The events presented in this narrative are not meant to be taken as fact. Most are hearsay or from the news, while others are fictionalized. All occurred within the last 24 hours.
*****************
4 a.m. - A petite blonde moans as she makes love to her boyfriend on the couch. He is the first man she feels comfortable with in almost 8 months. As her back arches, a primal, guttural growl escapes her lips. Suddenly, both sit up sharply as the door to the study bursts open...
4:18 a.m. - Three police cars slide smoothly into the lot, lights off. The officers slide smoothly out, dashing to the front door. Guns drawn, lights on, they enter and slide up the stairs to the third floor. The details in the 911 call were somewhat sketchy. Ex-husband, violating a protection order. Knife. Hurry.
One well-placed kick and they are through. There they see a man, bent over the still form of a woman. Both are bleeding, one is dead.
8:30 a.m. - A handsome geek exits his apartment and stops at the sight laid out before him. Camera crews from all of the local news networks are spread across the brown grass. Police mill around while the crime scene truck backs into an open parking space. Confusion registers before he realizes there is nothing he can do, say or see here, and he heads to his car, late for work.
9:15 a.m. - A supervisor at the county Job & Family Services office tries to call her quietest employee. It was supposed to be her day off but a "summer flu" was going around, so she had agreed to come in. It certainly wasn't like her to be late, at least not without calling.
Finally around ten o'clock the phone rings. The conversation is short and a normally strong woman weeps as the receiver lands on the cradle.
6:30 p.m. - The details are coming out. Our handsome geek talks to his neighbor, the daughter of the maintenance supervisor. The locks were changed last week. There were two previous domestic violence reports. Apparently he broke in through the third floor study window. She was the victim of a brutal rape in the parking lot at work in December.
It sounds harsh, the way people try to deal with the shock by joking. Sometimes it's the only thing that works. Huddled outside, watching the last of the police officers leave, the consensus is simple. That's a hell of way to end a bad year.
12:00 a.m. - A geek, sore and sweaty from a night at the gym sits down to pour his thoughts out. Had he been awake, could he have stopped it? Would he have heard? Would it have mattered? Probably not, but it is almost certain that people are double-checking their doors and windows. And one geek is awake. Someone needs to listen.

I'm going to keep cheering for the Steelers, but I'm going to cheer for the Pats since that's who the man likes. That way, maybe I can still kinda be happy at the end of the season.

"Michelle Dieterle, 27, a mother of two, was stabbed to death in an apartment in the Fox Run complex along Hunt Road around 4:30 a.m., Channel 9's Becky Freemal reported.
Her ex-husband, Ryan Dieterle, 27, who was also found in the apartment. He was suffering from stab wounds to his neck.
Ryan is charged with aggravated burglary and violating a temporary protection order. No murder charges had been filed Wednesday evening.
According to police, the victim and her boyfriend were inside the Blue Ash apartment when Ryan Dieterle showed up and told the other man to leave.
The other man then called 911.
When police arrived at the scene, Michelle Dieterle was dead and Ryan Dieterle was injured inside the apartment. It's not clear how the incident unfolded.
There were no signs of forced entry, police said.
Neighbors say the victim was a mother of two well-behaved girls, neither of whom was in the apartment at the time of the incident.
They say they had heard Michelle fighting with Ryan in the past.
According to court records, Ryan J. Dieterle has been charged with domestic violence twice in the past, once in May 2006 and another time in 1998."
