I'm not sure if this is a victory or a loss. I personally as an American do not believe someone should burn the American flag, but it IS part of the freedom of speech, as said in the bill of rights. Take a look at that section below...

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

I saw last night a major argument at a bar over this subject, (personal note: do not get involved in politic or religion chat when drinking) it is amazing how many people don't grasp the actually meaning of freedom of speech and right to peacefully assemble and protest. People in America have been letting the government give it to us side ways, and as the cookie crumbles, this is who represents us, like it or not. In my personal opinion this vote on burning the flag turned out how it should.
I'm curious what you all think about this, should it be illegal to burn the American flag? Or should you under your first amendment right be able to if you wish, regardless of personal opinion.

As far as I am concerned burning the bible is an equally retarded form of protest... both serve as obvious symbols of their respective control-oriented organizations.
Effigies of people usually have the most impact (especially if they resemble current political "leaders") but in the end they are still just a futile display of petty frustration from a pathetic group of individuals reduced to gimmick pyrotechnics to make whatever point they feel needs to be made.
Of course, the REAL accomplishment as a society will come when we take the time to honestly examine >why< these people feel the need to participate in such idiotic exhibitions of uselessness in the first place.

If you read the first url link you'll see they didn't pass the change, it is legal to burn the flag as long as it doesn't break any other state or federal laws while doing so, like i said this couldn't be an issue of personal opinion, but an issue of what our constituion states.

I've gotten into it with him from time to time and he is harboring some major anger issues over the fact that I once told him that only those of us with the biological privilege / responsibility of bearing offspring should have a say in the whole abortion issue. Can't say as I really follow his logic on this one. I've shelled out a lot of money over the years to prevent myself from personally having to face the issue. I would think that not having to worry about a really complex and morally divisive would be a blessing really.

Is anyone claiming that this has anything to do with petitioning the government for a redress of grievances? I've never heard this argument with that particular spin nor that of a right to assemble peaceably. I've always heard of it as a freedom of speech issue or more accurately an issue of Congress Shall Pass No Idiotic Bullshit Laws for Political Pandering Purposes, which is after all the real issue here.

As far as ETS's conspiracy theories? I can't help but wonder if some of the more absurd conclusions that some people make are really all that far from the truth. I have not made my mind up about anything, but there are some rather fucked-up UNEXPLAINABLE things that go down on all levels of government and quite frankly I would like to see some of his assertions flushed out and intelligently explored with facts and governmental transparency.

My problem is that he losely ties those facts together and make up weird theories with them which all point toward some kind of omniscient/omnipresent government that controls every single aspect of our lives.
