Edward St. John Gorey (1925-2000)
Born and raised in Chicago, Gorey attended the Francis W. Parker School during his childhood. He had a two year stint in the US Army during the last of WWII, though he didn't see overseas action. After hi stime in the service was up, Gorey attended Harvard University from 1946 to 1950.
For most of the 1950s he lived in New York City and worked for the Art Department of Doubleday Anchor as an illustrator. Some of his more widely known work in this venture includes a printing of 'Dracula', an edition of 'The War of the Worlds', and 'Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats' by T. S. Eliot. (I own a copy of all of these. Because they kick ass.)
Gorey was a prolific illustrator, and an author in his own right, with the majority of his artwork being done in the pen and ink medium. His books were sometimes offered as childrens books, but with a sinister quality to them, a penchant for archaic language and his fondness for gruesome events to befall his characters, they were probably better suited for the viewing pleasure of adults.
Strange adults.
Gorey became more widely known in the late 1970s and early 1980s for two works; the animated credits for the PBS 'Mystery' television series and the costumes and set he designed for a Broadway production of Dracula.
Gorey wrote over 100 books in his lifetime, including these, the ones I own:

I guess for me the attraction is the balance between the relative simplicity of some of the drawings and the macabre subject matter that they often go along with. It puts one in mind of a child right on the edge of a great career as a raving psychopath expressing his future intentions through pen and ink. Lovely.
I've included 'The Gashlycrumb Tinies' in its entirety rather than taking a sampling from his other works. Because it's my favorite.

I just had someone ask me about it as soon as loki said it and jumped.
Nothing stopping anyone else from taking a stab at it as well. That would add some other people into the mix anyway, as you'd use users that I wouldn't most likely.

I just love the picture that goes along with it. School-kid just standing there, as if to say, do-dit-do, I'm just going to skip home today. And then you see the arms with the piece of linen getting ready to smother him out of annoyance because the school-kid wouldn't shut up during class, and all the thug wanted to do was present his project in peace, and the school-kid just wouldn't shut up, so during recess they began playing hide in seek, and that's when the thug strikes, screaming, WHY WOULDN'T YOU JUST LET ME HAVE MY MOMEMT.
