Now that the fireworks are over, let's finish the celebration by burning a flag. American or Iraqi or Iran--whatever. Burn one. "It's for fun", as Nacho Libre says.
I love the little children with their parents. Wide-eyed imps and fairies. Beautiful little girls. Scrappy little boys. They should enjoy it. I'm not talking about them. They have their wholes lives to realize that life is fucked up.
But for the rest of you--for the rest of you responsible, cognizant, experienced adults--for you guys, you should recognize a modicum of shame, celebrating the anniversary of the creation of a monstrous, violent, aggressive nation.

Sports is the one sacred activity of life where men and women can pretend to be noble and fierce. And that penalty bullshit just taints it all.
*Internet porn (as far as I know, this started in Southern California).
So yeah, America has done good things, sure. But most of it could have been done by anyone else: Germany, France, England, China, Japan, Egypt, etc. Actually, scratch the English, they suck balls. Anyways, my whole point, and this is MY WHOLE POINT, is that it's just not worth it.
I'll repeat: IT'S JUST NOT WORTH IT.
It's not worth mountain and moon and galaxy sized portions of human suffering and pain, just for what? Just so every Fourth of July, across the US, cities can have their streets filled with thousands of onlookers, staring at fucking fireworks, feeling good about their fat, overgrown country?
Unless we keep in mind our ideals, unless we, as an American people, can funnel our tradition of aggressive mob-action (kinda like the Colonial Patriot middle class leaders did, but more gangsta), unless we can use our power as a large, privileged group of people in the war for TRUTH, JUSTICE, and SEX, LIES, AND VIDEOTAPE, then fuck it. Just fuck it, it's not worth it.

Well, if you're going to make gross generalizations about two groups of people (in that Germans don't buy into reunification day the way Americans buy into Independence Day) to prove your point, I feel I can do the same. Independence Day is more about the spectacle of fireworks nowadays than it is about anything else. You don't get history lessons on Independence Day about what this country has done over the years. You get a day off from work which most people use as an excuse to get hammered. Its not about the country anymore. No one does much on Independence Day except barbecue and set off fireworks and I find neither of those to really embody American patriotism as much as I should. There are shells nowadays of what they were about many years ago. But in response to what you left on one of my posts, you are not organizing for betterment by any measure from what I have seen (nor have I in any way, either).
For what its worth I do appreciate your input and that you have a thoughout argument to put forth and are not simply spouting backwards hatred. As Neil Young would put it: "Keep on rockin' in the free world."

I really don't agree with you people who say I should leave the country since I have such a problem with it. I'm an activist. I HAVE DONE more than just post angry things on the internet. I have tried to change policy at my university.

Every country on this Earth has done something which has negatively affected some other group. Any celebration of any country then is a celebration of how it has offended other peoples and cultures. This is bullshit. When Germany celebrates reunification day, it's not celebrating its Nazi regime. I'm glad you have such a profound problem with the way this country has been run and continues to be run, you have your own mind. But if you have such a problem with this country I see a moral dilemma in that you continue to be a part of it's society. You're independent enough to hate the fact in celebrates it's creation and go to great detail to list grievances, but not enough to distance yourself from it except through a post on the internet? I'm assuming theres some reason you haven't left, despite having such deep problems with the country itself. Reconcile yourself to these facts or leave, to be a part of a society that has purpotrated such crimes in your eyes should cause you some measure of discomfort.

I'm not an idiot. I understand people form groups and they form culture. And with that you create certain values, standards, ways of living, that are often not integrable with you neighbor. This makes people awkward around their neighbor. Even agnsty. Then they fight over a water-well or some shit...then one group of people decide they don't wanna keep fighting over the same fucking water-wells all the time, and they sacrifice liberties and freedoms to a highly rigid, militarized leadership. This leadership then organizes the society in such a way that they rampage and kill the fuck out of all their neighbors, thereby propagating their own set of values, standards---culture.
However, I would argue that at that point the people have lost control over themselves and have spiraled into a self-destructive cycle of war, peace, then war, then conquest, then peace, then war....etc, etc. I mean, the romans had a good run of it, i guess. And their legacy is definitely a big part of our current reality. But at what price? What about the inhabitants of asia minor? Of the german wilderness. Of North Africa? I bet they didn't have too much fun loosing their culture under Roman boots. Or war sandals. Wahtever
