Rather than write a story around a famous work of art, as I did previously, I decided to show one of my own drawings. This was done for an illustration class in college around '99. It was my first attempt at a detailed ink drawing, after having learned a harsh lesson: pencil first, ink later. A little background:
The drawing is of a small part of the oldest continually operating cemetery in the city of Toronto, St James. A friend of mine was buried there in 1996. After a few visits to his gravesite, I took notice of how beautiful the cemetery was and decided to walk around. The tombstones ranged from simple ground markers to gigantic monuments. There were elaborate mausoleums, some monstrous above ground "houses", some built into hillsides (as in the drawing below), and some completely underground marked by monuments. The sculptures that adorn some of the graves are very old-world. They are a bit weather-worn and some have fallen victim to vandals. All of this adds to the character of this 162 year old cemetery.
I did a photography project on St James in my freshman year and then returned years later to do this drawing. The medium is India ink on heavy stock with a brown watercolour wash. I apologize for the glare on the top portion, I didn't feel like taking it out of its frame, it was a pain in the ass to get in there to begin with. I'm hoping the picture isn't gigantic when it's posted, if it is...well...sorry? Enjoy.

I'm not gonna say that I brought you back from the dead. But it was my voice telling you to stay away from the light.

Sorry Icarus, I went on hiatus. I missed your redneck stories. Good eye, it is one of those scratchy ink pens. Refilling the little cartridge was an adventure, I was like a bear cub with a box of nails. Permanent ink everywhere...thanks for the comments guys!

i suck with a pen most of the time. at least on scenery so here's a +2 for reminding me of lithographs in old fables.

And just where the hell have you been?
Nice picture. You make it with one of those special scratchy ink pens?

The style is sort of washed-out looking, and it lends a good feel to your subject matter.
*Note: the above sentence was not bullshit as you may be thinking, but a real analysis of the artwork shown.

Psssh, this is fucking child's play. Ok, I can't do it and I semi-admire your talent. I'm pretty good at stroking my cock though.
