Coming from a position where my dad used to take our dog's litter of puppies and knock them upside the head with a rock, casting their twitching bodies into the creek, I don't think I'm in a position to comment on this much. My love for dogs and definition of what constitutes 'abuse' is altogether different, I'm sure.
The way I see it, pussyfying the poor animals in this manner IS a form of abuse. It assumes the dogs will always have a safe home and will never have to fend for themselves in a life or death situation. It's important for them to maintain their animal instincts and not be pampered too much or they will die a miserable death if they get lost or run away.

However, the paw protectors are a necessity for people living in extremely hot places, like AZ. Have you ever walked on hot pavement? Dog's pads are not that tough, so it'll still scorch the hell outta their paws.

This is true, although there's probably not too much pavement where the wild dogs are. When I worked at a vet's office, a dog came in with a split paw pad from walking on pavement. The poor dog must have had heat cramps or something, because it blew explosive diahrrea all over the examination room wall. That was fun to clean up.
What really pisses me off is when people leave their dogs in the car in the summer, with the window cracked just a few inches. Or kids, I guess.
