What can I say...that's the sign of a man who understands what's important in life. Pretty amazing gift. My only problem with it is if their going to put it toward curing diseases, they're going to do more harm to humanity than good.
More people and fewer diseases to kill them off is the last thing we need. If you ask me, they should put it toward solving the coming energy crisis, but, hey, beggars can't be choosers.
I believe there is an underlying reason these two men have decided to dedicate the rest of their lives and fortunes to philanthropy, I'm just not sure what it is. I'm trying real hard to find the conspiracy and be cynical, but I just don't see it.
Could it be that the true spirit of 'giving' and real sense of 'community' are not dead? What's the catch? Pinch me.
I know! It's a conspiracy to keep population levels high so they can sell more oil and have more slaves and soldiers for the end times battle! That's it.
No, wait...they've realized that money is worthless anyway and are giving it away on the cusp of the dollar collapse so they can claim "well, at least we tried".
Help me out here... What am I missing?!?

Once Bradley becomes more "do" than "talk" I'll care.
But he never will, because "doing" requires balls.

Wow? You met that guy in person? I hope he he had restraints. Or medical staff with ready to hand sedative.
Seriously, just because you met him in person doesn't make him less of a bigoted nutjob with the people he argues with. Neither does it validate the pre-digested bullshit he tries to cram down people's throat about a world he has obviously little understanding of. We all tried to have normal debates with him and there is no use since he'll always lose it as some point if you don't accept his Truth.
And stop acting like he's a victim. There's no lynch mob. indoninja or me and a few others has been arguing with ETS way before he got so widely hated.

Maybe because it originated there? Maybe because of the church run programs that push for sbstinance instead of condoms? Maybe because of the beliefs in some areas that sand in the women's vagina will prevent disease?
For fags and junkies maybe because of it spreading through blood contact, which is pretty easy between needles and butt sex.
But I am probably just a blind sheep. I don't realize we have an all powerful secret govt body pulling the strings and creating designer diseases it is so powerful it cocks up in Iraq and is about to have its "dollar hegemony" crushed.

Just about everyone above 5 years old knows that this due to lack of prevention and proper education. AIDS organizations keep complaining that too much money is put in searches for medication that only westerners can afford and too few is put in prevention. The only reason it is concentrated in the gay communities and junkies (<- both often go hand in hand) is because of their unsafe practices.
In what kind of sheltered world do you live in?

HIV doesn't desintegrate entire population like napalm. It takes years before it reaches AIDS and even in Africa, it doesn't afflict 100% of the people.
There would be better ways to wipe out a population.

"More people and fewer diseases to kill them off is the last thing we need."
You're a dick. I'd like to see you get a life threatening illness that we don't have a cure for and then hear you say that. I'd bet your opinion on this matter might be a little different then huh?
-------------------
The universe is a hostile place. There are no absolutes. And good and evil really are relative. That being said, all I'm asking people to consider here is what is the lesser of two potential evils?
In the answering of this question, you have to, as a matter of course, consider certain factors like global population and how that relates to disease, food supply and how that relates to both population AND oil production, and you have to consider the pertinent and immediate issue of peak oil, because if most of the experts are correct, and peak oil has come, and from here on out it's gonna be increasingly expensive and difficult to supply the earth's demand for the commodity, then the potential problems that will arise from such a scenario will far outweigh in the immediate consideration any wish to put an end to disease on the planet.
Humans weren't created to live forever. I'm more concerned with the ones that are here to be able to live well while they're here. You cannot stamp out tragedy completely, and in the effort to combat nature, mankind will inevitably have to consider the issues of how that adversely affects that balance.
I'm not saying introduce MORE disease, as I suspect our governments of doing in the cases of AIDS, SARS, some cancer, and maybe even some strains of bird flu, but I feel we need to discover a way to secure our energy supply so we can prevent the larger human and natural disasters that will be associated with a progressing loss of available energy, namely the inability to provide essential food for 7 billion people.
I simply do not want the world to come down to a choice of who lives and who dies - a choice that will most likely be settled by war since no one will want to volunteer.
If that makes me sound like a monster, it's because you're living in a fantasy world.

The catch is that there is always more than one way to look at every situation. Curing diseases, ends suffering but increases the population on a planet probably reaching its carrying capacity is just another example.

You are perhaps the most dense person I have ever met.

I bet you spent hours and hours "researching" this and still don't understand the rudimentary science behind it that a middle school kid would get.

