I am a young man, only 21 years old. Far too young to be concerned with the type of things that I am.
For at least two years now, I've been drinking. Every day. In great quantity. Before that, I subdued myself with weed, every day, for two years prior. Substances have always been escapist for me, as they are for most who abuse them as I do. It was this lust for the distortion of my reality that led me to try other drugs, and in the last six months, I experienced the effects of ecstacy, coke, mushrooms, and various painkillers each for the first time in my life.
I have moved from one enabling environment to the next, going from fraternity houses to party houses, each throwing keggers at least twice a week, and the most recent of which throwing them every single night for four months before the house was condemned and destroyed. Not necessarily in that order.
Yet I have never owned a sense of depression, through all of this. In the day time, I have always felt privileged to be going to college, to be working the job that I work, to have the family and friends that I do and to be endowed with the material possessions I have amassed in my short years on this planet.
Recently I considered that perhaps I am depressed-- not in the "woe is me, the world is against me and God has forgotten me" sense-- but rather a depression manifested through general apathy. I come into work late, do poorly in classes I find easy, and neglect simple responsibilities I have the capacity to fulfill.
I do not care for personal relationships, in the amorous sense of the word. I hold my friends and family close and loyally, do my best not to speak ill against them and to defend them in the presence of others, and extend my services to them at all opportunities. Nevertheless I rarely attend family gatherings, as it represents the one social setting I am most uncomfortable in. I have considered that this may be because in a family setting, one is more often held accountable for that which they feel most guilty for; in my case, my alcoholism and inability to achieve greatness in my own life.
Family tends to weigh and measure you.
But despite the closeness I share with my friends and family, I find myself unable to share the same closeness with the girls I meet in my life. Sexually promiscuous and at times even misogynistic, I treat my interactions with women the same as any other drug in my life, to be used at my discretion and without remorse or regret. Do not think me entirely evil based solely on this premise: I have never represented to any girl that I intend to pursue a personal relationship with her, and often fail to "close the deal" based solely on my candor.
Outspokenness has been a downfall for me more than once. Sir Isaac Newton once said, "Tact is the delicate practice of making a point without making an enemy." I've not always possessed this ability, often at the times I've needed it most.
I wonder whether part of the reason I have inebriated myself before I try to rest each night is to staunch the continuous onslaught of visions that trouble me in my dreams. I have seen myself die hundreds if not thousands of times in my dreams; I have watched others die at my hands, and I have both bore witness to and acted out things far more terrible than I would perform in real life. Perhaps this comes from a lifetime of witnessing such things in television and movies. I do not know.
Life is not a chore, it's simply what you make of it. The chore lies in actualizing your dreams, and feeling truely as if you are getting everything you really wanted out of life. Ever since I was a young child, I have made lists upon lists of things I would do with my life if only I had the time; yet I allow myself to waste time on a daily basis. This is nothing short of a lack of self discipline. While I recognize it to be so, I still find myself unable to rectify this shortcoming.
On many occasions, I've felt like I want to just smash a person's face in. Several times I've acted upon this desire when my reservations are washed away in a haze of inebriation at the bar or a party. Every now and then, certain qualities about a person will just piss me off, and a lot of those times I can't pinpoint just what it is about the person that I detest. I usually endeavor to be personable, especially at my job, where it is required of me; that doesn't stop me from watching these people suffer in the privacy of my mind.
Think of the movie, "Office Space". That movie is very much like my job. I encounter a lot of Bob Limberghs every day; a lot of people like that fat bitch who constantly says, "Sounds like someone has a case of the Mondays." Those are the type of people I am talking about. Those are the ones I would like to hose down with napalm.
When I was very young... from around age seven to when I was eleven or twelve, when nobody was around... I would pretend to be a contract killer, skulking around the house on the balls of my feet, peering around corners and hiding behind furniture. I would act whole scenes out; even ones where I did not succeed, and envisioned myself lying on the ground, dying, blood seeping out of my body as I contemplated the last things a dying man contemplates. I loved it.
As a result, I became quite adept at moving silently in a variety of environments. I practiced the craft at home, in the yard, in the woods behind my house, at school, and on camping trips. The Boy Scouts taught me how to tend to simple wounds, how to survive in the wilderness, how to fire a rifle with accuracy and how to win over people you secretly despise.
I learned in high school how to speak fluent Spanish, and now I'm working on Polish and Mandarin Chinese. I also know some basic phrases in German, French, Korean, Greek, Latin and Hebrew.
Perhaps that was the career I was always meant for: the life of a killer. But how, exactly, does one begin such a trade? Moreover, how would I live with myself? My whole life I have, ironically enough, been deeply religious. This would undoubtedly prove conflicting should I pursue such a path.
But all of this, of course, is just petty banter, none of which I'm liable to do anything with. I will never be an assassin, and I will never hose down the Bob Limberghs at my office with napalm, sadly enough.
For two years, Ubersite has been host to my confessions and musings.
This collection of indiscriminate thoughts will invariably be rejected. I share them because it is comforting to know that they are not mine alone to reflect upon anymore, and since I cannot speak of these things with the people who I know personally, this is the best way to get a weight off my chest.
Thanks, folks.

Welcome to the state of mind of every bored, drugged up teenager that ever lived........ Except your not a teenager........dude grow up! Travel, take up base jumping...anything! I can only recommend it, because it's what I did. Minus the base jumping, that shits hard core.
I think the way you write is great though, and I'm just sulking because you hit a nerve or two.

The moderate path is, by definition, between the extremes. How can you know where that path lies without knowing those extremes? How can you walk the moderate path if you do not accept the lessons of those extremes?

normally a +2, but you get auto -2 for using the word "musings"
That word is a cancerous lump upon the face of writing. And I hope some day, a doctor of literature punctures and drains that filthy abcess of cliche with a syringe of "using a word other than 'musings'-liness".
Also, metaphors are dumb.

