When one wishes to pigeonhole the actions or personality traits of another but one has no familiarity with psychological terms, the description often becomes quite lengthy. I often look for a word or hyphenated term that will sum up succinctly the actions of another who irritates me. Often, terms such as control freak or anal-retentive apply wonderfully, but sometimes the term I want is very elusive.
What is the word for someone who must qualify or amend everything someone says? Know-it-all, showoff, etc. come to mind, but they are not precise enough. The person I have in mind would continue his blather even when everyone around him was fidgeting, rolling their eyes, and talking about other things. If a subject came up that he knew little about, you could rest assured that a couple of days later he would raise the conversation again. Obviously he had gone to great lengths to study up on the matter until he figured he knew more than we did. No one I knew ever praised him for being so knowledgeable, so if he needed recognition, he failed. This gentleman also had a disturbing habit of starting his diatribes with, "what you don't understand, " or "what you need to realize."
I broke him of that horrible habit with me by asserting in my loudest voice that he had no place in telling me what I needed to realize or, even more insultingly, presuming to know what I did or did not understand.
The other type is the one who questions or argues with any statement made by anyone, even if you are restating his own position from a day earlier. Quite often he uses poorly orchestrated Sophistry in his rants, and I have squashed him mid-sentence many times. No matter, he continues his foolish drivel, even when discussing business options at work.
Many people on this planet, regardless of their IQs, can converse with others without pissing off all listeners. We all have unfulfilled emotional needs that color our words and actions, but an intelligent person should be able to read the lay of the land during a conversation. In many cases body language is idiosyncratic, but when four out of five listeners begin to roll their eyes, it is time to reassess what drips out of your mouth.

Try having a family member like this. My brother's third grade teacher made the mistake of telling everyone that he was the smartest boy in her class. He is now 22, and truly believes he knows everything about everything. Telling him to piss off won't make him quit, either.

You see habits are learned actions that have repeated throughout ones life, and changing habits is very hard and generaly not worth the effort. I once worked with a guy who stood up one day while a few of us where shooting the shit and announced to everyone in the office that he had a college education (which I do not have, and he loved to rub it in) and therefore could spell any word you gave him.
I immediately shouted "SYZYGY!"