There are wealthy people out there who relatively sane, and realize that they have more money than they and their families will ever need. If it wasn't for people like Bill Gates, who's donated millions of dollars for AIDS research, who knows where we'd be right now? If we had to rely solely on what the government doles out, we'd be fucked.
Though not all rich people are like Mr. Burns from "The Simpsons", I've read articles that indicate that some of them do suffer from a mental disorder not unlike that of the guy who fills his house with stacks of newspapers, or the lady who has 587 cats. Some sort of collecting/retentive thing, I can't think of the name. (In more extreme cases, they live like paupers, but fill their mattresses full of cash, or bury it under the house. Not like I'd ever accuse somebody who doesn't trust banks to be crazy!)

here's a tip: not paying your taxes because you're too lazy to figure them out does not count as action, and near as i can tell that's all you've really 'done'.
as for me not making it in the 'real world', i'm pretty sure i already am. i probably make close to what you make while i'm going to school full time, so god only knows how much better off i'll be than you are when i get done. seeing as how right now i'm paying for my school, car, insurance, apartment, and all other expenses, moving out from under my 'mommy's wing' WILL probably be a major shock for me -- only because i did it about six or seven years ago.

What did I acknowledge? That we have alternatives? I think it's well documented that I believe that. I've been screaming about it on here for months. The problem is, I don't see how we're going to be able to shift completely to any one or combination of alternatives completely without oil or other fossil fuels.
----------------
you're right, we are so totally going to get caught with our pants down and not have anything running on alternative energy when we run out of oil. good thing we've got you on the case to get the ball rolling nice and early!
----------------
Here on earth we have 2 main sources of outside energy entering the system: solar radiation and gravitational motion. Every source of energy we have is either a product of one of these two forces or is not a true renewable. This includes atomic energy. Uranium is not infinite in supply. For argument's sake I acknowledge solar radiation isn't either, but I'm sure we can all agree that looking forward 6-10 billion years as opposed to 2 or even 10 decades does not serve our human concerns since we'll undoubtedly be gone long before then no matter what we do.
So tell me where the energy is going to come from that is capable of sustaining current population levels.
-----------------
thanks for the quick science lesson, but i'll stick with my guy Bill Nye, if you don't mind. and thanks for letting me know that uranium isn't in infinite supply. i was totally under the belief that it came from the asses of unicorns, and as we all know, unicorns have an infinite fecal supply.
the difference is that nuclear energy is much, much more efficient. and much, much, much cleaner. oh, and i'm pretty sure we won't be driving around in nuclear power cars (right away), so my guess is we'll use other resources in that arena. holy shit, things might begin to balance out!
----
besides government funding, you don't think the big oil companies have a an R&D department? yeah, i'd doubt they're looking for alternatives IN THEIR OWN FUCKING MARKET...
-------------------------
I know they do, which is part of my point. You've got the main competitor of alternate technologies, the oil and gas industry, doing the bulk of the research. What incentive do they have to stop polluting and bring out anything they may have discovered?
----------------------
probably for the same reason that every other company comes out with something new that's better than the product before it: competition. not only that, but to keep the flow of product moving, it really isn't in their best interest to wait until the day that all of the oil in the world is consumed to start producing alternative energy options.
i mean, i know they don't have your intuitive forsight, but give them a little bit of credit, they are running some of the largest companies in the world.
----------------------
Furthermore, I really hope you're not trying to argue that medical research is underfunded here, cause if so, you have bigger mental problems than I thought.
------------------
you're telling me that the government is shelling out billions of dollars to AIDS victims in africa? what about the amount of money they spend on education in the US? yeah, you're totally right, that shit is definitely under wraps...

Duuuuur, billions of people DO provide for themselves in dilapidated environments, and they don't have much oil and their governments do have nuclears weapons, or are at least paranuclear. Tell me what's the lesser of two evils here.
___________
Funny how there used to be humans before tractors and Pepsi, how on earth did they cope?
------------------
How many humans? 7 billion?
Did they know how to provide for themselves in a dilapidated environment? Did they put those computer skills to good use back in the caveman days?
Did they have nuclear weapons back then?
===
It took my family less than two days to put together a vedgetable garden big enough to provide for a family of 6 for the whole year and even have plenty of surplus for relatives (I'm still eating canned beets from 2002 for fuck sakes). And we did it all by hands.
Surely if we could do it in a remote region only a few hundreds of miles from the tundra anybody else can do it.

