----------------
Three men of considerable power stood in a clean room with flat screen displays around them. One of the men had his power in his mind, a genius ability to create and craft things. The other two were leaders of the mightiest military that existed in the modern world.
The subject had finally reached the point of critical testing. All the grooming, all the planning, everything was for naught if the subject didn't react exactly how they had planned.
"Final testing is ready to begin at your behest." Dr. Jacob said straightening his blazer nervously in front of the two men of power. He was nervous because previous projects had failed because of a lack of funds, and this might be a the biggest cash cow he had ever invented. He pushed his wide glasses back up his nose and tried to do something with his hands that showed that he wasn't anxious, despite the obvious signs that he was. The two generals, a portly man named General David and a solid but aging man named General Jones blinked back at the nervous man with empty stares.
"Begin the test." General David said with a level voice. Dr. Jacob turned to a display and leaned over to the microphone that was embedded into its base. Pressing a small button on the console turned on a red light as the microphone began searching for a hint of noise.
"Subject 06? Subject 06 can you hear me?" Dr. Jacob said nervously into the microphone.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Subject 06 can you hear me?" Lieutenant Harrison's ear bud mic spat into his head.
"Yes I hear you." Harrison said trying to catch his breath. The last room had been difficult to go through, more difficult than the previous. Of course that had been what the doctor told him right? Each room is progressively more difficult in order for him to truly become a member of the Fourth Echelon Special Operations unit. As the doctor had said, everyone took this test. Everyone who joined.
The surgery before the final test had changed Harrison beyond his wildest dreams. He was faster, less likely to tire, more stable and altogether a much stronger human specimen. The doctor had told Harrison before he went under that to defend his countries ideals he needed to be stronger and faster than was normally physically possible for a human, thus the artificial enhancements were necessary.
Harrison was still sort of surprised they had even picked him for testing at all. They had said they only picked one person per year for this test, why him? His military record was not spotless, and had a few counts of cowardice on it. Sure Harrison was a great warrior, but along with that was a knowledge of what he could and could not do. He refused to sacrifice himself in a situation that he couldn't come out on top of.
Perhaps that is what they are testing here, Harrison thought to himself. The doctor had explained the layout of the test in the beginning. A 2 mile long corridor of plain white walls separated by rooms every 30 meters, and each room had a new and more deadly test in it. Some had attack dogs, other puzzles and riddles, some had poisons his body had to endure, and one had a specially modified Civilian Protection Drone that he had to destroy. But along the way he had proved his worth and picked up a few toys as well. The small sub-machine guns that he had strapped under his belt had proved very effective in the last rooms where combat was needed.
And Harrison had been counting the rooms, he knew this was the last one. The last room of surprises and threats till he became something elite, something truly special. Harrison grinned to himself as he realized that the best they could throw at him hadn't been enough. His minor injuries were not enough to slow him down considerably, and his path into a life of secret servitude to his country was assured.
There was a moment of pause as Harrison stood in front of the last white door waiting for the doctor to talk to him. Several times before he had whispered to Harrison what to expect in the next room, and it was always prudent to wait and see if he would give a hint as to what Harrison was facing next.
But this time when the voice of the doctor rang out, it wasn't in his personal ear bud mic, it was in loudspeakers that blared across the entire complex. The loud noise caused Harrison to shrink slightly as the silence of the complex was glaringly broken.
"Lieutenant Harrison, in the next room are eight heavily armed men who have been ordered to kill you. Enter the room, clear all hostiles." The speaker boomed.
'Eight men?' Harrison thought to himself, 'How can I kill eight men?'
The issue to Harrison wasn't the death of these men, he had no issue killing. It was himself. How to enter a room, kill eight people and not be killed himself. 4 men maybe if he was fast, but eight was extreme. And he had no grenades or shrapnel bombs.
The other issue was the physical direction of the problem. The corridor had no vents, no secret passages, just a straight shot into the next room. In this case, into a room where eight men had heard a very loud speaker tell them that someone was going to try and kill them.
Harrison's breathing began to get heavy and quick again, as though he had been running. Eight of them? Eight of them! It would take a tactical team to clear a room with eight men in it!
"Harrison your order stands. Enter the room. Eliminate all hostiles." The loudspeakers blared at him again. Harrison couldn't hear the sound of concealed glee in the doctor's voice.
"What if I refuse?" He tried to say calmly into his mic, but his voice was anything but steady. He couldn't fail at this! Not after how hard he had tried but nothing was worth dying for! Nothing!
"There is no refusal. Enter the room and eliminate the hostiles now." The doctor said again, this time his voice terse and annoyed.
Harrison shook his head firmly. This was suicide; no way would he kill himself over some dumb job no matter how top secret it was. They would just have to accept the fact that he wasn't going to be there man, death was not worth it. Harrison turned around and began walking down the corridor back the way he came.
