Everyone wants to think that when it comes down to it they will do the right thing. They never think that they will shy away or act like a coward. I do not blame them because I feel the same way... or at least I did. Now I know the truth.

I am a coward. It is not that I am afraid to fight someone. Or stick up for a friend. I have been in those situations and have gotten my ass kicked and kicked some ass. What I am talking about is the shit that happens that will give you nightmares for years. No one realizes the situation, or rather realizes the extremity of the situation until they are in it. I will give you an example.

Imagine you are walking down the street and you come up on this guy robbing a man. The guy has a gun and it is only you. You see the guy before he sees you because you are walking up behind him. You see a log on the ground at your feet.

Right now in your mind you are thinking that you would pick up the log and hit him over the head with it. That would be something that heroes do. Not everyone is a hero and that is not even the whole situation. I am imagining you as a regular person. As a regular person you see the log and imagine everything that could possibly go wrong if you tried to knock him out with it. What if it only knocked him down and he shot you? You look at the situation and gasp in surprise. Well the robber hears you behind him and gets spooked. The gun goes off and shoots the victim in the chest. Blood goes everywhere. The robber screams and runs off. The victim is on the ground. It is dark and you can only see the silhouette and it is not moving. Would you run up to him to see if he is all right? Would you try to stop the bleeding? Or would you scream and run away and find help? Would you pretend you did not see anything and walk away?

You are probably thinking you would help the victim. Make sure they are alive and then go for help. I would like to think I was that kind of guy. Unfortunately I now know I am not. I think I would have been less scared if I were the one shot. You always think you will do the right thing, but then you start realizing just how scary the situation can get. You are scared to death that you will walk up to that victim and he will be dead with blood everywhere and you get so scared you are thinking about the nightmares it is going to bring just with what you have seen so far. Not even with seeing the victim face to face. Then you start thinking about how this is not your problem. What happens if the robber realizes you have seen his face and can identify him? He could be coming back to finish you off too. Now you decide the best thing to do is run away and tell someone to call the police and an ambulance. You find a café around the corner. You run in and it is more or less empty. You go to the guy at the counter and tell him to call the police and an ambulance. You give him the minor details to get him to do it. You are sitting there feeling better and then realize that the robber has seen your face and you have seen his. If you wait for the police they are going to want you to help them find him. What if they cannot find him? It was only a few blocks from your apartment. He could live around here. What if you identify him, he gets arrested, he knows what you look like. He gets out on bail and is walking down the street by both of your apartments and recognizes you. He follows you home and waits for the perfect opportunity to make sure you do not testify.

Now you are really freaked out. You realize no one knows you here and probably cannot find you. So while everyone goes to see what happened, you slip out and go home. You open a beer and drink it in two gulps. You want to take a shower but are so afraid that the guy might already know you and know where you live that you stay by the front door all night.

I used to think I would do the heroic thing. I would be the one who knocked the guy out with the log. Although this situation has never happened to me this is what I am afraid I will do.

I recently saw a head on collision. It was an oversized truck and an Audi sedan. I would have probably left the scene if I were alone. I had never thought it would be so scary to possibly see dead and mangled bodies. Fortunately my buddy yelled at me to come on and we ran to the car to help out. There were four old people in the car. We had to pull them out through the windows because the car had flipped and the doors would not open. There was blood everywhere but luckily everyone was all right.

I did not get nightmares from the gore of the accident. I got nightmares from my actions. I never thought I would be a wuss in a situation like that. And I never want to be one again.

I saved a bus full of people once. It was gory, and there were limbs lying scattered around the bus, but I was prepared because I used to play Doom when I was a little kid.

Last night, I saw a car pull up to a corner and then I saw a guy jump out and attack this guy who was standing there. If I had been just with my buddies, or even alone, I would've run across the street to get involved, but there was no way to ensure that the 2 girls with us wouldn't try to get involved too.

That was me. Chronic, you lost a lot of hair.

thats why i don't eat pizza where black people are allowed to eat.

I think about that situation too. I have no idea what I would do. That guy was huge! I would probably stand there too.

I'm interested to see how I'd react. I used to be a giant pussy and have reacted with severe denial to this sort of shit (turn around and walk away), but now that I believe I actually have the ability to help out in most situations, I would like to believe I would act.

If I was drunk I would just laugh...

It has happened before, I saw a guy get a savage beating and did nothing, he was asking for it, and started the fight, but I didn' tjump in to stop it when he was getting seriously pummelled.

When sober I have gotten a beating fro trying to break up a fight. From now on I try and call 911, unless there is a chick involved.

That is what I am afraid of. I know if I was the one that was shot, I would want someone to help me.I want to be brave enough to do so.

well now you know this about yourself. so, if you're ever faced with a situation of this sort again, you have the awareness with which to face your cowardice down. if it's worth the risk to you.

I tihnk most people would do exacly the same as you- though its impossible tell how they'd react. It's far easier to ignore these things. I would only fight in the name of friends or family.

I walked past a brawl outside a nightclub last night... I just watched as some guy smashed a bottle and jumped on the other, trying to stab him. I'd say it would take massive cojones to intervene in that kind of situation. Cojones that sheltered middle-class guys like me just don't have.
