Have you ever had an experience with somebody who is irrational, anxious and depressed?
Yes, I know, we've all had those experiences with women we've dated. But aside from that, have you ever come across a real life mental patient? Chances are, that this person, in all their whacked out glory, was on some type of medication to curb those same symptoms that made you think twice about getting into it with them
"I'm not happy."
Join the fucking club. The only difference between you and the rest of the world, is the fact that we deal with unhappiness like normal people and you are too weak to do that so you medicate. Fooling yourself into thinking that your medication induced "happiness" is a good thing.
Do these medications even work?
FACT: I work with this girl Shannon at my part time job. She is prescribed to anxiety meds and some type of anti-depressants. She should be fine, right? RIGHT? No. See the next fact...
FACT: This girl is freaking mental. She is a paranoid, anxious mess all the time. One little thing goes wrong and she flips. Screaming, crying and other irrational behavior ensue. She mopes around with a whoa-is-me attitude and is visibly down in the dumps one minute and just-won-the-lottery happy the next.
FACT: I hate my room mate.
Why bother even taking the meds if they obviously don't fix her problems? I just don't get it.
Another thing that bothers me about this medication nation is diet pills. It honestly goes to show the decay of this world. People are too lazy and eat such junk that they become fat. Thankfully, they watch TV all the time and they notice that everybody, especially TV, thinks fat people are gross.
Do they walk to the nearest Whole Foods and buy tons of fruit and veggies and on the way home get a gym membership? No way, they go to CVS and buy the latest diet pill. That way, they can just eat the pill, continue on ruining themselves with the unhealthy diet, and watch TV all the time, AND lose weight.
Yes people, you may lose some pounds, but the toll these pills take on your body, not to mention your psyche, will fuck you in the end. Good luck with that.

I think ADD is overdiagnosed (however not a bullshit disease) but I don't think the medical community is to blame, rather I think the culprits are the parents. firstly, they're too god damn soft on kids these days and run to the psychologist whenever junior gets a B in math instead of an A. secondly, parents are letting kids watch too much goddamn TV, I think there was a study recently that showed a link between TV-watching very early in life and the diagnosis of ADD later on.

I took some medication last night for a migraine that was so bad I couldn't see, or turn on a light cos it hurt so much. Other than that, not even painkillers normally.
Reading an article in the paper on Saturday, saying that people won't use a certain weight loss drug because of the side effects. The side effect is unpleasant- if you eat too much fat, it comes flying out the otehr end in a great hurry. So you have to stop eating fat.
Instead they're taking another drug that's about to be banned because it fucks with your heart, some woman died from it last week after heart problems caused by the drug.

The longest relationships I had (one 2 year ½, the other 1 year) were with two girls who were on prescrition drug for depression. I come from a region of high unemployement, never ending winter with more depression than anywhere else and where the suicide rate is considered the second highest in North America, after Inuits. Our badly manage socialized healthcare also makes Québec us the "champion of Ritalin" and other drugs as a recently published study revealed. It's pretty easy to get presciptions when you can see all kinds of different doctors who have no idea if you just come from another hospital...all of that for FREE! A journalist reported that he was able to get 15 different presciptions within 12 hours just saying he was tired and felt like crap.
I think I've met and been around enough medicated people to build myself an opinion...trust me. You may not agree with it and I couldn't care less but it's an opinion nonetheless. It's my perspective.

The reason for my rating is that this post is poorly articulated and not worth reading. It is not because I was personally offended as a drugged-up dysfunctional. I am neither drugged-up nor dysfunctional. Incorrectly prescribed medication does a ton of damage, so does the kind of thinking that eschews personal responsibillity for one's own mental health. For some people, medication is a literal lifesaver. For some people, it's literally poison. People who have never loved somebody who was psychotic and helped by medication, or known a person who was only able to do the work of changing their thoughts and behaviors after also receiving psychiatric treatment, have no right to talk about all mental disorders being the result of some kind of character flaw. By the same token, people who want to explain all human thought, emotion, and behavior as being nothing more than a pattern of neural firings, neurotransmitters, and hormones, have no right to push a medication-based model of treatment on people who could be much better helped by other models.
The bottom line is that this issue is astonishingly complicated. The oversimplified drivel that most of you have written nauseates me.
My point is that people who choose to go on medication often do so because they are experiencing something that they don't know how to handle, and the option that is presented to them as the most viable is medication. They are in a vulnerable position already, being given advice by someone in a position of authority. The potential for coersion is amazing. We need to develop a new model of psychiatric care that gets away from a disease-model and includes much more understanding of the person as a whole.
Most of you need to shut the fuck up and be thankful that you have absolutely no understanding of the personal, medical, cognitive, emotional, and interpersonal issues that are tied up in this.

