All real love stories start with "we should see other people." It crops up in the exposition, in the 'boy meets girl, falls in love, and all that crashes and burns' phase of the background. It's a simple, unfortunate fact of life that every relationship, successful or otherwise, is a rebound from the one that came before it. It's a bitch, but once you get used to it, it's actually something of a relief. Once you get used to it, when you hear those dreaded words, something along the lines of 'we need to spend some time apart' your fingers start to twitch with the anticipation of the next true love. You can even taste her in the final kiss goodbye.
My story starts with one hell of an ending. Victoria Leinhart was my highschool sweetheart, the holder of my virginity, the keeper of my darkest secrets, and she had the nerve to dump me right at the beginning of freshman year of college. We stood on her parents porch, talking about breaking up for about an hour; her talking about how 'we weren't going anywhere' and me talking about passion and how 'it just feels right.' I sat on her porch by myself for a while before getting in my car, going home, and shipping off to my college of choice. I didn't know it at the time, but the we in 'we should see other people' is almost always an I, and Victory (yeah, that's what I called her, bite me) had one in mind.
Me, I made it out all right, I thought. I got more action than I knew what to do with in college. (Not because I'm attractive or worthy or anything, but just because it's college) I even had a couple semi-legitimate relationships, one of which actually lasted 3 months. I was normal in every sense of the word, but I never quite shook my feelings for Victory. It wasn't an active love, just a passive thing. If I wasn't distracted by some other girl, my mind always came back to her. College graduation came and went and I was loveless. I actually didn't particularly mind, it was just different. Victory and I had planned to get married out of college, like good Christian kids.
Like I said, I thought I was alright. Unfortunately, I'm not the best judge of character. A year out of college, flipping through the newspaper, I came across a certain ad, the last thing I'd expected to have with my cup of coffee.
*******************************************************************************************
* We Are Pleased to Announce the Marriage of David Walker Lee and Victoria Rae Leinhart *
*******************************************************************************************
It all came back. The first kiss, the first date, the songs, the conversations, even the sex all came back to my head in a rush and for a second I was too dizzy to focus. That was supposed to be me, the first name in that announcement. That was supposed to be me. I sighed, reading further about wedding plans and trying desperately not to love someone I hadn't spoken two in years. I didn't quite pull it off.
Do I need to do a paragraph of transition? You know where this part of the story's going.
Did you read the title?
It was a beautiful wedding. The bridesmaids' dresses were surprisingly untacky, the groom looked much less like a douchebag than I'd been expecting, and the flowers were all in impeccable taste. Victory must have planned it herself. I heard the march come up, and I smelled the distinct smell of her father- chewing tobacco and body odor. She was gorgeous, walking down the isle with that bit of white trash that birthed her. Her hair was so red it was almost scarlet, but natural, and it worked with those piercingly glacial eyes that met everyone's eyes and flashed a smile that was close enough to perfect to be an improvement. She didn't notice me, as she did her familiar little wave to her family and friends. She smiled at me though, without meaning to, and took her spot in front of the preacher. I waited my turn.
"If anyone in the congregation on this day can provide reason for these two to not be joined in the vows of sacred matrimony, speak now or forever hold your peace."
Bastard actually started talking before he realized I'd stood up to say something. No one ever says something at a wedding, it's rude. I was the lone voice of dissent. I did alright for myself.
"I've got one. Victory can't get married to this man." There was a collective and unsurprising gasp from the congregation and a look of realization and horror from the bride.
"Sit down, Chris." She growled.
"She can't marry him because she doesn't love him. She's only getting married to him because she was supposed to be married to me after college but she doesn't love me either. Dave here just lives closer."
"You don't know what you're talking about." The groom hissed.
"Hey, Davie, it's a tough world, but you can do better than this. I know you will, because that's how it works. When it's her fault, you move on and you get the good end of the deal. That's why you can't marry her, because she ended the last one. Your relationship is a failure from her end because she's never suffered a minute in her life."
"You don't know what you're talking about."
"And you, Victory, I'm sorry I had to do this, but you know I'm right. You can't love anyone else because I still love you. There's only so much of it out there, and you can't move on until I do. It's like Karma or something."
There was a pause for one of those 'moment of truth' type things, and then Victoria turned to David, grabbed him by the shoulders, and planted the most beautifully executed kiss I've ever seen on his confused little face. Nodding to myself, I hurried out of the church before someone called me out on the load of bullshit I'd just dropped, and went on home.
It was a beautiful wedding.

Take the +2 this was deserving of, that I was unwilling to give while we were still in competition.

This is early because I'm going to a bluegrass festival in the nutsac of Virginia. My friend's band is playing.
