British mixed-media artist Dave McKean's striking and award winning work has been a great influence on me, both as an illustrator and as an author. He has used a variety of media line-art, painting, sculpture, photography, digital manipulation, typography, and all manner of combinations of the mentioned. His work reaches from the whimsical to the macabre, but no matter what - it is always stunning.
He is best known for his collaborations with the author Neil Gaiman, specifically on the covers for the DC/Vertigo adult comic book "The Sandman." However, his art has transcended that feeble medium and risen to acclaim, being feature in many metropolitan museums. McKean is a prolific artist, creating work at an incredible pace and for all manner of purposes.
The collection of his covers for "The Sandman" comic were packaged as a hardback collector's item called "The Dust Covers." Other famous trade publications he has worked on have included "Black Orchid," "Arkham Asylum," and his 500 page masterpiece, "Cages." McKean completed an illustrative hardback titled "Pictures That Tick," as well as created a children's book "The Day I Swapped My Dad For Two Goldfish." He had produced two photo books, "Black And White Lies" and "Option: Click" as well as created two different sets of tarot cards and a set of collectable post cards.
These images below are only a small representation of some of his better work...

You know, these reminded me of something, so I reached for my bookshelf, and, lo and behold, it's the same guy that illustrated "The Dark Tower: Wizard and Glass."

Fuck yes.
"Wolves in the Walls", by Gaiman and McKean, has been my daughter's favorite book since she was 3.

Erm, Neil Gaiman wrote the day I swapped my dad for two goldfish, the artwork was McKeans. Why no mention of Mirrormask?
My god I can't fucking wait to see that.....