I'm mad because there are ignorant people who still think depression has something to do with a lack of willpower or with spoiled selfishness. I'm completely against pharmaceutical antidepressants; they are very far from the solution, and to that extent I agree with this post. But if you haven't been depressed, you absolutely should shut the fuck up. There are a lot of lifestyle changes that can help someone with a mental disorder, and I support them. But these are actual imbalances, caused (in my opinion) by a toxicity or deficiency of some sort, and the problem remains until you attack it in an accurate nutritional and holistic way. Traditional medicine can do nothing for depression, and mind over matter only goes so far. Depressed minds are poisoned, and people have to understand that. They do not reason properly, and they cannot be expected to think themselves out of their faulty thinking.
I've never asked someone to be sorry for me, I'm doing okay. I have a lot to look forward to. At times I have approached Ubersite like a journal, using it as a personal release. In some cases, I'd like to identify with people rather than write my thoughts in a book that's going to get tucked away on a shelf and opened only by me. I would never want to be pitied by anyone, especially someone like you, you just aren't willing to see that. And although you like to paint me as the selfish American brat, the fact that I'm not volunteering at a rehab center in Ethiopia doesn't make me an ignorant jerk. I do have certain causes, things that affect more people than myself, that are really important to me. Incidentally, it is important to me that people understand the nature of depression and mental illness.

I never said that about depression. If so I was exaggarating. What I think is bullshit is throwing meds at bullshit like ADD/ADHD or other trendy syndromes that seem to be poorly researched. Medical researches take years and years. Some of the most respected retro-virus specialists still question HIV as the cause of AIDS so I doubt something as complex and as vague as a brain condition like ADHD can be solved so fast and as easily as presecibing a few milligrams of speed. Idiots like loki who base their drug consumption on "researches" don't realize that scientists are pressured for results to feed that very lucractive industry. That's not a conspiracy theory, that's stating the obvious. "But it's helping me!!!" they say. Yeah, if I took small doses of meth everyday, I'm pretty sure it would help me work too. However hard they try to twist it another way, these people are drug addicts, nothing else. The only difference is that these drugs are legal and for them to be legal, you need causes.
Back to depression. My mom was depressed for a little while. So was my best friend. I can fully understand TEMPORARY depression. Life can be a bitch.
But it's entirely different story for someone who's depressed 24/7, all year long, for the rest of their lives. I don't despise these people because they take medication, I despise them because they are CRAZY. It's that simple : crazy person = bad person. I've been close to enough people like you to confirm the veracity of that equation. Though to call you "people" is a bit of a stretch since to me, you're no better than animals. You sure do act like them.
Back then, when we didn't know about all these syndromes, crazy people were singled out. Nowadays, they walk among us as normal people and leech on society because they can justify their behavior with their illness.

yeah, if its the 3rd then that means you had a work history and contributed to the sytem. medicare will start with your 25th month of entitlement to SSDI. as flawed as the sytem seems sometimes, it works. have a good weekend, and dont catch a cold.

oh, are you on SSIDI or SSDI? SSDI is when you worked for a while and paid into the system and you'd probably get your checks on the 3rd of the month. i guessed cali because you said you get 730 and thats a high amount for SSIDI which is usually 603. and the two year wait is usually for medicare not medicaid but it could be, its hard to keep up with all the different things in different states.

I live in Ohio. I'm not on Medicaid because I have to be on SSDI for a period of two consecuctutive years before it's waived. I tried to go back to work last summer for a short time at Border's Bookstore through a work program. I really wanted to get back out there. Mentally, I was fine... but with all the meds, it was physically exhausting. I would work a lame little six hour shift, come home and promptly fall asleep for hours. This fucked up my sleep schedule, which would then effected me at work the next day. After struggling with this for a few month, the lady from the work program saw what was happening and suggested I just go back on SSDI. I didn't want to, but my performance at work was suffering and the management had already made special alloances for me - which I never asked for and wasn't fair to my co-workers. I quit, and now I have yet another year to wait before I'm on Medicaid.
The worst is if I get an infection of some kind, something that requires anti-biotics. Basic over the counter DayQuil isn't going to solve that. Or the best was 2 years ago when I finally had to get my wisdom teeth removed. They had broke through, grown infected and started to crack. $600 to get them pulled and I didn't even get gas, just novacane. That was a... unique experience.

I send a certified copy of my tax stuff to the SSI office every year. They have all my records. Hell, they UPPED my payments a whopping $30 from last year! Seriously, I make such little from my freelance work that they just smile, pat me on my head, and send me on my way. I get WAY more from my my little brother who gives me $250 a month for rent. (Also reported.)
I, however, do not receive medicaid. I'm part of a clinical study on Abilify and Effexor through my local Mental Health establishment. I get free samples of those Meds. I get my Topomax free from Ortho-McNeil Pharmaceticals because... you ready for this... I wrote them a letter saying how much they're medication had helped me, how the study on Topomax was over and how I wasn't accepted into the Medicaid program yet. I got a year's supply.
So while my psyke meds are all free, if I get a cold or break my arm... I'm fucked.