This time when the loudspeakers blared again, it was a voice other than the doctors. This one was gravelly and harsh.
"Lieutenant Harrison you have direct orders to enter that room and kill everyone inside. This is your final warning, do you comply?" The rough voice said darkly. Harrison laughed at the mic.
"Fuck you guys. I'm not getting killed for a stupid position. Go find another crazy person."
Those were the last words that Harrison would ever say.
For a moment Harrison made his way back the way he came going through the rooms he had already cleared out. It wasn't until he made it 1/3 of the way back that he felt it, a sharp jerk in the back of his head that caused his eyes to roll up inside his head for a moment. With the jerk came a sharp intake of breath that came involuntarily, followed by a violent spasm in his body. He stood for a moment before the jerk came back again, so strong he felt what could only be described as a great tearing, so great that he could hardly tell that he was on the floor writhing around and shuddering greatly.
Harrison began to feel something that no human had ever felt before. The jerk was brutally pulling his conscious away from his body. Inside his own head Harrison screamed out in horror as a cold sensation overtook the feeling he had lived with all his life, the connection to his body.
And yet he lived.
Harrison could almost feel nothing, except for the cold and a faint tingling in the background of his mind which was there but for a moment. After the tingling stopped, he became aware that his body was standing up and began an uncoordinated jog back to the final room of the corridor. Harrison's mind was firing controls everywhere it could to try and figure out what its body was doing. How was he moving without his consent? And all the while he screamed in horror as he finally reached that last door that separated him from death.
Harrison's hands retrieved the small submachine guns that he had strapped to his belt and held them up to his eyes to check. Both were fully loaded. And with that Harrison saw his body raise its leg and kick down the door.
Eight men were inside, all armed. Three of the men carried rifles, two carried pistols, one carried a shotgun, and three held machetes.
Harrison cried out in sheer horror as 'he' leaped into the room machine guns blazing in rapid fire. The closest two men dropped as his bullets riddled their chests with bloody holes, but the other men began to react. The shotgun fired and left a clean hole in his shoulder that was followed by the wet slap of Harrison's blood cascading to the ground. Small arms fire erupted around Harrison as he leaped forward and jammed the barrel of a machine gun into the shotgun holder's mouth. A quick blaze of fire caused the man's head to explode and spray bits of brain across the room.
Harrison felt almost nothing. Pain was distant, so distant he hardly noticed as a machete was sunk into the small of his back. His body's reactions were instant and deadly, whirling around and firing continually. First targeted were the firearm holders, then the men carrying machetes as they were the less dangerous Enemy.
The body of Lieutenant Harrison incurred several injuries. One shotgun blast to the shoulder, two small arms rounds to the chest, one large round to the right knee cap, one major laceration to the back and one stabbing to the chest piercing the left lung. But at the end of one minute twenty seven seconds, the only living thing in the room was Lieutenant Harrison's body which knelt panting and shaking a death rattle in the middle of the blood soaked room.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Interesting." General David said as Subject 06 finished his slaughter of all the hostiles in the room. A console showing the feedback of Cranial Emplacement 251 showed a green light, that the objective had been complete. All Enemies had been eliminated. Then the green light flashed off and several screens began to flash a warning message.
"INPUT DATA MISSING" The screens said as Subject 06 slumped over in his spot never to move again.
"So...As you can see the microchip worked perfectly! The subject acted just like you said, a coward who would never truly risk his life! But the Project Austin microchip changed that! I was concerned that the animals we tested it on were too weak minded, but as we just saw it works perfectly well on humans!" Dr. Jacob said quickly wiping his sweaty hands on his blazer. It had worked beyond expectations! Funding for his projects was assured!
"And it controlled, 100% of the subjects functions?" General Jones asked as he looked over some of the data.
"Errr...well no it did control 96%. Well within the expected parameters. All that was under the subject's control was some thought patterns but not enough to control his own body. Once the Project Austin microchip enacts the brain can no longer send data to the rest of the body and the body acts by signals the microchip sends it. While we send signals to the microchip through radio waves! Quite genius really!" Dr. Jacob said hurriedly feeling that the sell was right at his finger tips.
General Jones and General David glanced at each other and nodded. Two men of immense power, whose power was going to increase a hundred fold in the next twenty years if all went according to plan.
"If all goes according to plan, we project that we can have these installed on 40% of the civilian population by 2052. And 78% of the military population by 2038. Do you think you can produce enough of these microchips doctor?" General Jones asked seriously consulting his notes on the matter. Dr. Jacob nodded quickly.
"Yes...yes sir! I can with the appropriate funding!"
"Well then," General Jones said as General David left the room. "We will be sure to get you your funding." Then General Jones followed his colleague out of the room.
Dr. Jacobs knew this was a night to remember, though he had just condemned humanity to a future of enslavement it didn't bother him so much. Like all other scientists, the creators of great and deadly powers, Dr. Jacobs was concerned with his funding.
