I am an Avid Musician and a lover of music and I have engaged in a debate many times that I present to the Uber masses now.
Beatles or Rolling Stones?
Now me personally I am a Beatles fan, plain and simple.
Maybe it is because my dad was a beatles Fan.
Maybe it is because I think the Rolling Stones should have stopped playing a long fucking time ago.
Who cares.
To me the Rolling Stones are RIDICULOUSLY overrated.
Yes they were influential. Yes some of their OLDER music is timeless such as "Paint it Black"... To this day that song still conjurs images of Vietnam (Primarily because of that show Tour of Duty, back in the day, not because I went to 'Nam)
However when you look at the evoloution of the Beatles, they started the boy band concept, They were the first obviously drugged induced rock band(It is rumored that John Lennon recorded the entire track of "Revolution" on his back because he was incapacitatingly High), they experimented with sects and concepts of music that hadn't been done (ie: the dog whistle, or revolution #9) To this day their music remasters and compilations still go platinum. And not to mention they were all Knighted by the British Royal Family.
Ok.. so Rolling Stones... They were drawn in to the Simpsons, have done a lot of Drugs or too many rather(very obvious by looking at Keith Richards), and They had a Movie starring Whoopee Goldberg named after after one of their songs. So yeah... What do ya'll think??
The Beatles may not have been bigger than Jesus, but they sure as hell are and Always be bigger than the Rolling Stones in my opinion.
Comments? Complaints? Smart Ass Remarks?
oooo I hope I get a submission troll........

It's just personal taste. Robert Plant and Paul McCartney are just as pretentious as singers, if not more pretentious.

"DMD, you called Mick and the Stones "pretentious", which right off the bat indicated that you know next to nothing about the band. The Beatles release an almost ten minute song with random noises, and you call the Stones pretentious? Have you ever heard Led Zeppelin's fourth album? It's a fucking monster of an album and one of the best of all time, but if you think the Stones are more pretentious than that, you don't have a clue. If you don't like them, then don't listen to them. But if you intend to be taken seriously when you call all of their fans retarded then you should at least learn about the band's history."

Beatles and Stones are my two favorite bands and anyone who says that one is way more "influential", "important" and "worthy" than the other one is simply ignorant. If you don't like the way they sound, then you don't like the way they sound. If you can't stand Mick Jagger's voice, then you can't stand his voice, but trying to actually use logic to argue that the Beatles were better than the Stones is stupid, and saying that the Stones weren't nearly as important as the Beatles in the British music scene just tells me that they don't know shit about the band. If people don't like a certain band they often try to make some lame argument about how only idiots could like that band.

A few main things that the Stones are important for:
- The whole concept of the flamboyant, ugly/sexy frontman and the cool, laid-back guitar hero. This combo has been replicated a million times by probably 75% of the rock bands that followed in the late 60s up until today.
- The introduction of the slide guitar to British guitarists. Brian Jones was the first guy in Britain to actually play the slide guitar the way it was meant to be played. After he brought it to Britain, every guitarist that has ever mattered has made big use of the slide.
- The "filthy assholes" image of rock and roll bands. With the slight exception of Mick, all of the guys in the band (especially Keith and Brian) were dirty street kids who knocked up teenagers, didn't shower, and were always wasted.
- The idea that it wasn't only niggers that could lay down a solid rhythm.
The Stones have sucked for 30+ years, but that doesn't mean they weren't worth something in their prime.

lmao ok let's see then
Musically
Jagger is a TERRIBLE singer; his voice is grating, his affect is pretentious and annoying. The rest of the band is passing but unspectacular. the stones wrote about 3 good albums, and devoted the rest of their time to being the epitome of 'style over substance'
On the other hand, the Beatles had 3 members that could outsing Jagger without trying, and all 4 members could play at least 4 instruments each.
stones 2/5 beatles 4/5
Popularity
you got this one right
stones 4/5 beatles 5/5
Influence
the stones don't exist without the beatles and neither do pink floyd, yes, king crimson, frank zappa, and nearly every rock band that came after them. the beatles invented progressive rock.
stones 3/5 beatles 5/5
Lyrically
Lennon/McCartney is second only to Bob Dylan in songwriting prowess, period.
stones 3/5 beatles 5/5
Originality
once again, the beatles were the first band to truly progress past rock and roll. they did folk better than most folk artists, psych better than most psych bands, and progressive rock a year before zappa's first album, and the put them together in a way no one had ever done or has done to this day.
the stones didn't do anything new. they played basic bluesy rock, and never came close to being as good as zeppelin or the allman brothers.

I'll have to vote for the Stones for the copout reason that our first dance at my wedding was 'Wild Horses' although we had the cover version by The Sundays.
But I like both. The Stones are lucky to still be alive. Beatles only have McCartney left.

