points + 1 seed = 11points)

Stanley Cup Winner Edmonton will get you 18 bonus points if they win because (10 points + 8 seed = 18 points)

It's all very simple.

Now for ess-arr's predictions with commentary.

Ottawa Sens vs. Tampa Bay Lightning
I really like Ottawa this year, but they have questions in goal, emery has been playing decent but is he who the Sens want in nets? Don't count out Tampa Bay's Playoff experience as defending champs I would not be surprised if I saw an upset. Yet I'm going with the Sens in 7.

Montreal Canadiens vs. Carolina Hurricanes
All signs point to a 4 game sweep by the Hurricanes. With them out scoring the Habs 25-9 during the four games they played this year. Theodore played in three of those games, Erik Cole is out and Andrei Markov only played in one of those contests. To go along with that Kovalev has never lost in the first round and The Habs will not lose a game at home because with 21, 273 each game, the Canadiens have the loudest most energetic crowd in the NHL, especially come Playoff time. Habs in 7.
Philly vs. Buffalo
I really don't know about this series I think it could go either way. My prediction is simple: Forsberg. He will make the difference. Philly in 7.

New Jersey vs. NY Rangers
I think that the Devils bubble is about to burst. They won eleven in a row to finish the season, but it could only go for so long. They are playing a Pissed off Jagr that lost the Art Ross and Maurice Richard trophy in three days and do not under estimate NY goaltending with Olympic Gold medalist Lundqvist. I'm hesitant that Brodeur may win the Devils the series but...Rangers in 6.

Detroit vs Edmonton
Detroit is just too strong, I'll give Edmonton a game for Canadian influence on playoff hockey. Detroit in 5.

San Jose vs. Nashville
I really liked Nashville's playoff chances before Vokoun went down. The Sharks have an untested playoff goalie in Toskala but I believe it will be their dynamic duo of Thornton and Cheechoo that will carry them to round 2. San Jose in 6.

Anaheim vs. Calgary
This is my match-up of the first round. This series should be awesome. I see periods and periods of extra overtime and definitely a game seven. Kipper could win it for the Flames but I think the Ducks offense is far better than Calgary's meager attack and will take it to the Flames goalie. Ducks in 7.

Colorado vs. Dallas
I just don't like Colorado chances with Theodore or Budaj. Dallas in 4.

Well those are my picks what do you got?
Enjoy the Playoffs!

The Flyers embarrassed themselves. Number one most important thing they have to do to compete next season is get rid of Bobby Clarke. He has been destroying this team for nearly a decade. In the "new" NHL that promised to be faster and favor the more skilled players, he built a defense of hulking, immobile brutes. Plus he's a dick. I've never met him, but he seems to be a dick.

The Flyers can lick my balls, of course until next season when I'll get strung along again only to have my heart ripped out once more.

Ugly way for Montreal to lose a series. I hope no one harmed Huet or his family. They seem to take this sort of thing seriously up there for some reason. Since I will be unable to log on until at least Monday, I am going to make my round 2 picks now. Is that kosher?

Eastern conference:
Ottawa beats Buffalo in 6 games.
New Jersey beats Carolina in 7 games.

Western conference if Calgary wins:
Calgary beats Edmonton in 7 games.
San Jose beats Colorado in 5 games.

Western conference if Anaheim wins:
San Jose beats Edmonton in 6 games.
Anaheim beats Colorado in 7 games.

Peter Forsberg's stats in Philly's 2 wins:
4 goals, 2 assists

And in their 3 losses:
0 goals, 2 assists

Is any one player more important to his team's success or lack thereof? Marty Turco (heh)?

i wonder if justin williams will brandish his stick in people's face and wound other players and get away with it for like what, the 4th times?

i love how the canes gathered around the refs at the end of game 3-4 for a nice little chat.

Darko, were they legit penalties? And by legit I mean under the "new" rules where you can't use your stick to impede a player. On the one hand, it definitely interrupts the flow of the game. On the other hand, they HAVE to make it clear to everyone involved that this is not acceptable. Defensemen will have to learn to skate to compete in the NHL.

20 FUCKING PENALTIES?!

===

The Detroit game? I missed it all, but from what I've seen, the referees have been doing exactly what they were told to do. If a player tries to impede another player with his stick, call him for a penalty. I'm more amazed at the fact that after an 82 game season and 4 games in the playoffs, guys are still touching players with their sticks. Of course, hockey players are not the brightest bulbs in the world (Joe Juneau not withstanding), so maybe this shouldn't surprise me.

I hope the 'Canes pull back and end up beating the Habs. Not because I think they can (Game 3 was a stroke of luck), because I bet on them!

On a local note, the Idaho Stealheads lost Game 7 to Vegas! Booooo!

Caul, I watched the game last night and I must say the calls were pretty heavily in favour of the Canes. I mean, Koivu took a Carolina stick to the eye, left the ice with blood pouring out his eyes and they didn't call anything and then with less than 5 minutes left in the third they hand a 4 minute penalty for high sticking to a Habs player in a TIED game when the guy wasn't even bleeding or just barely was. Practically handing the game to the Canes, and then in overtime right off the bat he calls a dinky little hook and the Canes win the game.

