Luther threw the noose around my neck as I stood barefoot on the gallows. He gave it a hard tug for good measure, turned and flashed a wicked grin at me in private, so that the townsfolk couldn't see him, and then smugly walked down the steps to take his spot by Reverend Arvill.

Arvill took his spot at the podium. "Daniel Joe Wells, you have been charged with the first-degree murder of your wife Kathryn Lucretia Wells by strangulation. How do you plead?"
They'd found her body in the swamp, near the woods where I'd witnessed the orgy before Luther had knocked me out. I don't know where the niggers had gone after that. All I remember is waking up, finding Katie asleep on the ground, and with my slaves not there to defend her, the temptation overcame my conscious. My hands had a mind of their own that night, they did.
"She was fucking four of my hired hands. She deserved it," I responded to the reverend.

A roar of anger erupted from the townsfolk at my response. "Liar!" "There's no proof she did that!" "Evil one!" "Hang him!" Clearly I wasn't going to get any sympathy from the crowd. Shouldn't have been surprised. Damn Bible-thumping idiots always took the woman's side in these types of cases.
Bobby, the sheriff, leaned over and whispered in my ear, "I understand why you did it. But it has to be like this. Can't afford to lose my job and respect by not upholding the law. Sorry, buddy. At least I was able to stall the hanging a month."
Yeah, I'll bet. Even when we were kids, he was always dodging danger to save his own hide when the rest of us stood up against the risks. You failed me, Bobby. "See you in hell," I whispered back in return.

"You all heard him!" Arvill proclaimed. "Danny has pleaded guilty to killing his wife Lucy! As the book of Deuteronomy says, an eye shall be repaid with an eye, a tooth with a tooth, and a life with a life. You have been sentenced to death by hanging. Luther...your position at the gallows, please."
Luther happily took his spot by the release mechanism. "Before you die, then...any last words, Daniel Joe Wells?" asked Reverend Arvill.
Looking him directly in the eyes, I bitterly exclaimed, "Nothing like doing time for a love that was supposed to be for all time."
As the floor opened beneath me, the last sight in my eyes was a glimmer of recognition in his own of the sin being committed by him on the gallows at that very moment.

I liked the series overall, but this one could used much more development-- it was over very quickly. Did I already mention I love the name Lucretia?

I read all three entries before I rated them - this is a contest rating only, okay? If it was a regular post I'd have rated it better, but for the contest you get third place.... it was a good story but the writing was unpolished.

Yeah, I had to rush through the past few rounds 'cause of crammed work weeks. Coyote deserved to win this though anyways, he's clearly the better writer...well, Jack too...
...okay, a LOT of people on here are better writers.
