I want you all to keep in mind that when I use the word "crazy" I'm not neccessarily referring to those men and women we all enjoy a good laugh about every now and then. You know, the ones that eat grass, have to wear helmets during the day (sometimes at night) or have illusions of stuffed animals conspiring to rape and murder the president. In fact, we all know that it's accepted now, and even encouraged to laugh, now that scientists have proven that they do not, in fact, have souls.
I'm rambling.
What I want to call to your attention is your daily life. Most of us have jobs, some a family, a few have drug addictions and fewer still have none of the above. Those of us with jobs probably work the normal daytime hours, maybe some earlier or later than the rest, but still, we grind out each day, one after the other.
Why? So we can finish the day and head home to the things we enjoy, be it food, family, booze, whores or video games. Furthermore, we look forward to each weekend, each holiday, every chance we have to do what we want, when we want to do it. We want to be successful, so we can live a stress free life towards the elder years, a life of luxary without restraint. Sure, it all seems perfectly normal, it's life, right?
I say it's crazy.
Given there are some exceptions, people that love their jobs are the only ones I can think of at the moment, but what if that life without obligation were staring us in the face our entire lives? What is to stop someone from just quitting? Is it really worth it?
I'm not speaking about the bums you throw change at on the street. (Or kick and taunt if you're like me). I'm referring to the step above. The people who don't want to be cold and hungry, but don't want to work. What if you quit your full-time job today and moved out of your house/apartment? What would happen if you took a small, cheap apartment (possibly clean, depends on what you like) and paid for it by getting a cruddy, part-time, minimum wage job? Just enough to pay for rent/utilities and food? What if?
Imagine everything you could do, take it all in. You could sit around all day, work when you have to, maybe a few hours every other day. No big deal. Your weekends are when you want them. You could sleep all day, you could beat any game you want, or your meat for that matter. Whatever you feel like doing, you could do it. Hell, you could build a fort in the woods, remember when you drew up the plans as a kid?
Sure, you'll never live the lavish lifestyle that most people would kill for. But do you really need it? I think money really only buys you time, time to do whatever you want.
So I ask again, is this crazy? this life of ours? Is the grass greener on the other side? Is any of this world we live in really worth it?

However there is one other issue at hand, mainly, the reason I won't do this.
Fear.
I'm not going to drop everything I have, everything I've worked for just to "try it out". I like my life, it's not all that bad. I'm not going to risk it all when it comes down to it. Fear. Fear of losing what we have.
-------------------------------------------
Why waste time stewing over it then?
Tsk Tsk. Weak.
It's not a matter of revamping your lifestyle. That's a short-lived, ineffective solution.
It's changing your frame of mind; for surely thought dictates action.

i think you are underestimating the amount of money it takes to
live even one step above homelessness. go find the cheapest
apartment listings if you dont believe me. then add utilities, transportation,
food, etc.
it would probably require working full time at a minimum wage job,
which would defeat the whole purpose of your plan. """

I agree with you 100%. In fact that what im doing. I'd rather sit around, play games and relax all day, rather than make lots of money but work half the day and be tired the rest of the day.

What would happen to neo-classical capitalism, the free market, and globalization if this very thought (which is very innate in many ways) could be a reality???
God damn! You hit the nail on the head. However there is one other issue at hand, mainly, the reason I won't do this.

I'm not going to drop everything I have, everything I've worked for just to "try it out". I like my life, it's not all that bad. I'm not going to risk it all when it comes down to it. Fear. Fear of losing what we have. As you said, only a clean slate could function like this. Tabula Rasa.

You're missing the point. Not too mention there's going to be obvious holes along the lines. But to appease you:
If you live in a low cost area, live near your workplace, buy in bulk/work at a food place. You're spending very little right there.

I absolutely agree with you. It's hard to conceptualize though because most people AUTOMATICALLY equate material well-being with happiness.
What you've suggested would be abosolutely possible - provided we could wipe the evolutionary slate clean.
Alas though - we are a society depended on money and material consumption.
Even if you ATTEMPTED to emplay your theory, modern society has been constructed in a way that makes it impossible, and it has been constructed this way for a reason.
What would happen to neo-classical capitalism, the free market, and globalization if this very thought (which is very innate in many ways) could be a reality???

also, many people want to raise a family, and/or attract women, both
of which tend to cost a lot more money.

It depends what kind of women you're trying to attract.

I see what you're getting at, but I don't really agree. You can't enjoy life from your couch. (which is where you'll be stuck because a) you still have a job and b) you haven't got any money to go anywhere when you're off) you've got to get out there. You could totally give up everything, and just hitch trains, and that would be cool, or you could switch to that super cheap apartment, keep that good job, and on weekends, you could fly to vegas, or new york, or take a road trip, or whatever. What I want to be able to do is ask for an extra week of (unpaid) vacation instead of a raise. I don't need more money, but I sure as hell could use some more time. We should all be teachers. Summers off!! yeah.

I have my own home, and a car that's paid off. As long as I can afford to replace all the plastic walmart pools my dog eats I'm happy.
As long as there is enough left over for a party or two.
I worry more when something is nice and new that someone will steal it or it will break then I would worry about stuff I can't afford.
But really I'm just waiting to be pulled from the Matrix.
