What can I say? You've got me. It's not a proven fact (well at least it may be provable but not one that I can prove without extensive research) it's my opinion plane and simple. I agree that's what air support if for and that troops could've died going on the ground. But no it's because it's a case of trying to show how badass we are it's because I genuinely believe he was worth capturing alive. And remember it wasn't just him but some of the highest ranking Al-Quaida leaders in Iraq. To say that there is nothing that we could've learn from them is foolish. And that's beside the fact that by capturing them they are disgraced and imprisoned in front of the eyes of the world as opposed to be being martyred and glorified by their follows. Which I believe is the bigger punishment.

All I would say is that while this may have been the best way to go my first thoughts on reading this in the news was "there goes Rumsfield again jumping in with his size 9's" It's a proven fact that as far as tactics are concerened the U.S. more than any other country favours the tactics of blowing the fuck out of everything and then seeing what you've got when the dust settles. As far as US tactics, what are you comparing them with? When was the last time the UK led a coalition like this, when any western country did? Or had command in an engagement this large? How is this a proven fact if you have nothing to judge other countries tactics on? As far as I know Foreign air forces copy US system of enganging targets on ground with air support. just because they have the luxury not to use it doesn't mean it wouldn't be their perferred method.
as far as jumping in with size 9's, this wasn't in the middle of a city, or a highly populated area. the reason we have planes and bombs is so we don't have to send in ground troops. this is the perfect use for weapons like this, almost no risk to your people and it destroys the target.
I am sorry your argument to me sounds like someone from 1915 who grew up on stories of calvary charges and thinks only those "other people" sully themselves with dirty rifles. I just see sending in ground troops in a case like this as showing off how you can slug it out on the ground.

All I would say is that while this may have been the best way to go my first thoughts on reading this in the news was "there goes Rumsfield again jumping in with his size 9's" It's a proven fact that as far as tactics are concerened the U.S. more than any other country favours the tactics of blowing the fuck out of everything and then seeing what you've got when the dust settles. WTF!
Hey guys I wasn't bragging about our special forces at all! SAS, SBS, Navy Seal, Delta force whoever they all kick ass. They share a couple of (if not more) common skills which make them pretty lethal in a combat situation.
ie. The don't panic, they work as a team and they hit what they fucking aim at.
My point was simply that not just the British but most other nations would have handled this as a surgical incision not just a hammer blow. I mean for fucksake they blew up the building he was in. Reportedly you have not just him there but a whole bunch of his higest ranking buddies were in there with him and you say no decent intel could have been gained be serious.

As far as a surgical strike, I am sure these guys weren't just sitting around sipping tea. And this is a group that has a proven commitment to suicide tactics. I am not a special forces "expert" but as long as we are playing armchair general, I have played ghost recon and seen Navy SEALs a few times, and I really doubt the ability to take someone alive who is trained, (he may not be but his men were) willing and entrenched. I think it is huge gamble to send in ground troops because even if he kills one before he is killed or captured it is a victory for them.. i think killing him from afar with no chance of hurting a soilder was the best way to go.

As for trhe media hype around Saddam yeah ok I'll give you that but the man is being put on trail by the international community for the crimes he committed. It's being done up front, it's being carried out due to international law and it's in front of the whole world. I don't want to start an Anglo American argument here but I have to say the British would've sent troops in first. Yes they'd be special forces, Yes they'd have air support. But they we wouldn't've (is that a word) used to tactic of blowing up the building first and THEN sendiong troops in to see if there's anything left.
I mean call be crazy but the Top Al-Kaida guy in Iraq might have had some usefull infomation which could've been gained if he hadn't been blown up first.
