Italy gets a stupid red card in the 50th minute. Handing out cards is the new fasion. It's now 11 versus 10. Australia has 90% of the possession and an extra man on the field.
Then in the 73rd minute Italy's finest playwright, thespian and comic gets substituted into the game under the guise that he's a great player; Francesco Totti. Totti is over rated.
With a burst of speed and a deft touch in added time Fabio Grosso makes a break in the box. An Aussie slides by him, missing the ball and the flamboyant Italian.
Yet, with the skill of a God, he recognizes an opportunity and cons the Ref and an entire nation from down under.
Only rarely does one see such blatant diving in the box.
A grown man cheated his way to victory and is probably a national hero now. What does this say about Italy?

... Here's the thing. It's all very well to throw up your arms and shout "we was robbed!" but at the end of the day Australia just wasn't able to turn chances into goals. You had the same problem against Brazil; strikers made some nice efforts but only ended up battering the shit out of the crossbar and the keepers mitts.
That Italy had to resort to a sneaky goal is just testimony to the fact that both sides played like sacks of shite. Don't worry, I'm sure italy will get beat by a proper side soon.

After this World Cup there are going to be all sorts of meetings and press conferences about the bullshit that's occurring, including but not limited to: too many cards, inconsistent reffing, no real international standard of play, putting chips in the balls to ensure a goal is counted, and the standard issues of player behavior and bad calls.

I watched the second half of this game on my lunch hour. That was a pretty weak call. That being said, the announcer on ESPN was killing the Australian defender for leaving his feet. It makes the call a little easier on the ref.
That being said, they NEED to do something about diving in the sport. I don't think a penalty shot is necessarily the answer, but maybe making them wear an armband a la the captains (but a unique and reserved color) so that the habitual divers are obvious to the refs. Help them out with the players who are more likely to have just fallen rather than being fouled.

Fifa needs to institute a diving rule similiar to what the NHL has done. If a ref decides a player has blatantly dived, theres at least a couple of those a game, award the opposing team a penalty shot. Harsh yes, but I guarantee you that it would stop.

This was absolutely brutal. Australia has been a cinderella team this tournament, and to really take it to Italy and outplay them and to lose on such an utter bullshit call late like that is complete crap. I guess good teams will get those calls. I'm disapointed for Australia, I always cheer the underdogs and the fans there have really been rallying behind their team.