I was on two different meds at any given time for the last one and a half to two years of my life. Taking pills every night was a pain in the ass, so I stopped. Nothing has changed; I still hate everyone. Verbal therapy is better to learn how to deal with life, if you're so inclined.

I'm mad because there are ignorant people who still think depression has something to do with a lack of willpower or with spoiled selfishness. I'm completely against pharmaceutical antidepressants; they are very far from the solution, and to that extent I agree with this post. But if you haven't been depressed, you absolutely should shut the fuck up. There are a lot of lifestyle changes that can help someone with a mental disorder, and I support them. But these are actual imbalances, caused (in my opinion) by a toxicity or deficiency of some sort, and the problem remains until you attack it in an accurate nutritional and holistic way. Traditional medicine can do nothing for depression, and mind over matter only goes so far. Depressed minds are poisoned, and people have to understand that. They do not reason properly, and they cannot be expected to think themselves out of their faulty thinking.

ssi is like a federal welfare program. the more $$ you make, the less ssi will give you. as far as i know, which is A SHITLOAD!! you have to let your friendly local office know. its needs based, so if you have income, you dont need it. except for maybe the medicaid that comes with it which i'm sure helps out sort of.

I've never asked someone to be sorry for me, I'm doing okay. I have a lot to look forward to. At times I have approached Ubersite like a journal, using it as a personal release. In some cases, I'd like to identify with people rather than write my thoughts in a book that's going to get tucked away on a shelf and opened only by me. I would never want to be pitied by anyone, especially someone like you, you just aren't willing to see that. And although you like to paint me as the selfish American brat, the fact that I'm not volunteering at a rehab center in Ethiopia doesn't make me an ignorant jerk. I do have certain causes, things that affect more people than myself, that are really important to me. Incidentally, it is important to me that people understand the nature of depression and mental illness.

well that blows. they tried to give me effexor in highschool, that lasted a whole minute. try to tell a psychiatrist that you're pissed off all the time for real reasons and he basically told me well that sucks here's some meds since you can't do shit about it or at least i'm not going to give you practical solutions that don't involve you and this pill. i hate doctors. all they wanna do is give you a pill and dammit when i'm sick i know what i need and i get charged for their signature just because most people have no common sense.

I can bring in any income that is not from "Salary" or "Wage."
That pretty much knocks out any part time job. I can make money from "Comission" or "IPR" (Intellectual Property Rights). That's why I do freelance art work and I can spend the rest of the day running various websites devoted to both my work and other author's contributions.

My turn to chime in...
I've made no secret of this, here on Uber. A few years back I was diagnosed with severe Bi-Polar disorder type I with rapid cycling. I've had an MRI done and had multi-phasic blood work done. They determined that my seratonin levels were completely messed up. After a lot of trial and error, A med cocktail was finally found that works well for me.
I take 200mg of Topomax daily, which is actually a med for epilepsy pateints. Epilepsy is triggered by sudden spikes in seratonin (causing the seziurs), and the Topomax helps stabalized that in a way to control the mood swings. I take 150mg of Effexor daily as an anti-anxiety medication. This is to directly combat the depression swings, as people with TRUE Bi-Polar can not take such things as Prozac. I also take 20mg of Abilify daily. Abilify is an anti-psychotic, because my Mania swings tend to be rage-related in nature.
I was part of a clinical study, and I show physical signs realting to my emotional swings. My blood pressure sky rockets, my hands shake, and most strangely... I loose perphial vision. (?) I was having swings 3 to 4 times a day, sometimes without any memory of what I had done or said during the episodes. After I was placed on all the medication, I was sleeping for 12 hours a night and taking at least one nap a day. The dicision was made to place me on Social Security.
I was not pleased.
And yet, I know how dibilitating this has been to me. Most people who meet me right now would never guess they are taking to someone who is "Legally" insane. I am not allowed to donate blood because of my seratonin levels. I am not allowed to own a handgun because of my legal state. I only make $760 a month from SSDI and can only suppliment it by working freelance art jobs. This is not how I pictured my life 10 years ago...
I have tried to go off my meds a number of times. Bad things have happened on each occation. Yes, I wish there was one magic pill I could take that would make me all better and I could just finish school and get a regular job. You don't know how envious I am of people who have normal lives.

I go into the "shrinks" office talk to a social worker for 45 minutes. She in turn sent me to the psychiatrist office who told me that, because of what I told them, I was "depressed". So they gave me the prozac. I took it for a little while but felt detached. So I stopped taking them. A Pill doesn't fix a problem. Its like putting a band-aid over a gun shot wound. It just covers up the problem and it WILL get worse.

i hate birth control pills. they have so many nasty side effects and probably even more that haven't been discovered yet. taking hormones for years on end cannot be good for you. unfortunately it's the only acceptable method for a lot of people i guess.