Did you intentionally express that opinion with an exaggerated metaphor, or was that an oversight?

I think you are bored. Find a more challenging job and a nice girl (or boy).
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A) Definitely not queer. Ignore that the avatar looks like George Michael. I was trying to show off my "skills of an artist", as Strong Bad says.
B) I already mentioned, the whole "long term relationship" thing just doesn't work out for me. It's not that I'm afraid of commitment... I just feel like I have plenty of friends, guys and girls, that I can hang out with and have a good time around without having to buy them gifts or concern myself with their wellbeing 24/7. Maybe I'm just immature at this point in my life, but I much prefer semi-anonymous one night stands right now.
C) You're absolutely right, I AM getting bored of my job, my hobbies, and partying all the time. I just don't know what to do about it. I'm looking into getting a position as a bartender, but to be perfectly honest, I don't really think it's going to change the situation all that much. I feel like I need to get out and travel the world.

"First off, I don't claim to be representative of the "average Uberuser". "
That has no relevance to the question though.
"Second off, a great deal of Ubersite is international."
American uberusers then. Which make up the majority anyway.
"Lastly, in a vast mixing pot such as America, you can't expect any one of the country's many niches to even begin to represent the opinions or nature of the whole nation. Are pro athletes representative of America? Sure, but only of the particular sector to which they contribute. Is the President representative of America? Not hardly! He SPEAKS for America, as an elected official, but still holds a bias toward one side of a partisan government, and is staunchly opposed by at least half the nation. "
Thats why I asked whether the collective group of American Uberusers, which is a cross section of the American society, is representative of it as a whole.
"Don't assume anything about any person or culture until you experience it completely, and first hand."
I didnt, thats why I asked the question.

It's called growing up and it sucks major ass. If you're looking for direction in life, just pick one and go. If you sooner or later realize it's the wrong path, pick a new one; it's never too late.

...in Mandarin Chinese.
Do assassins get benefits? Even better - are they unionized?

Maybe you're a sociopath. There is a book out there called something like "the sociopath next door" that claims that there are a lot of sociopaths out there functioning fairly normally except that they are, well you know sociopaths.
just a thought
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
There's really no "maybe" about it... I felt a lot of strong emotions for a girl, once, and the aftermath of that relationship made some serious changes to how I see the world. I'm not a sociopath in the sense that I would kill someone without considering the consequences-- but that's not really a sociopath, is it? That's more of your run-of-the-mill nut job.
But no, I would probably not stay awake feeling remorseful for my actions. If anything, it would be the religious implications that would trouble me, which is admittedly motivated by selfishness.
For what it's worth, there are people in the world that I would make sacrifices for; people that I HAVE made sacrifices for. I would go to the ends of the earth to protect both my mother and my six year old sister. So perhaps I'm not a completely lost cause.

Welcome to the club.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Okay, I read yours... since you read mine. We're not EXACTLY the same, but we do write in a very similar fashion.
Some similarities:
We both hear frequencies not in the common range of audibility.
We both have eclectic reading habits.
We share a distaste for the blind conformity, lethargy and anti-intellectualist traits gaining popularity in mainstream society.
You and I both seem to write half-expecting nobody to understand, half-hoping somebody will, and entirely out of frustration for a lack of a suitable outlet or the capacity to effect immediate change in what we perceive to be the misguided apprehensions of the common man.
We both seem inable to convey these thoughts without a tinge of arrogance; to express distaste in the world you perceive around you is an inherently conceited act.
We both suffer from insomnia. Maybe "suffer" isn't the right word, though... it's never bothered me that much. I actually kind of like walking the streets at two in the morning, when everyone's gone to sleep. - http://www.ubersite.com/m/67401
Some differences:
I've never really been at all introverted, despite the awkwardness of my social graces when I was younger. I was more of a class clown at school; however, I have always held a deep appreciation for time spent in seclusion, and while I go out and party quite often, I much prefer living alone and having a few hours a day completely to myself.
You're British.
I don't know what "detritus" means.
But anyways, thanks for stopping by.

Hmm... if I may ask a question?
Are uber posters representative of the American population as a whole?
Yes, in fact Uber as a whole is indicative of every persons beliefs, morals, and opinions in the entire world. It is a microcosm of all human life. Why do you ask?

It's called growing up and it sucks major ass. If you're looking for direction in life, just pick one and go. If you sooner or later realize it's the wrong path, pick a new one; it's never too late.
Hey, in ten years, you'll be able to tell 21 year olds these same things...
...in Mandarin Chinese.
Do assassins get benefits? Even better - are they unionized?

You'll be fine, you just need to find yourself one of those socially acceptable addictions. Sex, chocolate, spicy food, exercise...
And it's Bill Lumberg ;)

Maybe you're a sociopath. There is a book out there called something like "the sociopath next door" that claims that there are a lot of sociopaths out there functioning fairly normally except that they are, well you know sociopaths.
just a thought

Wow man that's deep. You should totally quit your job and take up extreme sports.
Oh yes and perhaps stop being an aloof, rudderless, self absorbed, twat.

Drugs can be a good escape, and I don't regret my experimentation with them.
But I have found that overindulging leads to apathy for me, too.
I really enjoyed your candor here, and I hope it was cathartic for you to share.

Now I remember why you bug me so much. . . You're me. Ten years ago. Arrogant little drunken, not-working-up-to-potential bastard.
I have GOT to get myself a logo that makes me look like George Michael. Where'd you get yours.

Don't have your number, cherie. My cell phones get stolen faster than Paris Hilton's.
You could always e-mail it to me, though. It really has been too long. My drinking "skills" are in rare form lately.
