One of my cousins is really into Alex Grey, and turned me onto him as well. I really like the subject matter that he draws and paints- although it isn't for everyone.
Alex Grey was born in Columbus, Ohio on November 29, 1953. From an young age he was interested in death, as is evident in his early works. After attending Columbus College of Art for 2 years, he dropped out to paint billboards for a year. Later he went to Boston Museum School to study another artist. While at Boston Museum School he met his wife, apparently they did a lot of acid together.
After BSU came Harvard Medical School working with cadavers- studying them and prepping them for dissection. This is where he gained the knowledge that allowed him to paint in such detail some of his works, which have sort of an x-ray appearance of the human body allowing you to see organs, bones and the chakras. When some of the doctors saw his work, they asked him to do medical illustrations.
Grey was also an instructor at NYU in Artistic Anatomy and Figure Sculpture for 10 years. Now he teaches courses in New York, Colorado, and California.
His paintings have appeared in album art for TOOL, Nirvana and the Beastie Boys. He's been featured on rave fliers and sheets of acid.