+2 for starting a good argument.
Stones. all day long. Here's why:
I think in any debate like this you have to narrow it down. Musically, Popularity, Influencing-arity, Lyrically, or Orignality are all great debates to have, but each of them will result in a different answer for a different reason. the "overall" debate is a tough one to have.
I think the only way to do it is to compare the Top 3 songs to the Top 3 songs.
what are we looking at here: A Day in the Life, Love me Do, and Lucy in the Sky vs Beast of Burdon, Paint It Black, and Angie? That's debateable in itself, but let's just say that's the case for argument's sake.
Let's do each 5 categories for each band:
Musically: Stones 5/5, Beatles 3/5
Popularity: Stones 4/5, Beatles 5/5
Influencing-arity: Stones 4/5, Beatles 3/5
Lyrically: Stones 4/5, Beatles, 4/5
Orignality: Stones 5/5, Beatles 4/5
Totals: Stones: 22/25, Beatles 19/25
settled once and for all.

Pick A or B:
A. Beatles
B. Stones.
"I'll pick C, Joe, 'cause it has a beat and you can dance to it."
C'mon, baby, bite my wire. . .
====
joe C from that redneck band? Fuck, I can't remember the name... It was one main redneck... Shit... What was it. Bawitdaba... GOD DAMN IT... RIGHT! Kid rock.
You mean Joe C from kid rock?
For me, I have to say that I find the stones more fun to listen to, and they have much more of a groove to them. I can't listen to their songs without that feeling that I've just gotta get up and move.
Sure the Beatles were great. And maybe I just take them for granted, maybe I'm just jaded. But listening through their music, I don't find too much that really jumps out and grabs me by the balls, talks to my soul and punches me in the forehead with brass knuckles that have "ROCK AND ROLL" emblazoned on them.
With the exception of the guitar solo in "Hard Day's Night" I can't fucking stand the first nine songs on their 1 album. And don't get me wrong, I love the Beatles.
I'm on the fence. And that's where I will stay. You can't compare the Beatles to the Stones. All you can say is which you enjoy more. And when I'm feeling in a certain mood, I can swear by the Beatles. But last september, when I was standing no less than 30 feet away from the main stage in a crowd of 85,000 people, and the first chords of "Start me up" rang through the audience, and flames blasted out of the stage towards the night sky, and Sir Mick Fucking Jagger ran out of the flames wearing a pink jacket and a fedora, and started running around the whole evening, like sprinting all over the stage, singing perfectly the whole time, and Keith must have smoked at least three packs throughout the show, and when he was giving a little speech about how "I'm glad to be here... At this age... I'm glad to be anywhere!" when he finished I yelled out "LIGHT ANOTHER CIGARETTE" he pointed into the crowd with that gay little hand/gun action that is totally not gay when he does it and he smiled and proceeded to light er up, I couldn't have cared less about the Beatles.

fuck the beatles. I mean they had a good sound and what not but I don't think they're near as awesomely cool as they were made out to be in my youth. They sound like shit and I was never very impressed with them. Anyone who says they started rock and roll needs to be shot in the head for not paying attention. As for them starting the boy band concept, I say fuck them with a few more inches for that fact. Beatles are overrated in a big way.
I dig the Stones about as much as the beatles (tolerable) but they don't get as much attention.

Bonger, you remind me of the guy from RCA records who refused to sign The Beatles.
"We don't like their sound, and guitar music is on the way out."
He was fired within months after they signed with Capitol.

And a warm hole. (That was what you heard if you played the record backwards.)

When you play "ABBEY ROAD" backwards, all you hear is
Dipshit, Dipshit, Dipshit. :)

The Beatles.
Even though they didn't record much of it, the Stones started out as
a blues band. There is a BB KIng album where he did duets with about
a dozen other artists, and the one that stands out is "Payin' The Cost
of Bein' The Boss', a duet with the Stones. It is fantastic.
When The Beatles first hit the music scene I was 14 years old, which is
when I took up playing guitar. Part of what gave the Beatles their sound
was the different chord inversions they used.
The Stones have their place in history, but they are not The Beatles. . .

"Revolution #9" was all Lennon. McCartney fought with him to keep it off the White Album, and personally I agree with him. I didn't consider it a song so much as an experiment with tape loops. That and I get this impression that Lennon was sort of mean. "Strawberry Fields Forever" was a real pioneering work, especially for the time - they introduced the Mellotron to popular music, and made use of all sorts of arrangement. "Helter Skelter" was a foray into hard rock and outlined what was to come in that regard.
Stones? I like some of their stuff. I never listen to them too heavily, though; I could never tell you who was in the band besides Jagger and Richards.

I'll say Beatles for me too.
They weren't afraid to experiment with their sound either.

anyway, the stones were an awesome rock band, no doubt about it they evolved over the years and perhaps if they had crashed and burned 3 decades ago they would be held in higher status now... that said the Beatles are it for me