The refs in these playoffs seem to be trying to steal the show and that makes for the most frustrating hockey to watch.

I heard it on the radio at work and it seemed that the refs did a shitty job. Are people being sore losers or did they actually do a shit job.? I can't tell since I didn't SEE the infractions.

And am I the only one who feels old when he sees NHL players younger than him?

a first and third round pick is alot in my mind.

==========

It'll be interesting to see how the draft plays out with the new rules. If Roloson ends up being a goalie good enough to win in the playoffs, then it's probably worth it. Goalies like that are hard to find. There's a whole history of goalies who were great in the regular season and couldn't cut it in the playoffs. Roman Turek comes to mind. Marty Turco is quickly moving into that category, unless he can really turn things around.

Chelios has been a bitch as far back as I can remember. He has always been a dirty hack. Now he dives. It is because he's too damned old to keep up in the NHL now that he can't hook, hold, and slash players as they blow by him.

So Dallas is down 2-0 to a team backstopped by a coke head. That makes me happy :D

I guess Edmonton is probably better than we thought because they play in a tough division, and Detroit is probably worse than we thought because they play in an easy division. I still like their chances. The veterans on that team will not panic down 2-1. Of course, Chelios is an ass-hat. Maybe he'll keep taking stupid penalties and giving Edmonton extra chances on the power play.

It really makes you wonder if Bob Clarke will figure out that the league did in fact change some rules during the lockout. Loading up on a bunch of stiffs didn't make sense last summer (Hatcher and Rathje), nor did it at the trade deadline (Gauthier). Those Sabres forwards like Briere, Dumont, Connolly and Vanek just keeping winning every footrace. This ain't the '70's Bobby, Moose Dupont clones aren't going to cut it.

I think he does all the little things and leaves it all on the ice. Do I think he's a number one centreman in the league? No, number one centreman with the right people sure. This guy is playing with one rookie and one sophmore and the produxction that comes from that line is probably equal to done with two wingers with 3 years experience.

Koivu is a 60-80 point getter when healthy, its tough to stay healthy the way he plays though.
I love his leadership and when people say he's over paid I disagree because I know he does tons of stuff for that team that the public doesnt see in the room.

but I do think people expect too much from him.lokk at him for what he is not for what you want him to be.

That's not true. That means 99% of us Yanks don't watch at all. That's probably for the people who saw something about the Devils in the newspaper and wanted to find out what all the noise was about. I'd say a good 75-80% of US Americans who watch hockey know EXACTLY what we're watching: the guy who might very well break some or all of Patty Roy's records before it's all said and done.

Tough loss for the Canes. At least a Montreal player didn't leap on top of the goaltender, leaving the net wide open for the game-winner. That's what happened the last time Montreal played the Hurricanes franchise in a multiple OT game.

Well I'm pretty over it now, I mean how long can you stay down about it.

Teams have games like that, the true measure is what do you come back with.

I remember a few years ago they went down 0-2 to Pittsburg and those loses were at home. They looked like the did last night, uninspired. But then they had Game 3 in Pitts, went on to win it in the 5th overtime period and went on to play the Devils for the Eastern Conference.

the point is it takes 4 games to win a series...not 2.

of course I maybe trying to talk myself out of the idea that this team is really not ready this year.

I dunno.

I really like the new league. Teams can't hire big guns just for the playoffs anymore. All the teams are very good. It's very hard to predict the winners with the salary cap and the new rules.

Also, my brother and I were doing bodywork on his truck until we found plastic hockey sticks for children in the shed and started playing like fucking retards in the middle of the street. Two little kids joined us and it was pretty fun. Especially when we raped them afterward.

Well I'd say that I saw more of what the Flyers fans predicted than I did what the Sabres fans did.

They went on and on about how Sabres will skate circles around the Flyers and I just did not see that.

I did see Forsberg look better than he had since the first quarter of the season.

I watched the Philly - Buffalo game, the two Ottawa - Tampa bay games and naturally, Montreal - Carolina.

While the other games were interesting, you just can't beat a game with your local team. And that 6-1 victory was quite great. That goal immidiatly after surviving two powerplays, one 5 on 3, was an awesome backbreaker.

Anyone can tell me why the Hurricans play in the RBC center? That's my bank, a canadian bank. Does it have branches in the U.S. too?

If you had to deal with the Blackhawks you'd be the same way.

================

Die hard Hartford Whalers fan right here. We'd take the Blackhawks now :( I can understand the distaste for the sport right now in Chicago, though. It's almost time for Bettman to step in and forcefully wrest the team from Wirtz's cold, heartless grasp and bring in an owner interested in putting a winning product on the ice in Chicago. The fact that an original 6 franchise is not only terrible but irrelevant is a travesty. Boston and Toronto may be out of the playoffs, but at least they still have fans! Of course, the Thornton trade may push Boston down to Chicago status soon.

Edmonton beats Detroit 4 - 2, series tied 1 -1