It's not that I'm inherently against curing diseases, persay. It's just that curing diseases is a small concern to me right now on the giant list of doomsday-like concerns because while it might save lives in the meantime, more people is going to mean oil runs out faster, which also means more greenhouse gasses and more people to feed.
The #1 reason oil running out poses such a problem is, our agricultural systems are currently based on oil. WE run tractors on it, we make fertilizer from it, we pump water using electricity gotten from it. The land in the breadbasket of America, which supplies a huge portion of the earth's grain, is so overfarmed that crops would fail without fertilizer.
-------------
you mean we don't have solar powered cars? we couldn't build wind powered tractors? what about cold fusion, didn't they invent that in 'The Saint' with that bitch Val Kilmer? somebody should ask him how that worked. or what about the time machine in 'Back to the Future II' -- didn't it run on something called 'Mr. Fusion'... i'm thinking the Doc was onto something there...
--------------
Tell me what's the lesser of two evils here. Plus, throw in the shining possibility that as the end of cheap oil approaches, wars for the remaining resources will likely increase between countries that are nuclear capable and I think you can begin to see why it might be a good goddamn idea to start doing something about it.
--------------
doubt it, the countries that are nuclear capable will be running on nuclear power, you fucking idiot. the countries that aren't will most likely be supplied with such power plants, as most of them contribute to the production of a lot of shit in the world.
--------------
So, ask Wardy - he seems to know - what exactly we're going to replace oil with.
Nuclear is not a true renewable. It relies on uranium, which is not easily gotten and is finite.
--------------
well i mean, a lot of things are not truly renewable, but its the amount that's used versus the output that makes nuclear power such a valuable option. i mean, i think it would be a great way of dismantaling nuclear arsenals in the event of a uranium/plutonium peak production crisis -- that is, of course, if we weren't blowing each other to bits in a fit of panicked desperation. although, i guess if we're that stupid at least Darwin can rest easy knowing he was right.
--------------
We could dam every river on earth, put up wind farms off every coast, and solar panels covering every desert, but would it be enough?
--------------
what the hell? is that a serious question? where the hell would we float our steamboats, surf on our surf boards, and wage religious wars? you idiot...
--------------
All I'm saying is, if I had $30bn to give away to champion a cause that would get me remembered for something, this is the issue I'd tackle, not trying to cure disease as if we need a LARGER population than we have already.
That would be a disastrous. Period.
--------------
yeah, i doubt buffet will be remembered for this atrocity -- how dare he better the lives of millions of people around the world and set an example for the wealthy everywhere. you're right, he'd be much better off wasting that 30 billion (not really worth their weight in gold) US dollars on things that are already well funded and well researched, like the energy 'crisis' and viable solutions.
holy shit. holy fucking shit.

A new solution is not for sustainability. It is for more growth. Humans will always want growth because they know no other way. The instant a new source of energy picks up there will be major companies getting their fingers in because they see it as an opportunity for growth. More growth. A new source WILL only lead to more growth, and then what?
No dares step back and wonders what we're growing for. Without growth we'd have time to plant seeds by hand.

From what I understand from your reasoning here, you suggest that we should not cure major diseases because it would only result in more people living, which naturally leads to overpopulation troubles; yet, you're also worried that we may run out of energy reserves, which would result in the destruction of civilisation and consequently cause many deaths.

Anyway, I switched it on and let it idle to "standby." The next ship of aliens that even comes close to us should pick up the signal.
I want to be on the next "ship off this rocker" as Tommy Lee Jones' character says in MIB.

Says YOU.
I happen to think we are long past the point where we should be taking drastic and significant changes to how we impact the world's environment.
Sure we are largely insignificant as individuals, but the collective garbage we freely spew into the air, land and sea is fucking disgraceful. We don't like to hear about it, and people like you don't like to talk about it and I am well aware that we are not even close to any sort of apocalyptic levels as of yet... but its coming.
The longer the delay, the greater the mess we will have to clean up.
The lack of "common sense" these days is annoying. How did we get so dumb?

so you'd be more 'pretty sure' there if there was thirty billion (useless, according to you) US dollars to spend on oil and energy technologies, we'd be much better off than donating it to schools and libraries in the US and curing diseases around the world?
are you really trying to convince me that that's a better option?
----------------
Absolutely. That's precisely what I'm saying.
Might I recommend a BOOK on the subject of peak oil so you won't have to badger me with stupid fucking questions all night?
----------------
why would anyone ever read a book? did they make a movie of it yet? just kidding, go ahead and lay it on me, i'll check it out next time i'm down at the library.
and no, we don't need another 30 billion (useless, non-gold backed) US dollars to go towards oil and energy technologies because we already have the technologies for the most part. if the US converted all its power plants to nuclear energy, that'd be a start. thirty billion would get used up pretty quick right there, and we haven't even gotten to transportation. HOLY SHIT WHAT THE HELL ARE WE GOING TO DO?!>!>?>!??>!@
i dunno, maybe have the government fund the production of power plants and have private donations (and govt grants) give random amounts of five million dollars to the handful of scientists that actually understand alternative energy sources right now. then, if all else fails, maybe the 200+ million people that Buffet educated and saved because of his generous donation, will have a solution.

I don't think world oil even has reached peak production, which wikipedia article did you read that iin
===
I didn't say we reached peak production, although fast rising gas prices sure indicate that we're heading there.
All I said is that there is a difference between reaching peak production and a shortage of supplies. Oil won't disappear. Production just won't reach all demand so I don't see how agriculture will stop working all of a sudden.
--------------
our oil was cheap for ten years becuase of the first gulf war, or so i hear. that being said, ets once again is becoming irrational. as we use up more and more oil, we develop technologies that not only allow us to be more effecient with what is left but also so that we have to rely on it even less. as oil prices surge, a new energy source will take its place.
