This post is about music and only music. If you don't like metal or don't give a flying fuck what I think about music just give me my -2 and go back to camping one of the posts you have been on all day. If you like music or want to hear what I think about an album that is one of the best I have heard in years then read on and enjoy.
There is a style of music that I like to call 'Melodic Metal'. I have heard it called 'Extreme Power Metal' as well.
What's 'Melodic Metal' Bob? You might find yourself asking, or maybe not, to be honest it doesn't affect me in the slightest. But I digress.
'Melodic Metal' is metal that is played by a fucking gifted group of musicians who are usually found in groups of 6 or 7, larger than your usual 3 or 4 piece bands. These groups often have long hair and there will be a keyboardist somewhere in their midst. They have all been listening to metal since they were little but often have a lot of classical music theory in their history.
Now, don't get me wrong, there are a lot of gifted musicians who play metal and I LOVE heavy music, but this is different. It is a lot more melodic, there are a ton of harmonies in the vocals and with the keyboard in the background it just has a more round and full sound than most of your metal.
They usually have songs that range in length from 5 mins and up. The shortest song on the CD will be an EPIC ballad that is filled with ripping guitar solos, crazy vocal harmonies and some good wholesome fun. The other songs will be in you face and you feel rejuvenated after listening to it.
I recently discovered a band that has gotten me fucking pumped up. They are called 'Dragonforce' and they FUCKING RIP. Listen to their album in the morning on my way to work has become a healthy alternative to coffee.
It is unbelievable; I don't think that I have been as excited for an album since 'Lateralus' came out. There are only 8 songs on the disc but it is over an hour long. Words cannot describe how much I enjoy this album. It is called 'Sonic Firestorm' and you can tell that these guys are pretty hardcore from just reading the lyrics. They are all about epic journeys and battles for the universe. The singer has and AWESOME range and every one of the 6 band members sing backup vocals. There is a minimum of 2 KILLER guitar solos in each song and they are all awesome.
They have a few songs you can listen to even if you just go to their website. The songs start playing right away and you will be hooked.

Their new album comes out on the 20th in Canada and the U.S. and I would urge you to pick it up if this is the kind of music you like, you will not be disappointed.
If you like this kind of music and want another band to listen to try 'Dream Theatre'.

Holy shit, dude, I just looked at their lyrics and I have to say they sound like six Lord of the Rings-obsessed D&D auto-fellators. Maybe their music is good, but their lyrics are ludicrous to the point of self-parody.

And also if you're looking for musical greatness find a different band- dragonforce use the same old tired riffs, progressions and wankery as their predecessors; however its sped up. Even their decent material has a bunch of stolen melodies (from various artists and video game music).
Listen to other progressive or power metal bands if you're looking for something musically complex and intricate. Try Steve Vai, Satriani, Mattias Eklundh (Band: Freak Kitchen) and Chris Broderick (Jag Panzer, Nevermore) for shred starters. Necrophagist is also a very talented band.

I dont get how you can say you like Dream Theater and hate this. There is not that much difference in the music other than the Keyboardist for DreamTheater is WAY WAY WAY better than this guy...

Anything that refers to itself as 'extreme', isn't.
The style of music you're referring to used to be called "Power Ballads". There's whole collections on K-Tel. Dragonforce just has better amps than Warrant did.
