He eliminated political opponents (in his case commies). Stalin did the same thing and you can't say he really followed the ideas of communism. Regardless of their ideology, they both led in rahter similar ways.
Does Bush really adheres to the conservative small government ideas? Is Harper really a conservative if he supports much of our heavily socialized system?
You could make the same argument with every single leader. Labels mean little and move around the political spectrum a lot over time.

Concerning the Hitler youth. I have a major fucking problem with the pope. Joseph Ratzinger, of Benedict the 16th, whatever the hell you want to call him, was a member of the Hitler Youth. This is wrong. I don't care how old he is or was at the time. I don't care that he may have been forced to join against his will (I highly doubt it). I don't care that Germany and most Germans today denounce the Nazis, and today Germany has little to do with them other than history. He was still a member. Now, I don't blame him for this. But I do blame the Vatican for chosing him and presenting him to the world as God's chosen man, or interpreter or whatever. The man was a member of the Hitler Youth, for Christ's sake! What kind of message does this give out?! The leader of the Christian faith once actively supported the man who is widely seen as an anti-Christ.
There is something seriously wrong with this.

My soon-to-be ex-mother in law was in the Hitler Youth as a child and truly, with every breath in her body, believes that Hitler was not as bad as the world made him out to be and that the Holocaust never happend. My children (her step-children) aren't allowed to talk to her about it (my decision).

Well, yes. But any German with any education (as they learn this shit in school like you wouldn't believe) will point out, Hitler really wasn't very Socialist. The name is misleading, it was only a tool in getting to power. The NSDAP started off with lightly social-oriented goals, but it was all warped and twisted very radically over time, and by the time the Nazis had full and unquestionned power, they were pretty fucking far from socialism. They even jailed and executed socialists. They were sent to the camps along with blacks, jews, gays, communists, and everybody else who didn't fit into their perfect ideology.
