well that just ruined my christmas.
they closed mxtabs.net
god I hate it when they do that.
okay, back to what my original reason for sitting down and drunkenly striking the keys hoping this attempt at placing a coherent thought on this particular medium, suceeds.
I am busy trying to find my own style of metal to play. It's actually pretty freakin' hard. I've been playing nearly non-stop since I've gotten back; trying to settle into the idea of playing metal and trying to open up my own road in the busy highway of Hard Rock/Metal. (wtf?)
So far, I've come across a few good notions: slow openings, hard/fast verse, heavy/melodic chorus, hard/fast verse, hard/fast bridge, heavy/melodic chorus then ending with the opening while everything else is still ringing.
soloing is going to take some time. Seeing as I am the sole guitarist in the band again, I'm going to have to find a way to lead into a solo yet still keep the song moving.
I also want to delve into what could be considered "metal" ballads. I don't know what they're actually called, but I've been messing around and it seems to work for a few of the songs in my head; you know: a heavy/melodic/slow opening and the same style for the rest of the song, leading into a bluesy solo, going into a faster/heavier area and then ending the song on a down note. (wtf?)
Now I know I think I just bored every single human being out there, (probably also a few animals...maybe a monkey, possibly a rhino or even a lemur; but let's face it, most lemurs have ADHD, they lose interest quickly in most things) but I wanted to write about it.
please go on with your lives now..

Whan you write your own songs, you own style will follow, not the other way round.
----------------------------------
Sinna summed it up nicely.
One piece of advice on the 'lone guitarist' quandry: base your solos around the main riffs, and that generally helps to keep the song moving - the audience will already have a predefined idea of the chords behind those riffs, so improving on them will 'fake' the chord progression to the human ear fairly well.

When I finally figured out how to play "Fat Bottomed Girls" (Queen), it opened up a whole new range of possibilites for metal melodies for me. The dropped E (to D) string sounds sweet when played as a diad. Play it open on top of a 5th-fret D. When the strings are that loose, it's easy to get Zakk Wylde and Randy Rhodes - style harmonics out of them, too. Niiiice.
Side note: don't ever ever ever "dedicate this next song to my girlfriend" if "this next song" is Fat Bottomed Girls. Ever. Say "ex-girlfrind". Testify.

Nobody on this site knows what they're fucking talking about. Everybody is so opinionated and has all the answers, but none of them will ever be rockstars. Hell, half the people on this site listen to shitty fag metal anyway.
Do what you want. Just don't suck.

Geez you people are fucking stupid, music progression isn't somebody creating something completely new, it's evolution, they try to imitate something already there and it comes out slightly different. If it is worse than the original, they dump it. If it's better, they go with it. Most of the time it is the same as what the current standard is, but with thousands of bands writing millions of riffs and solos, eventually it evolves. You should learn as many fucking metal solos as you can, and blues solos, and anything else, don't even start writing your own music until you've got the technical skill to do it all, otherwise you are just limiting yourself. The people who bitch about musicians only learning powerchords and running with them for their careers are the same ones who then go on to complain about not just jumping right in without any technical skill.

cool.
in all reality, the one musician I hope to emulate is Zakk Wylde.
He's not just "metal" he just plays whatever sounds great to him. I mean the man sings, plays piano, and plays guitar. I think he's classicaly trained as well, which is teh shizznit.
So that's a big influence as to the style of music I'm playing. Maybe one of these days I'll get the balls to post it on here...
ha! That was funny.
Maybe I'll just settle for a camwhore.

don't worry about it when you are writing a tune. Just go with what sounds good, and let other people worry about your 'style'
