I live on a cul de sac. I have for most of my life. Over the course of
the years, when I'm outside mowing the lawn or whatever I frequently
see people who don't live on my particular court come down and drive
around my circle for seeminly no particular reason whatsoever. That's
not especially surprising I know, this sort of thing is known to happen
in ugly little suburbs like mine all across the country.
I always find myself inspecting the car, and its passengers if I can,
out of a twisted sense of curiosity I guess, to see if I can guess
what sort of boneheaded reason they had for their behavior. Commonly it
would be teenagers (always more then one) with their windows down
blasting music, driving way too fast. I always chalked it up to
dumbasses being dumbasses.
It mystified me though, when teens would drive with their windows down
blasting music going way too slow. Excessive hormones dictate
they always drive fast in order to impress their similarly
stricken friend. Driving like your grandmother is rarely smiled upon.
Nevertheless it happens quite frequently.
Usually I pause whatever I'm doing and follow them with my eyes
and a blank face as the intruders roll through my court. I never
acknowledge them. Only when they're off do I return to my former task.
Then the other day I was rolling through a foreign cul de sac myself,
windows down blasting dismemberment plan (emergency & i) and driving
way too slow. I was driving way too slow of course because I was
stoned, we ran out of rolling paper so we were passing the pipe off
as I drove. It was quite late (we were postgaming a *lame* party)
but nevertheless there were a few older teens of my approximate age
hanging out talking and fucking around with lax sticks.
As we rolled through their court the conversation paused as everyone
stopped to silently eyeball us rolling through their neighborhood
really slowly with our windows down and music blaring.
It was dark enough that I had no fear of being noticed but it was
unsettling to see them all the same. I never like to see people when
I'm rolling around and baking. I always have a paranoid curiosity
as to what they're thinking when they see us roll around at that sort
of hour for no apparent reason at all. And that's about when I made
the connection.
I find it alternatingly amazing and terrifying to think about how many
people in the world are doing the exactly what I am at any particular
moment.

Don't you have any country-type roads to drive on? Around here we just cruise up into the bush and smoke our brains out... don't like doing it in town -- too heaty.
