Regarding - Shuttle gets fueled up for launch

http://www.cnn.com/2006/TECH/space/07/01/shuttle.launch/index.html

It appears that NASA has finally got there shit together and is going to attempt another shuttle launch today, at or around 3:49pm ET. In my opinion, I think space exploration is a great thing. Yes, it includes many risks and can be very costly, but I believe the benefits out way the bad. When I mean there are risks, there are risks! Imagine if you will a 154 feet or so fuel tank loaded with 535,000 gallons of liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen, yes that can be a disaster waiting to happen. I'm curious what you all think, do you believe in space exploration? Do you think we shouldn't be wasting our time with it, or should we accelerate are exploration of the void known as space?

After one look at this planet any visitor from outer space would say "I want to see the manager." - William S. Burroughs (1914 - 1997)

The only thing that scares me more than space aliens is the idea that there aren't any space aliens. We can't be the best that creation has to offer. I pray we're not all there is. If so, we're in big trouble. - Ellen DeGeneres

I have a few comments regarding this issue. I wish i remember who it was, some physicist with lots of awards and whatnot, said manned space exploration is nothing but the eye-candy of astrophysics. It takes alot of money away from the actual science and doesnt achieve much. My other comment is about the actual safety of the mission. Bush is pushing deadlines to get back to the moon but not giving anywhere near the money required to do it by the date he set. NASA is basicly forced to cut corners and skip safety to keep up with Dubya's unreasonable deadlines.

Just a side note here, Where do you you think science could have been today if it got the funding the war in Iraq did?

I hope that space exploration will lead to higher intelligence amongst men. Starting with you and your bad spelling and use of There/Their.

Maybe then we can start on your correct use of sentances and learn not to make fragmented ones.

I personally think we're not technologically advanced enough to bother with it. NASA costs a fuckload of money and in the end, we'll find faster cheaper ways to explore down the track so why are we exerting ourselves at such a cost now?

The future in space exploration is not in what we find on distant planets, it's learning practical ways to get there.

Not that I don't find it completely fascinating.

I think before the end of our life times we'll have colonies on the moon and "maybe" mars.

Big fucking deal.

Don't you know the country is at WAR?

----------------

If you consider it a war, I NEVER recall a declaration of war being made by congress. Also how do you know when you the war on terror? Guess what, you don't. Save it for the political posts.

+2 for the pic alone. One of the benefits of living here is that you can see the launches from your yard.

No problem, space exploration interests me, but not to the extent that its anything I want to get personally involved in. I leave that to nuts like you and my high school physics teacher.

Space exploration will be a fundemental part of our future. Yes it is costly, but we will have to do it eventually. Sooners better than later.
Plus there are heaps of technological spin-off benefits as a result of space flight developement. I cant think of any right now, but I'm sure there's heaps.

http://www.strategypage.com/dls/articles/20030202.asp

Obviously this site doesn't really specialize in space exploration.

http://www.scifi.com/sfw/issue115/labnotes.html

Both sites show a failure rate a little higher than what I was thinking. I believe this is the incident I was referring to:

On Aug. 12, 1998, a Titan IV-A carrying a spy satellite tumbled and exploded 41 seconds after liftoff due to an onboard power failure that scrambled its guidance system. On April 9, 1999, a Titan IV-B delivered a missile warning satellite into the wrong orbit after its Boeing Inertial Upper Stage failed to complete its second scheduled rocket burn.

Initially I read about the unreliability of rockets in an article about disposing of nuclear waste, explaining that if we just shot it into the sun, we'd have a couple dozen tons of waste falling back down on us...

Interesting, thanks for the links.

There's like a 1 in 100 chance that a launch will go horribly wrong, and the thing that was launched will done asplode. I'm pretty sure this applies mainly to one-time deals--satellite launches and all--as they don't undergo the same safety checks as shuttles. Actually I think not too long ago a rocket carrying some multi-million dollar satellite blew up at launch, but I might be making it up.

Google and see if you can find a link to it and post it :)
