The following photographs are all by Annie Leibovitz.
Leibovitz is one of the worlds premiere portrait artists. Her work in that regard differs from many others in that she tends to capture the body of those she is working with rather than focusing on head shots and close up images of the face.
In addition to her work as a portrait photographer, Leibovitz often focused on women as her subjects. In one of her recent books, "Women", Leibovitz explored women in their various roles in the world, the shape of the female body...etc.
Leibovitz began shooting professionally for Rolling Stone magazine in 1970 and became their chief photographer by 1973. She took hiatus in 1975 to photographically documenting the world tour the Rolling Stones had just embarked on. She left Rolling Stone magazine in 1983.
By the early 1980s Leibovitz became the first contributing photographer for Vanity Fair magazine. She continues to do portrait work for the magazine. Two famous images she provided for the magazine are of Demi Moore, one in which she is pregnant and nude, and another in which she is nude and has a suit painted on her body.
(Those aren't included below because I hate Demi Moore with a fiery hate that could consume planets if ever it was unleashed. This actually applies to most celebrities, but...)
During this time she also released her first book compilation and did a wide variety of freelance work.

In 1990 she opened her own studio in NYC.
She is one of only two living photographers to have had an exhibit of her work at the National Portrait Gallery.
Magazine and portraiture photographers are often overlooked as hacks. Their work dismissed as commercial fodder.
Leibovitz proves this belief to be incredibly narrow minded. I see the art in this work.

I was lucky enough to see the Leibovitz exhibition in DC yesterday. It was my favorite part of the day.
Her pieces on breast cancer and Susan Sontag in particular brought tears to my eyes more than once.
The emotional effect of photographing the body of someone I love after they've left this world is unimaginable to me.

She was our governor, she was a fine governor. In Texas, in order to properly bust open the good ol' boys club, you have to become "one of the guys" on some level. I think APW is a brilliant bandwagon. It's too bad that some people would rather giggle at a cartoon cock than actually get a small dose of culture for the day. Personally, I will continue to post art-related things on Wednesdays until someone (Bart) tells me to stop. Why? Because I went to fucking art school, and after writing, it's my next great passion.

I adore Annie Leibovitz. She is single-handedly responsible for my finally noticing after something like 10 years that maybe Brad Pitt doesn't look as much like a silverback ape as I thought. Her photographs for Vanity Fair are legendary, and I absolutely adore her eye for composition.
