I just finished watching a BBC show called "Honey We're Killing The Kids" and I was struck with all the amazement that has been building up inside me for years.
What the hell is happening to our families?
For those not familiar with the show, basically, this doctor/psychologist/nutritionalist/weirdo chick lectures a couple about the health of their children. She covers the gamut of related issues: diet, exercise, emotional/mental health, etc. and claims that by god if they don't strictly follow her rules, their children are gonna grow up to be ugly, gross slobs that look like they're one chicken leg away from a massive coronary.
But my point doesn't revolve around the diet thing. Yeah their diets were disgusting, but the thing that turned my stomach was when the doctor woman made the parents implememnt a regiment of positive activities that cut down on the amount of time the kids spent watching telelvision. Hell, I like watching television just as much as the next lazy human being but good grief, if someone took my television away, would I lay sobbing and screaming on the floor with my arms wrapped around it refusing to part with it? This kid was like a junkie, and the worst part is the mother apologized for taking the tv away! It's like apologizing for wanting your kid to live a long healthy life!
Another thing I see constantly is the disrespect these same kids have for their parents and grandparents and for that matter, people in general. When I was a kid, if I said "no" to my parents when they told me to do something, I got a slap across the face. Nowadays, when the parents tell their kids to do something, THEY get a slap across the face; not necessarily physical, but almost always verbal. And they take it! Where the hell are these parents' backbones? This society is disintegrating and it all goes back to the family unit. Without proper discipline and respect for the family arrangement, no society can stand. In a few years, we're gonna have a bunch of useless pricks on our hands who don't know how to work because everything has been given to them on a silver platter and who don't respect anyone or anything because they haven't been taught to appreciate all the wonderful gifts they've been given by their parents and every other person who loves and cherishes them.
It's already coming. Can disaster be averted? Discuss.

Yeah but slapping your kids turns them into dumbasses. Sad but true.
I dunno, it's a bit of a dodgy area. I mean it's easy to see how this sort of thing can happen, after all parents love their children and can easily coddle them and not enforce discipline. Then there's the other side of the problem when parents are tired and ratty all the time so discipline their children to the point where they suffer a kind of learned helplesness. Then there are other potential factors that could be causing the child to adore his time with the tv so.
My point is that there are probably hundreds of different factors present in these situations and beating a child might stop them making noise that irritates you but it doesn't resolve the problem. If you get what I mean.

I am not taking a side on this openly, but I am wondering how many of you have children? I mean of the ones commenting, and more importantly, th eindividual who wrote this submission.

Yes, we live in a depraved society and our children represent that. Hopefully the program was followed by a dateline special about sexual predators. It would juxtapose nicely: "Fat ugly kids and the middle aged men that want to have sex with them."

I work at an elementary school and see this behavior far too often; children think that they make the rules for the family, and by golly, if mom or dad tries to implement any sort of control it is either blatantly ignored by the child, or a temper tantrum is thrown. It makes any sort of discipline we have to exercise extremely difficult, since these damn kids aren't used to listening to any sort of authority figure, whatsoever.
I grew up knowing that if I mouthed off, I'd get in trouble, so some of the things these kids come up with and say utterly blow my mind.
On the other hand, I really do enjoy this show... cause seeing fat little boys cry about not being able to eat donuts and candy kind of makes me laugh. Serves the spoiled brats right.

Alot of parents these days let their kids make all the rules. Whatever they want, just so long as everyone is happy. Fuck that. If you are not beating your child for talking back, you are doing something wrong.
Oh, and stop feeding your fat kids McDonalds. That should constitute child abuse if you go more than once a month.
