This morning she's curled up in her bed. I see that a foot poking from underneath the covers has yesterday's dirt still on the sole and think about all the time spent giggling and singing "This Little Piggy."
Her hand, that is lightly grasping a well worn blanket given at birth, reminds me of the times spent holding mine as we cross a street or walk to the park feeling the warmth of safety and it makes me smile.
I want to lean in and breathe deep the scent of being a child while the voice of a young daughter saying, "Mommy, look what I can do" also warms my heart.
As my eyes slowly wander over the contents of her room, I stop at the rollerblades propped up near her closet door and remember the first time they were put on. Shaky steps at first that gradually became strong until "Let go Mommy, I can do it by myself."
On the back of her door hangs a bathing suit and I think about all the time spent teaching her how to float and put her face underwater. Getting her to trust me enough to jump into my arms in the deep end and playfully splashing each other in the shallow. Still looking at the suit I think about how styles have changed as she has gotten older and I see her step from the fitting room and ask, "How does this one look, Mom?"
Next to her dresser are a pair of shoes that are now much too small but still occupy a special place here in her room, a room where everything now is kept by her choice. The shoes are still there because she remembers where she walked in them, the vacation she took them on and whose hands helped her tie them until she finally learned to do it herself and hears, "Good job honey, I'm so proud of you!"
It is with these thoughts, as I quietly make my way from her room, that I realize that true is the saying that memories are given so that we might have roses in December.
